Comments about EMG PJ-X Active Bass Pickup Set:

The set was easy to install. I have omitted the PU switch, implementing only the two volume controls and a tone control. It sounds fabulous in my Yamaha bass. I find it easy to vary and control my sound. Truly successful - and a boost to my performance

Comments about EMG PJ-X Active Bass Pickup Set:

Installation was NOT as easy as stated. I had to take it to a tech after I botched the wiring. Once I got it back...I was extremely happy with the power and tone of these pickups. I had these installed in an ESP LTD FB-204 (lower moddle Frank Bello signature), these PJ-Xs come in the upper end models of the Frank Bello model. The ESP standard pickups were pretty decent but I wanted to get as close to the FB204 as possible. These do not disappoint. As stated they do sound like hot, passive pickups with emphasis on low and high end (so a little scooped). Excellent with fingerstyle rock / punk. Very surprised by these as past EMGs I've played lacked character and sounded anemic/boring to me. These PJXs are a whole other EMG. Highly recommended.

    Holy Smokes What Tone!

    By Justin Mays

Comments about EMG PJ-X Active Bass Pickup Set:

I have a set of these pickups installed in a Alvarez 4 string bass that I picked up in a Pawnshop. The bass had EMG designed pickups in it but I wanted the real deal so I bought a set of these and installed them. The difference between the old tone and the new tone was mind boggling! Just as described in the product description they are super clear sounding with crunchy mids and tight bottom end. The only thing that bothered me was that my bass had to to be routed so the pickups would fit. I play grunge rock and metal and would love a set of these in a Warwick 4 string bass! These pickups may not work for all genres and styles. Always try before you buy if you are unsure what kind of pickups work best for the genre of music you play. All in all EMG has another satisfied customer in me and have done it again! Great work EMG!!

    Bad experience

Comments about EMG PJ-X Active Bass Pickup Set:

I bought these for my PJ Fender and never got them to work. I spoke with Rick at EMG and emailed him a picture of my wiring which he said was correct. He told me to send them directly to him and he would test them out. I took them to a guitar tech at GC and he told me he cringes when someone brings him a guitar with EMGs because the solderless system is a joke. He advised that I send them back which I did.

    X series

Comments about EMG PJ-X Active Bass Pickup Set:

I love Emgs, but I'm a big fan of passives also. I am a firm believer that it depends on your application, ie. amp, guitar, stage, recording, etc. That being said, Three years ago I purchased a mexi jazz bass, enjoyed the sound, of the stock pups, but of course I am never satisfied. Knowing how big of a difference emgs, made in my six strings, I decided that was the way to go for bass also. Well I was wrong. They were extremely clear, and overly harsh. The lows, seemed overly compressed, and the highs were sharp as a razor, and the tone knob does very little after installation. A year later the emg x series is released, claiming to be more organic, so I put them into an ltd vintage 204, and this is what I think. They are definitely much more organic than the regular line, but I still find the highs too harsh, but they are actually controllable with the tone knob now, the lows don't seem to be nearly as compressed, but they still don't hit the sub harmonic lows, like my dimarzios, seymours, or delanos. I use this bass mainly for recording so they suit that need perfectly, but if your wanting a raw, vintage open sound with a lot of versatility then these probably are not for you, but if you want bright, tight, and cutting, then these are perfect!

    Great bass pickups

By Gary Stevens - GS Custom Guitars

Comments about EMG PJ-X Active Bass Pickup Set:

I am a professional guitar and bass builder. I have been using EMG pickups since 1989. I just installed this set into a bass with a hollow mahogany body, birch/mahogany neck and a Cocobolo fretboard. I wired them with two 9 volt batteries for 18 volts. As always, these pickups are wonderful; clear with lots of headroom. Great with efects. I am playing through Mesa Quad Preamp and Mesa 295 power amp.

    EMG PJ-X

    By Mike B

Comments about EMG PJ-X Active Bass Pickup Set:

These pickups sound great! I do want to let you know that I had a problem with the volume pots. I thought that I had wired the pots in wrong but it ended up that the pots were bad. EMG was good about correcting the problem and sent me replacement pots. I am very pleased with the pickups and the response from EMG.
