An all-in-one, single- and dual-coil guitar pickup with separate preamps and a repositioned single-coil.

This humbucker pickup is the same as EMG's 89X but the coils are respositioned so that the single-coil side is nearer the neck to capture that sweet spot. Featuring two guitar pickups in one, the EMG 89XR humbucker is loaded with Alnico V magnets and has separate preamps, each providing custom outputs for both dual-coil and single-coil modes. In dual-coil mode the sound is rich, warm, and powerful, but still very clear and is similar to EMG's 85 model. In single-coil mode (which is accessed through the included push pull pot), the sound is traditional Strat single-coil tone: bright, airy, chimey, and similar to EMG's SA guitar pickup. In either mode, the clean sound is gorgeously pristine and brings a lot of presence. Used equally in bridge and neck positions, whether you are playing hard rock or smooth jazz, you can get it all with this beautifully balanced and versatile EMG 89XR pickup.

The EMG 89XR humbucker and others pickups from the X-series provide increased headroom, giving the voicing an organic and open tone while still maintaining the clarity and response that EMGs are renowned for. The EMG 89XR pickups are best described as bridging the gap between passive and active tone.

The EMG 89XR humbucker pickup package includes: EMG's exclusive Solderless Install System, a split shaft volume/tone control set, an output jack, a battery clip set, plus screws and springs.

  • Excellent tone and great clarity

As reviewed by Jason Gearhart on 1/16/2012

I bought this pickup specifically for the neck position and it does exactly what I was hoping for! Great smooth jazzy tones in humbucking, nice bluesey tones in single coil mode. Awesome clarity. When I put the distortion on you can still hear the notes in chords perfectly. It's not muddy at all. From all the reviews I've read about EMG pickups, it's the clarity and note articulation that people are really raving about. And the x-series has more breathing room for picking dynamics. If you're into Jazz, Blues, Funk, or Hard Rock, or any style in which you need the ability to vary your picking from hard chug to soft picking, this is en excellent option to go with. I chose dual mode pickups because I like a guitar to be verstile, especially since I'm on a budget and can't afford to have a closet full of strats, tele's and les pauls. I need 1 guitar to play many styles and this pickup is perfect for that. The Solderless system is relatively easy to figure out and saves the hassle and risk of burning yourself or the rubber insulation on the wires. That said, I did still have to do some minor solder on MY guitar to get the wires through to the output jack and get the selector switch working properly. But once those bits were done I was up and running within minutes! overall, great purchase!

  • Excellent Pickup!

As reviewed by Travis Fodor on 4/25/2011

I had this guitar installed in my C-1 hellraiser FR about a year ago. I can honestly say that this is one of the best pickups ever. I even got one put into my SG a month after i fell in love with it. EMG must have heard that their pickups sound horrible through clean tones, and they ran with it. Split the coil, kick on the clean channel, and this baby sounds great. Buy this pickup, it is hands down the best of both worlds. The best part of the pickup is that in order to split the coil, all you have to do is pull out the volume knob. This allows you to have instant access to a completely different tone. As said, after a year this pickup yields no problems and great quality. If your going for a metal look, this is the pickup to buy!

my good friend has an emg in her les paul standard and its sounds amazing. it just gives it that extra push of tone without giving up amplification. also, this is one versatile pickup. from jazz to hard rock this thing is a burst of tone with sweet bright highs and mellow lows. i love this pickup.
