The H4 is the equivalent of EMG's 81 Active Pickup without the "active" that uses two "bar" loaded coils for "balls to the walls" tone. All HZ Pickups have EMG's exclusive 5-wire quick-connect output allowing any number of wiring combinations, and are fully shielded for a minimum of noise. String grounding is recommended to further decrease noise.
I have a Schecter Damien FR guitar that came with the HZ's pre-installed, it has the H4A in the neck and the H4 in the bridge. They have great output, the cleans ring and sing, and the best part...the dirt is crunchy, sustain is great and harmonics scream.
I have a C-1 Hellraiser with EMG Active 81tw/89 set, and I love it. I also have a Stiletto Custom-4 with EMG 35Hz. They are great, too. So I decided to swap out the stock pick ups on my Yamaha AE420 with the EMG H4 and the EMG H4a. And, well, it sounds like a completely different guitar. I see this sentiment thrown around a lot, but I agree with it: If you want to get as close as you can to an EMG active sound, the EMG H4 or H4a are as close as you'll get while still being passive and not having to keep a fresh battery in your guitar. And honestly, in the future, if I buy a guitar with passive pick ups, I'll probably switch them out for the H4/H4a set up. Great job, EMG.
i put these pickups emg h4 in the bridge and the emg h4a in the neck of my ibanez rg120 and my epi goth lp and wow the sound is just awesome a friend turned me on to them. i heard them used on stage and thought they sounded good so i gave them a try then went and bought another set for my other guitar so if you want that metal crunch pick up a set little high on cost but well worth it
