This is one guitar that doesn't play by the rules. Bolt-on maple neck, basswood body, master volume/tone controls, Indian rosewood fretboard...this thing has all the features I generally hate. After begrudgingly picking it up at my girlfriend's behest, though, it replaced my longstanding favorite, the Gibson Explorer. The neck is fast and comfortable, the fretboard ridiculously smooth and hard, the tone bright and hot with the bridge pickup, warm at the neck, and almost acoustic-sounding with both engaged, the body is comfortable for sitting, standing, and lying down on a bed of nails (I imagine), it sings with sustain above and beyond anything I've yet owned, and the neck joint is so beautifully low-profile that it provides even more fret access than numerous set-necks I've tried. The overdrive tone is excellent, as is to be expected from a guitar like this, but the clean tone has a haunting quality, with a sound close to a solid-top classical with just a touch more chime. Frankly, the AX-50 is well worth twice the list price, if not more.
ESP puts the same love into their 'budget' line as their more expensive guitars. I actually perfer the satin finish; easier to keep nice and clean. Not too thrilled with the strings it came with, but those are easily replaced. The pickups are also nice, but I'm going to swap 'em for actives. Haven't seen the silver version (of course I went with the black). Excellent beginner/intermediate guitar.
This guitar has got to be the best ESP makes of the 50 series. For the price you pay, it actually has a very nice tone, its easy to "manuver" around the fret board and the pick ups have good substain. However the best part of this guitar is its shape! Perfect head turner... I would recommend this guitar from playing gigs to just simply practicing in your bedroom, worth the buy!
