Overview

David has used this same EMG system for many years on his main red Strat. The DG20 pickup comes with 3 ivory SA single-coil pickups, wired with an EXG guitar expander, an SPC presence control, and master volume - all on a deluxe white pearl pickguard, ivory pickups, and white knobs. The SA single-coil pickups feature Alnico magnets which give a full round tone with an accentuated mid range. The EMG-EXG guitar expander circuit increases the bass and treble while reducing the mids, perfect for chord definition at higher volumes, while the SPC makes the SAs sing by boosting the mids and turning your single coils into full blown humbucking!

Now you can have the same guitar pickups and tone accessories as David, but keep practicing if you want to get to the "Dark Side of the Moon."

EMG-EXG
For flexibility in tone at your fingertips, there is no better choice than the EXG guitar expander. The frequency response of the EXG is similar to normal guitar amp equalization. The lows and highs are boosted while the midrange is dipped out. The EXG is great for creating a fuller tone that doesn't get muddy, while keeping it clean and clear, letting your guitar stand out in the mix.

Comments about EMG-DG20 David Gilmour Pre-Wired Pickguard/Pickup Set:

I installed this product in an old Japanese Strat copy. I have had it since '82. Had many pickup configs in there. Jeff Bedk - Seymour Duncan - etc. Gilmour was a strong influence in my past and I always thought his tone was stellar so I gave it a shot. This pickup sets dynamic response is incredible. Not only are the two tone circuits very flexible but the dynamic reaction of the pickups is great. Soft os soft and hard gives you that classic Strat sound. Even Tele like in some settings. I dont know that I would agree that it is capable of sounding like a "Full blown Humbucker" which I read in one write up. I spent many years trying to get my Strat to sound like a Les Paul..... Not gonna happen. With this set up though - - best sounding and most dynamic Strat I've evey played. (And that includes more than a few American Strats) Just my opinion, but if you do like Gilmours tone - - you will LOVE this set!

Comments about EMG-DG20 David Gilmour Pre-Wired Pickguard/Pickup Set:

Let's start with the installation: Very easy to install!
The only thing I had to do was open the hole between the pickup cavity and the jack cavity in order to feed the jack plug through. This is literally a plug n play product. No soldering involved.

      Sound: Minimal buzz, screaming sound!
I have a Mexico strat that had a lot of aweful buzz (especially when I would crank the amp into overdrive or turn on any effects pedal). This is now gone with the new EMG pickups.
The SPC and EXG are not like standard tone pots. They add excitement and charisma to the sound of your guitar. You'll spend hours playing tinkering with them!
This guitar will allow you to sound like Jimi, SRV, Gilmour, etc...

      Look before you leap.

Comments about EMG-DG20 David Gilmour Pre-Wired Pickguard/Pickup Set:

I replaced the stock pickups in my 2000 American Stratocaster with this set, and there are a few things that you must be aware of before you jump in. There are effectively no tone controls on the guitar anymore. The first tone control now raises both the low and high end of the response curve as you bring up the pot. This sounds wonderful on lower volume settings, but the bottom hits very hard and without the right amp I can see how you could easily get into trouble with a loose sounding bottom at louder volumes. The second tone control now boosts the mid range and can really help put a signature sound on your solos, pedal free. With an AC 30 on the boil the guitar sounds fantastic, very powerful and in control, far more than any Strat I have ever heard in front of me. I have heard it said that guitars with this setup installed no longer sound like a Strat, but forget that; its simply not true. By the way, these pickups are as quiet as you could hope for, just be careful to isolate the ground wires as the instructions tell you. They are amazing, just be ready for the old feel and response of your Strat to be changed. I assure you that you will feel the change is for the better after just a few sessions with the guitar. I will never go back.

      High output

      By Jeremiah

      from Detroit, Michigan

Comments about EMG-DG20 David Gilmour Pre-Wired Pickguard/Pickup Set:

I recently put the DG20s in my 91 strat plus hoping for that "Gilmour" sound. These pickups do sound great. They have tones of sustain and offer a lot of flexibility with the tonal controls but I am planning on taking them out now. They have too much output and sound like they need to be grounded. They are fine for ultra clean playing, but as soon as I add any gain or volume they would pick up every electrical field in the room and it comes through the amp as I move. I wish that I could keep the tone, but only without all the added background noise.

I own 2 of these setups

Comments about EMG-DG20 David Gilmour Pre-Wired Pickguard/Pickup Set:

I wanted to replace the pickups in my 1963 Strat. The factory ones were starting to get weak. I just didnt want to mess up the value of all org. parts. I looked around and spoke to a rep. in Guitar center in Phx Az. I replaced the whole thing with Davids setup. MAN It brought the 63 to life. Every kind of tone you can think of. After about 3 Months. I bought another one and put it in my Walnut Strat. It sounds great to. Yes They cost a little money. But if you are playing. THEY ARE WORTH IT. Good playng to all. Butch

      EMG EMG-DG20 David Gilmour Pre-Wired Pickguard/Pickup Set

      By stratplayer

Comments about EMG-DG20 David Gilmour Pre-Wired Pickguard/Pickup Set:

I was very skeptical about changing the stock vintage pickups and the sound of my 1987 Fender USA Standard Strat. The Guitar Center employee was very helpful as I struggled with the decision in the store. I am very pleased to report that this upgrade far exceeds my expectations. The installation was straightforward and very simple. I have no complaints but I really donۡt understand why such a very well engineered and designed upgrade would not have a predetermined accommodation clip or secure placement for the battery. In any case, this set of pickups is just perfect for my style of playing and sound choices. I could not be happier with this product. I offer that it would not be the first choice for most metal or crunch players. However, if you are a player that is looking to expand the color pallet of a standard Stratocaster...look no further. I also have a 1989 Clapton Strat but these EMG pickups allow more character and tone to shine through. I highly recommend this setup.

Exactly what I wanted for home recording

      By George

      from Austin, TX

Comments about EMG-DG20 David Gilmour Pre-Wired Pickguard/Pickup Set:

I have two strats and wanted my 2nd one to be a really versatile rock strat that sounded great through a POD going into a digital recording system. I owned a set of these pickups awhile back and remembered how simple and clear To be sure, they won't give you a 100% retro SRV/Hendrix tone (including all the 60 cycle hum) but they sound great if you evaluate them for what they are. Plus the special tone controls are perfect for helping blend or stand out in a mix both live and when recording. If you want a more modern, versatile sound you could do a lot worse than EMG.

Comments about EMG-DG20 David Gilmour Pre-Wired Pickguard/Pickup Set:

I recently purchased a Clapton Custom Shop strat to celebrate a special birthday but then my old American Strat seemed lack luster in comparison. I purchased the EMG-DG20 is hopes of giving my old guitar a new life and I am pleased to announce that I have achieved that goal. It made a perfectly good guitat into a great guitar. It is not a Clapton Custom Shop strat but has wonderful qualities just the same that will make it stand out in any crowd.

      Use the right strat

      By Michael Hart

      from El Paso TX

Comments about EMG-DG20 David Gilmour Pre-Wired Pickguard/Pickup Set:

These pickups are very hot. I found out the hard way they are picky as to the type of strat you use. When i had them in a new squier that was very light along with an maple neck with an ebony fretboard they were terrible. Tinny sounding and unable to handle anything but a super clean channel with no bass at all, forget any distotion either. However when i switched the kit to a older and heavier squier with a maple fretboard these pickups came alive in a big way! Huge range with that promised Floyd sound. Able to sound great even with a BOSS metal zone pedal, very responsive to reverb also . I play out of a 75watt LINE-6 Spider amp, it sounds great on all the channels. Maybe with a high-end strat the kit will drop in, but with a squier get ready to do some body cavity work because of the battery and tall volume/tone pots. With some work you can have a great sounding low-end squier strat with this kit and still pay less than a stock U.S. Fender.
