I see myself as a guitarist more than a bassist, though I play and enjoy them both. That being said, this is a wonderful little bass for a guitarist to play, for those days when you feel less like shredding a solo and more like grooving a bassline. This instrument is a capable, simple, inexpensive bass for a guitarist to play comfortably, with a lightweight, compact body, just one pickup, a volume and tone control, and 24 easily accessible frets. Quality obviously isn't as great as a more expensive instrument, but for the price, this bass plays very well, to the point that if I were a better bassist, I might swap the pickup out of this instrument and use it as my primary bass playing in a band. I've owned both the four- and five-string version of this instrument. They both play very well, with the four-string being just a bit lighter than the five, but I personally prefer the five-string, because the low B string allows me to play drop-tuned metal basslines without having to de-tune a four-string instrument. I'd recommend this bass to any guitarist looking for a cheap bass to mess around on, or as a first instrument to a young bassist looking to play heavier genres of music that the 5th string would be useful to have in.
I needed an affordable, small scale 5 string for the home studio. Being a guitar player, I like that scale size. Went in looking to test other basses and then saw and tried the ESP. Great feel and balance. Recorded with it that night and it's very warm and responsive. I just love it. I had a coupon so it only cost me $154! Sweet!
Just a fore-warning I only spent about 30 minutes with bass in store, nonetheless: It is definitely a fun and little bass. It was surprisingly responsive on the low b, not floppy as I had expected. It is a little awkward looking and not the best quality, but it is decent in general and respectable for the price. I'm not sure I would have the courage to make this a gigging bass because it quite frankly makes me feel like a cartoon giant. But this bass does sound very alright. It's straight forward and sounds fine (through an ampeg SVT and a 4x10) very mellow. I'd recommend this as a good learning bass for a younger one, (4 string model would be my choice) or as something else to mess around with. It's more serious than it looks, but not everyone's MAIN bass.
