Picked up this bass on Guitar Center in 2010 as a factory return. I've played guitar from several years, but this was my first bass. Bought it to play along with my son when he did guitar. The bass is very easy to play. The action is fast, low and spot on. The sound tend to favor the mid range a little, but the active EQ helps dial it down when not needed. I've tried other basses (Ibanez, Epiphone, Fender, Schecter)in this price range, and they really don't compare. My friend has played a Modulus Quantum 5 for several years, and he actually liked the action on this D-5 better when he played it. Made him consider getting this bass to give his hands a break. It says a lot about how ESP sets up their basses. It's really all you need for a good solid everyday bass, and for the price its a steal. ESP basses are hard to find in store, but they're really a well kept secret. If you get a chance, try it, and you'll be suprised.
I've owned this bass for a couple of months now and have played it for many hours for practise and for performance. Having played guitar for 30-odd years, the opportunity arose to play bass with a band. Not knowing if I would even like to play bass, I aimed for a quality lower-end instrument. Given the musical genre, I needed a 5-string, so I opted for the D-5 with the thought of trading up if necessary. Note: It's not necessary. PROS: The construction is solid, and the bass came set up straight out of the box. I expected to have to swap out pickups, but the ESP factory installed are fine. No issues. It stays in tune perfectly (unlike my Les Paul). Control over active pickups provides for a wide range of tones. CONS: I had to purchase a hardshell case separately. This bass is VERY heavy. I have gotten used to it, but if heavy instruments are not for you, you might want to look elsewhere. FIN: I am not sure you can find a better bass at this price point. Since I have never become accustomed to a 4-string bass, I don't know if someone might find the neck too wide (as when I bought a 7-string guitar a while back), but I find it to be comfortable to playۡand I spend a lot of time on the 5th string.
I purchased the D-4 a few months back and I really like it so when I decided that I wanted to step up to a 5 string it wasn't even a question as to what to buy. I was very suprised when it arrived. It was set up almost perfect right out of the box. I should note tha the colors do vary on these, my D-4 has a dark redish tint and the D-5 is brown. This thing sounds amazing , and it plays very well. You can't get real aggresssive with the low B string or is will buzz, but it only took a few minuets to adjust to. I have the action set a little lower than the factory setup. I would definetley recommend this to anyone looking for an awesome neck through 5 string at a great price. I have not played a bass under a grand that I would trade this in for. I am now considering picking up the D-6 as well. ESP rules!
I bought this guitar around December of last year and since i have had it i have nothing bad to say. The active electronics are really good for dialing in the perfect sound ,whether it be slap, or ,funk or jazz, anything and this bass will give it to you. But remember you get what you pay for. It Has a straight through neck so if it warps You get to buy a new bass or stick with what you got. pickups are good for stock. above all these product exceeded my expectations and i am thoroughly enjoying it.
