First thing first, I did not buy this guitar, I won it. So I'm really un-biased with this review. My main guitar is a PRS McCarty Rosewood, so I believe I have a fair idea of what a good guitar is. I was not expecting much when I got this in the mail. I was dead wrong. LTD somehow manages to pump out this guitar for 300 when it could easily pass for 6-800 dollar guitars. The fit and finish is FLAWLESS. Everything was very tight and clean, and the maple top looks fantastic. The pickups are somewhat bland, but they're great for the price of the guitar. Every bit as good as Duncan Designed and such. The guitar feels very nice, solid, and quality in your hands. I'm not used to flat fretboards, and not a fan of reverse headstocks, so this had to take some getting used to, but man, with the quality of this guitar it makes me seriously consider buying more ESP's from now on. Seriously, it doesn't matter what player grade you are, this is a good guitar that would make an excellent first, second, third guitar. It's that good. I don't know how they do it for these prices. Negatives? I don't care much for the reverse pointy headstock, and the tone knob on mine is way too stiff and slow.
Recently purchased a used model of this guitar. Actually play bass and wanted something like this around the house for writing purposes. Drawn to this model for the maple fretboard and reverse headstock. Fixed a few issues, being used, and have been playing this daily since purchased. Solid axe and would pay full price for a new one if I had to do it all over again! And, yes, it has a Floyd Rose. Despised restringing until the B snapped at the bridge but was reusable. Can't say that for a ball end.
When I was looking for a new guitar to buy,I thought about versatility, tone options and sharp looks. My main guitar at the time was a Gibson Les Paul. A consideration I thought about was less back and shoulder weight but more frets to shred on. I bought the ESP LTD M-103FM because its 24 fret maple neck, floyd rose style bridge,see-thru black strat style body,h-s-s pickup configuration, and it only costed $299.00 dollars at the time of purchase. One good feature about this guitar is the 25.5" scale lenth neck. I play a lot of lower tunnings in A,B and C# with 58 or 60 gauge strings and it stays in tune very well while holding the sustain long and tight. My only recommendation upgrade is the licensed floyd rose bridge. Investing in a better bridge with a brass block will increase the sustain. The pickups are good to start off with. As your tone needs develop you should research replacing the pickups. Overall I give this guitar a 4 stars because of its tone options, thin maple neck, sustain, good looks and price tag compared to other guitars in this price range.
Played my first gig with my ESP. Excellent guitar for the price. The Floyd Rose stayed in tune very well the whole nite even with the country bends. The rhythm sound from the neck and middle pick ups is not as good as my 1981 Strat but the humbucker at the bridge is great for the heavy rock stuff. I recommend this guitar highly especially for the price. Also it came to me set up very well. Good action and and again the floyd rose is set up very well.
I think this guitar is really awesome. It is really great for playing 80's rock. If you are looking for a guitar that has a great sound for rock and isn't too expensive, this guitar is for you. I love it.
