Overview

The EMG SPC or "Strat Presence Control" is a presence control knob that is often called the fat control. The original intent of the SPC was to turn the tone of a single-coil pickup into that of a dual-coil. This is accomplished by boosting the gain in a broad mid-band fashion and reducing the highs. The result is a fatter, louder tone from any single coil pickup, but you can also use the EMG SPC on a humbucker pickup to give you a high output, really fat tone that's great for slide guitar.

EMG includes an output jack and battery clip set with the SPC control knob.

Outstanding tone!

Comments about EMG SPC Strat Presence Control Knob:

First off, let me tell you that one of these was installed in my David Gilmour EMG Strat setup. It sounded amazing, but since I am a humbucker-type guy, I replaced the bridge EMG-SA with an EMG-81... but left all the controls in place. What a terrifying prospect... the result was an amazingly gorgeous and edgy tone coming out of that 81. Since then, I have replaced all my tone knobs in my ESP M1's and Gibson Flying V's with an EMG-SPC to give me that "bite" I love so much. In combination with an 81, 85, 60, or even the intended SA is all you need to separate yourself, not only from the stage mix, but from the mushy tones of every other so-called guitarist out there. I use it through three Marshall JCM2000 DSL heads into three Marshall 1960a Slant Top cabs. It crushes the Dual Rectifier guys -- and all because of this little Presence Knob! Give it a shot!

Lot's of Boost

By BRIAN REAMES

Comments about EMG SPC Strat Presence Control Knob:

I installed the SPC in a Tele with an EMG T set. The SPC allows me to go from classic tele tones to a pretty good Les Paul impression. The tone isn't quite the same as a humbucker; there is still some of that single coil sweetness, but it's in the neighborhood. The neck position with the SPC at about one o'clock gets a jazzy mini humbucker sound--my favorite tone so far! The 6db of gain makes a surprisingly big difference in volume. This is great if you want to fatten up your tone and get your amp to break up; it acts nicely as a clean boost. If you are trying to use this as a tone knob substitute for clean tones, you'll have to adjust the volume knob and SPC together to maintain the same db level; it can be a little fiddly. I haven't had it installed long enough to determine its effect on battery life. EMG rates it for 250 hours. The pickups alone are rated for 1000 (I think). That should still be plenty of battery life for most people. The SPC adds a lot of versatility to an already great set of pickups. I've replaced the passive tone circuit with this and I don't ever see myself going back.
