Overview

The Egnater Renegade 212 Tube Guitar Combo Amp is a 2-channel powerhouse at 65W. Two 12" speakers give you the tools to forge your sound and the power to move some serious air whatever the size of your venue. The Renegade amp's Channel 1 produces lush, 3-dimensional clean tones with just a bit of grunt when you dig in. Channel 2 starts with a sweet, bluesy overdrive, but pushing the gain opens the floodgates, unleashing enough thick, harmonically rich distortion to satisfy the most demanding player. Both channels offer an independent 3-band EQ, Egnater's BRIGHT and TIGHT switches and a Wattage Selector switch that lets you choose between an intimate 10W or a wall-shaking 65W. Master Presence and Density knobs let you sculpt the high and low-end response.

At the heart of this Egnater tone machine, you'll find 5 12AX7 preamp tubes and a power section fueled by 2 6L6s and 2 EL34 valves. The Renegade Head features the ground-breaking TUBE MIX function on each channel, allowing you to blend the deep Californian character of the 6L6s with the aggressive British midrange punch of the EL34 tubes. There are independent reverb controls for each channel, dual footswitchable master volumes and a speaker-emulated line out. The included 4-button footswitch controls much more than just channel switching. Use the footswitch to engage the on-board reverb, effects loop and secondary master volume with channel-assigning switches for all 3. Run them on both channels or just the 1 you choose.

The Egnater Renegade 212 Combo Amp is loaded with 12" Celestion Vintage-30 and a 12" Egnater Elite-80 Speaker by Celestion. This heavy-duty cabinet features rugged birch construction and has side handles and detachable casters. Egnater ncludes a heavy-duty cover with the Renegade 212 Tube Guitar Amp.

I originally bought the Egnater Rebel20. It had a defect with the tight switch so I brought it back for the Renegade. I didn't notice that the Renegade had a different power tube section then the Rebel until I got it home. I really wanted EL84 tubes in my amp but after giving the Renegade a whirl, I completely fell in love. The EL34 & 6L6 tube sections sound unbelievable. This amp provides everything from Marshall/Fender to Vox tone. I almost traded it back in for a Rebel 30 combo but I decided to keep the Renegade because of its extra features like "Presence" & "Density". After playing with these extra features you just don't want to give them up. The only feature I wish it had is the "wattage" dial, although the Renegade does have a 18/65watt switch. It also has extra mid EQ in channel 1 that the Rebel 30 doesn't have. All in all this is a fantastic amp!

Bought an Egnater Renegade 2x12 combo amp used from GC in Rancho Cucamonga CA... Great price, but I should have done more research. Hindsight is always 20/20... I played this amp so much at another GC and it definitely sounds GREAT! But remember what your mother told you. If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is. After I bought it (in GREAT as new condition),I brought it home, plugged right in and I noticed static crackling. But I played on after unplugging everything in my house! lol... Sounded great at the store and at home. Next day, I play for about an hour shut her off and came back a half hour later and WOULD NOT POWER ON! Tubes would light up but fan and LED power would not work..I mean, WTH? Not even 24 hours of ownership. So I did some research and found the problem to be quite prevalent with the renegade! Sure thank God GC has a great 30 day deal. But I called Egnater and even they said they knew about the problem...Made in China? Should have been my first concern. I am a gigging musician who plays all the time! Busy! Don't have time for turn around shipping IF TE PARTS ARE IN STOCK! Should have offered my a loaner until I got mine back would have been happy with that! BUT NO! STAY AWAY FROM THIS AMP, unless you have time and money! Or can afford to tote around a back up rig...I mean I am sure they have great customer service, and well they should, their amp need repair all the time from what I have read. My bad for not doing so BEFORE I bought... For me RELIABILITY is a must, and this ain't reliable at all..

Sleeper!

By Edmond Henderson

from Alton,IL

OK, I've been working this amp (with single and hum bucker pickups, passive and active electronics) a little over a month (past the point of return) now, trying to find a legitimate reason to return it (based on the few scary reviews and my own scare when l received it) and couldn't. I bought the amp over the phone and received a discount, which I applied to the "Extended Warranty". When I was taking the amp out of it's box one of the handle covers (the part that hides the screws) popped off, I'm thinking, "here we go, not out of the box yet and problems", I get it out of the box and one of the rubber feet are missing, and other three look like the amp had been standing in a quarter inches of dust. Ten years ago this amp would have gone back, but I went to my local "Guitar Center" and they made things right without having to do an "Exchange" (which is store policy). In describing this amp I would highly encourage you visit the "Egnater" site and read all the literature, especially the extra content, it is spot on. The only (all tube) amps that I was considering when look for a gigging amp with similar features and wattage, cost twice as much, and this amp is at least on par with them. This is no "one trick pony", the venues my band plays require every style music you can imagine and this baby delivers without a sweat. I own an original "65" princton & super reverb, a marshall 2/12 combo, a line 6 2/12 combo to name few, and this is the most organic amp I own. I not only got a new amp but discovered new tones in my existing guitars. If you're looking for a amp that mask your tone (sounds good no matter what you plug in it) this is not the amp for you, but neither is any true boutique style amp. This amp behaves more like "near field" speakers, what you put in is what you get out, and it's very pedal friendly (not so for any of the modeling amps I own). In this power range, if you don't plan on playing this amp at real world (gig) volume, you my never discover what this amp is capable of, I'm mainly referring to the "Mix" knob, all other knobs are very responsive at any volume. Since I believe nothing on planet Earth is perfect here is what, at least for me would make this amp so, fx "send & return" option built into the foot pedal and removable cable (foot switch), tweak able reverb, and these are not complaints, only wishes that will become reality when the warranty expire. The foot pedal (pedal board friendly) alone puts it in class by itself. In a nut shell, to say any amp is best sounding is purely subjective, so I will simply say if you're looking for an all amp that can handle just about anything you throw at it with the features, power range, sound quality, and construction (minus factory quality check i.e...missing foot), you'll be hard pressed to find it. Thank You Bruce and Team! For being "RENEGADES"

One Year Later - Outstanding Customer Service

By Acelo Pedroso

from Tallahassee Florida

I wrote a review here one year ago with a little concern over quality issues and here is a post honeymoon review. My Renegage 2x12 blew the tranny in May of this year, one year after purchase, and this issue has been discussed on the boards (suspect trannys) but I ended up with a wonderful experience and a better amp. Long story short is that Bruce Egnater personally responded to my issue, hooked me up with an exellent authorized repair center and they replaced the blown tranny, and my noisy fan, with a much quieter one. Took the opportunty to ask the Tech about a little more gain for the cleam channel and he recommended some high gain Ruby/JJ's in the pre-amp section. Have no idea what the new tranny specs are, but the amp sounds twice as good as it did before. Playing again in a popular local band using an old Marshall Blues Breaker pedal for more drive/leads in the clean channel and a Zeke Overdrive for leads in the gain channel. Beautiful cleans and Stevie Ray type tones in channel one and rich creamy distortion in channel 2 without the Zeke and with beautiful sustain and harmonic feedback (even at lower volumes) with the Zeke engaged. I get nothing but compliments on the tones and players coming up to see what amp I am using. If you have a limited budget (cannot afford a similar hand wired amp) and need some great cleans and gains from one amp, please try one of these. Also, spend the extra money and forget the single speaker combo; you cannot get the 3-D clean tones with one speaker. Go with this one or the head with matching 2x12 cab/

Tone! Tone!! Tone!!!

By Charlie Atchley

from Chicago, IL

This amp is hands down one of the best slightly cheaper amps out there. Unless you plan to buy a $3000 amp this is the amp for you. This amp can dial in just about any amp tone you seek from Marshall to Fender to Vox, but the greatest part of this is that it's (drumroll!)... ALL TUBE! Most amps with the variety of tone you get from this are Solid State Amps such as Line 6 Spider Amps. I'm not even going to begin naming what this can handle because this amp can handle just about any tone you could want, I will say though that this amp can get heavy but is not the amp for a person who wants intense Death Metal tones. The only limitation on this amp seems to be that there are only 2 channels. If this amp had 2 more channels I would put this amp on the same level as a Mesa-Boogie. This amp has insane amounts of tone and versatility plus is loud enough to handle rather good sized shows.

Egghead to buy an Egnater

Great Amp But Play a Few if You Can Before You Buy

By Acelo Pedroso

from Tallahassee, Florida

I just purchased a Renegade 2x12 three weeks ago after test driving them in different stores in Florida and Atlanta (against other amps in the same price range between $ 1,000.00 to $ 1,500.00) since last November. I am very impressed with this particular amp. I have read reviews for a year with regard to quality control issues on some (noisy tubes/tecnical issues) and I was afraid to go through the hassle of returns, etc, if I got a bum amp out of the box (I do not buy online and musk likewise bond and play a Strat before I buy). I can tell you that I played five of these in stores (with one "cracking" on the floor of one store and a Renegage "head" that just stopped working while I was playing it) before this particular one shipped in to my local store I suppose in time for the Battle of the Blues which features Egnater amps; it had been on the floor for only 5 days and I purchased it (and took it out of the competition) after putting it through the paces for a good hour. The five amps that I played actually sounded a little different to my very good ear but this particular one has the mojo; I can actually hear the difference between the 6L6 side and EL34 side even at low volume and even minor adjustments with the tone controls/feature switches make a huge difference (to find your own tone). Having owed or being in bands over the years with access to all types of Fender-Marshall-Randall amplifiers, I can say that this amp is a great value for the money and well worth it if you find a good one with no issues. The clean channel is fantastic and you can go without an over-drive pedal if you find your tone and like to keep it simple (and boosted from the master 2 volume). It's not meant (or designed) to sound exactly like a Fender Twin or a Marshall 50 watt; it sounds a little different but is a lot more vesatile in my opinion with the targeted voicing for each channel and options I won't repeat. With the semi-open back, this 2x12 format is one of the most 3D cleans I have heard from any amp and it beat out several Fender models in the same price range, and even a bit higher, I played agianst it. I only give it a 4 because of the problems I have read about online and two amps with problems I encountered in stores.........I think that Egnater is probably the next classic American amp series of the future and you can always go with the American models (the Modular Series, etc.) if you have the cash. If you find a good one, you are probably actually getting about $ 2,500.00 worth of amplifier for a much more reasonable price based on my personal experience.

KILLER AMP

By DONALD ALBERS

from SF,CA

Its hard to describe this amp - other than the sound that comes out of this combo is over the top! I'm always looking for that robust output filled with overtones and this is the most sensitive, expressive amp I've ever played through. It loves all guitars - but, I love this amp with a strat - its a deadly match. There's no downside on this amp - for the price. Its very sensitive to pick attack and the mixed Celestion's are the perfect balance. I've never seen a bad review of this amp - and I can see why after playing one. If there's a downside - its HEAVY - its built like a tank.

The Real Deal Egnaterfield!

By EW

from Charlotte, NC

Alright, I've recently come to terms with the fact that I'm a closet gear junkie. In fact, I would say I spend about as much time researching new products as I do playing my freaking guitar. My wife can attest to that. I've watched every Youtube video, read every review I could find in Internet space, and have personally scrutinized each and every option available. I'm also fortunate to live within short driving distance of several music stores, and I personally prefer GC above all because I've only had good experiences there, and well, they rock! Personal history aside, one thing you have to remember is that no amount of reviews are going to change your personal bias or affinity for a particular brand. People want what they want at the end of the day. Fortunately for me, I have no bias. I've looked at Mesa, Vox, Marshall, Orange, and a number of boutique tube amplifiers. This was going to be my first tube amp purchase, and I didn't want any regrets, nor did I want to spend a small fortune. I can honestly say that in this price range and then some no other 2x12 tube amplifier has impressed me like the Renegade. It looks top notch, the feature set is top notch, and well the sound is yes top notch. Pristine cleans, buttery distortion, and enough tweakable options to give you a vast array of tones. Everything is really well laid out. The tube mix knob takes you from American glam to British bam, and the effects loop works perfectly. I run a Supa-Trem, EHX DMB, and a CAE MXR Wah through it and I've got zero complaints...no need for an overdrive pedal at this point. The speaker blend sounds great, and the four button footswitch is a true asset. The ability to select reverb (which actually sounds surprisingly good), kill the effects loop, and boost with a main 2 is fantastic. The casters and cover are a really nice touch too. My back thanks you Bruce. I've owned mine for roughly three months now, and I relish it each and every opportunity I get. To summarize, I haven't found a better amplifier, with a more thorough feature set, and killer tones in this price range, anywhere. Thank you Bruce for designing a fantastic amp, and thank you GC for making me, yet again, another satisfied customer. Cheers!

WOW!!!!

By David

from Winter Park, Fl

I could not be more pleased with an amp. I have had this amp for 3 weeks now. This amp just feels nice. Everything I play sounds the way I hear it in my head. I love the flexibility of each channel and I've never played an amp that is so responsive to my guitar's controls. The density / presence controls are an effective create the same tone at different volume levels and the main volume 2 is a cool volume boost idea. If you can handle the added weight of the 2x12, get it. The added fullness of the 2nd speaker will bring a smile to your face and a rise in your gym shorts!

Incredible deep tone

By Bill

from Seattle, WA

I have always played through Fender amps (over 30 years) because I love the tube design. When I heard this Egnater amp being played at a local store during the blues competition, I was amazed at the tone. I had never heard of Egnater before, but I took the leap and purchased this amp. I was not dissapointed. I have many amplifiers, but this is now my favorite. The sound is absolutely incredible. It has 2 channels (one for a cleaner sound, one with a higher gain). Each channel can be modified to support either 18w or 65w, and the dual adjustable tube design is awesome. I wish they had amps like this when I first started playing as a kid.
