Overview

If you love the sharp contrast in color you get when you put different woods together, you'll love the design of this guitar. As with it's 4-string sibling, the 5-string B-5E has extremely beveled edges which allow you to really enjoy the distinct shades of light and dark that where the mahogany body and ebony top meet. Adding to this differentiation of color is the even lighter 5-piece neck-thru-body maple/mahogany neck and ebony fingerboard. The quality of the craftsmanship makes it almost look as if this is how the woods naturally came off the tree.

But looks aren't everything your getting. Ensuring you get the most of the tones these blends of woods provide are ESP SB-5 pickups (bridge & neck) with an ESP ABQ-3 3-band active EQ. It is also worth noting that the body is short scale, at 34", with an extra thin "U" neck contour, making it easier to play for the average person. Other features include a 42mm standard nut, 24 XJ frets, ESP tuners, an ESP BB-604 bridge with string-thru-body, and black nickel hardware.

What a great piece of equipment. Sounds and feels great. A little fret buzz but a couple of turns on the bridge adjustment screws and we're set. Still trying to get used to the 5th string.

Comments about ESP LTD B-5E 5-String Bass Guitar:

I've owned this bass for about three years now, so I figured it's about time for me to give my thoughts on it. First off, owning it for three years should speak volumes for it. I'm one of those players who is constantly trading out instruments, but this bass has stayed with me longer than most and I don't see it leaving any time soon. I've had it in the studio and on the road, in jam sessions and teaching settings. Theres no place this bass doesn't fit in. My style of playing differs from extreme metal to fusion jazz. I switch between slapping, tapping, and playing with a pick. The on board eq allows me to dial in the exact tone I need for any scenario. And the neck on this beast is unreal! I'm not a big guy, so when buying bass guitars it's important for me to make sure they will 'fit' me comfortably. I can play for hours on this bass and never feel drained in any aspect. This is my go to guitar for more reasons than I can write. After three years with it, I'm still motivated every time I play it. The only thing I would reccomend is possibly switching out the pick ups at some point. But, the stock set ket me happy for the first two years I owned it.

      Awful sounding

      By Marshal

      from Alexandria, VA

Comments about ESP LTD B-5E 5-String Bass Guitar:

Okay I received this bass in the mail the other day and it looked phenomenal. Nicest looking bass I've ever seen in this price range. I was so excited. Then I plugged it in. These pickups are terrible. I've been paying for over 20 yrs, so I know when an instrument has problems. The pickups were completely unbalanced. No low end at all, even with the active preamp and the bass crank to full. They were also very low output. I would say less than HALF the volume of my other basses that cost much less. Okay moving on past the pickups. I carefully listened to the bass acoustically and determined that the bass itself it not designed properly to let the sound resonate. I don't know what it is, but there were dead spots all over. Next problem, this bass has very tight string spacing. If you like that, then you might be okay with it. I thought it would be fine. But I had trouble tapping fast arpeggios and getting a good full and clear sound with the strings so close together. Next thing I noticed is that the G string slipped off the fretboard several times when I was bending or just doing vibrato. NOPE! That's not happenin. At this point I had already decided it was going back, and then the real kicker! I looked closely at the headstock and there was a huge chip in it! In fact the whole edge of the headstock on the tip was chipped right off. Goodness was the packing that poorly done? I will never buy an ESP again! Sorry guys, epic fail on this one. Looks pretty, but that's it. If you are looking for something similar you might check out Peavey Grind or Washburn T25, or Ibanez SR500.

      What a great instrument!

      By Nicholas Puryear

Comments about ESP LTD B-5E 5-String Bass Guitar:

I've played guitar for over 40 years and owned more instruments than I can recall. My "heyday," so to speak, was the fusion era of the mid 1970s (much modal noodling, way too fast to make sense). I recently decided to take up the bass in a serious way, first acquiring a Warwick Corvette Basic Rockbasswith passive electronics. Gotta say, I love-love-love my Warwick, but as a newcomer to the bass world, I was curious about the differences between a bass with a bolt-on neck and J-bass-style single coils vs a neck-through built, through-body strung bass with active EQ and humbuckers. The LTD B4E seemed to offer a lot for the money, and it had good reviews, so I ordered one from GC, figuring it was worth the shipping cost to audition it, even if I decided not to keep it. First impression: this is by far the best "feeling" bass I've ever owned--the balance, the neck carve, everything. I've owned an MIM Fender Jazz, a lower-end Ibanez SR, and currently have the Warwick. I would not part with my Corvette, but the B4E is a different sort of animal altogether. I want to say 'elegant', if that makes any sense. The on-board tone controls offer a lot of versatility, although I tend to run them flat, through a TC Electronic 250 x 15. The workmanship/craftsmanship on my B4E is just plain flawless. I cannot find a thing to complain about. The only downside in this transaction was the strings. The B4E shipped with Cleartone strings, and the E was d.e.a.d. DEAD. I've never heard so dead a string on any instrument. However, I put a set of Rotosound Nexus on it; problem solved. (Also... I emailed GC to tell them about the dead E and having to restring, and they comped me a new set of Rotosound Nexus, which I did not expect and greatly appreciate.) I want to try out the B5E 5-string version of this bass. If it's as good as the B4E, I'll probably get one. In summary, I have nothing but praise for the B4E, but ESP LTD should maybe ditch Cleartone as their OEM string vendor.

      Couldn't ask for more.

Comments about ESP LTD B-5E 5-String Bass Guitar:

This bass is fantastic. It is made with a beautiful blend of woods that are both aesthetically and aurally pleasing.the stock pickups are great and the 3-band active EQ gives you a huge variety of tones without ever having to touch your amp. The strings it comes with aren't anything to write home about, but they can be replaced easily. It's the perfect size, the perfect weight, and perfect feel. The price is killer for what you're getting. I did a lot of research before settling on this one. I love everything about this bass.

      Best Basses are ESP

      By Pato

Comments about ESP LTD B-5E 5-String Bass Guitar:

I honestly don't know why this bass sounds so amazing at the price. I just got mine and it's stunning!!! I played all the good & expensive basses in the store one day. Then I played this bass. And I was expecting to pay about 1500+ for it. When i read the price I started looking for sings of previous use. But that's the price! Anyone who is good enough for a good bass should buy this bass. NOT FOR BEGINNERS. This is for guys that can really take advantage of its tonal range.... It probably is one of the nicer looking basses but it's real beauty is in the sound....!!!

I been playing gigs with this bass for 4 years and had few minor problems. I'm making a custom version of this bass for my bands tour and plan on using it extensively in the future!

      Very attractive bass

      By PJ

      from Auburn Hills, MI

Comments about ESP LTD B-5E 5-String Bass Guitar:

The first thing that attracted me to this bass was the neck through and the looks. It certainly is attractive. The neck is a little wider than I would have preferred for a 5 string, I like the closer string spacing. But it still wasn't terribly far, about average I would say. It did have a pretty good sound, very customizable sound. Mine had a couple flaws, 1 was a chip in the finish, and another was the truss rod seemed to be stripped. The action was slightly high for me from factory, with a little tweaking it all came together into a pretty nice 5 string neck-thru bass. Certainly one to try out for the money, but do try it first if possible.
