I started with an Echo Layla24, tried a PreSonus but I could never get the drivers to install or work. I exchanged it for a MOTU 828 Mk3. The MOTU was OK, but MOTU is not too big on Windows support and I thought the CueMix software was a bit too cumbersome. The unit developed a weird interaction between the trim adjust on channel 5 and 6 so, off it went.
I looked at reviews for several different interfaces including MOTU, M-Audio, Saffire, Mackie, and others. Having had the Layla24 I was familiar with the software interface and I had good experiences with Echo support. They also have some solid Windows drivers.
Out of the box, it installed without any problems. The firmware updated automatically and the mixer interface was easy to use. The "universal" inputs are great. They have lots of headroom and are very quiet. The Pre8 handled several different audio sources including keyboards, effects boxes and two modular synthesizers, with a mix of balanced/unbalanced, low and high line levels. The ASIO drivers are very low latency, they installed easily, and work great with Sonar.
In all, I highly recommend this interface. Echo has a solid high quality unit here which competes well and I think beats the others without question. I'll probably end up with another one in the near future.
