I'm not the biggest fan of Children of Bodom, I like a couple of songs, but for the style of music I play this pick up is perfect. I put this i my Fender Strat as a single humbucker and single volume configuration and my guitar looks ad sound way better, I loved this pickup so much that i bought another one and pu it in my Squier Tom Delonge Sign. Strat. I never thought that i would go back to EMG's again after my old Jackson DKMGT had soo many pickup problems. I put that aside and I can assure you that this pickup is worth it if yu play the styles of music I play listed down below
This pickup literally just blew me away. Words cannot explain this what so ever. If you are metal head, LISTEN UP!!! I am going to make this the best review to date. This pickup is not an everyday EMG passive pickup. It does not sound like other EMG passives or the HZs,or 81/85, do not compare whatsoever. It is completely redesigned and cuts through the mix with ease. It is actually a redesign off of the more vintage EMG passive pickups. NOT STERILE! I SAY AGIAN, NOT STERILE! What suprised me is that the passive pickup, without the boost engaged, had more distortion, gain, and clarity than the 81X. The pickup alone does not sound bad at all. I prefer it over the 81s. Here is what everyone wants to know. How is the gain boost? What does the 3 band eq do and what does it sound like?? Okay. Here goes. The gain boost is active so it requires a battery. You can add or subtract the gain from 0-20 decibels. 20 decibels is simply friggin overkill for any pickup. The pickup already comes set to 10 decibels and it is way more than enough. You can make this pickup sound like a seymour duncan blackout if you wanted to. With this, I can dial in way more gain than an 81 can offer and the sound is literally still clear. This is because the pickup has overwound ceramic. Nowhere near as tene as the HZ models. This is actually a very clear, warm, fullsounding pickup. I know. It suprised me to. On the gain boost, does come a 3 band eq. This is not lows, mids, and highs. There are about 9 different options for tones that are measured in resonance frequency (KHZ). There is a diagram that shows you all of this. Basically, the more frequency you add in (Khz), the more midrange is produced. It just really piles on the midrange. I stuck with Alexi's settings because the setting that was one step greater than his was a complete midrange beast. I always crank the midrange alot, but that was way too much for me even. I found out that you really need to eq this pickup according to what your amp setup sounds like. You can really dial in what is missing from your amp, or you can dial back what you have too much of. You can change what your complete setup sounds like through this pickup. It just becomes the motherboard of everything like amp and cab. It blew my mind to have a pickup that joins hands with an amps tone controls which means you can really dial in your settings and really make your tone standout. Trust me, you will not sound like anyone else in a local music scene. I through my Actives away, I just can't see myself using another pickup. Simply genius. Simply amazing.
GET THIS!!! With the 3 switch EQ, you can get about... 9 different tones by changing the frequencies. I've never had a more unique sound out of my single pickup guitar. With this pickup, I was able to get a tone that sounded almost like a neck pickup, but sharper. The only thing I can say about this is that, if your guitar (I put mine in a Jackson rr24), you might have a trial getting wires to route where they are supposed to be. The set is solderless, but I had to put some wires together using my old wires. Either way, I got it to work, and I'm VERY satisfied with my tone.
I recently bought this pickup and I was blown away I installed it on my jackson v2 and it made a huge difference, it is supper loud for metal and the volume knob with the push down position gives the emg pickup an extra boost its got a clear sound not like other cheap pickups this one is really loud that u can even clearly hear your guitar pick scratching over the strings u gotta now that those are the same ones that alex laiho uses live and if u wanna sound crisp clear and loud you gotta buy it u won't regret it I seriously recomend this pickup and give a 5+3 star rating....
