      EMG 81-7X 7-String Active Guitar Pickup (712846)
Availability:

A high-output, 7-string humbucker that's ideal for lead guitar, soloing, and high-volume overdrive.

The high-output EMG 81-7X active guitar pickup is designed especially for the 7-string lead guitarist. The 81 is at its best for high-volume overdrive and amps with a master volume. Whether you're playing power rock 'n' roll or overdriving your amp, there's a razor-sharp attack and incredible sustain for brilliant soloing. If you're looking for exceptional qualities in a 7-string rock pickup, the EMG 81-7X is the one.

The 81-7X and other EMG pickups from the X-Series provide increased headroom, giving the voicing an organic and open tone while still maintaining the clarity and response that EMGs are renowned for. The EMG 81-7Xs are best described as bridging the gap between passive and active tone.

The EMG 81-7X guitar pickup package includes: EMG's exclusive Solderless Install System, a split shaft volume/tone control set, an output jack, a battery clip set, plus screws and springs.

  • BIG Beautiful Tone...

As reviewed by T.D. on 2/16/2011

I got this pickup to replace a stock 707 in my recently purchased Agile Interceptor 7-string. The 707 sounds fine, but to me it's a little too harsh in the high frequencies, and not quite as powerful as the 81. This new "X" series provides more headroom = warmth and body in the sub frequencies, also seems to have a more even, defined, and articulate mid to high frequency response then the original 81 series. I play a sort of speed/melodic progressive metal and my trem picking sounds flawless, chords are full, and string alterations are intricate, everything is very distinguished and easy to understand with this pickup. The harmonics are crisp and clear, the first pinch i pulled through this thing made me laugh because of how powerful and piercing it was, and that was on my little vypyr practice amp. When I let it loose on my main rig (fja modded 6505plus, overdriven with bad monkey, sonic maximizer, mxr compressor, noise decimator rack unit, into a celestion loaded carvin cab, also I play on ghs precision flatwounds) the tone is just Ridiculous, could'nt stop playing for about 5 hours straight. Even on a low gain setting this pickup sounds great IMO. I like my cleans to break up a little bit at times and this thing offers a crisp and clear clean tone with lots of sustain on any setting. If I want a pretty, bluesy warm clean I just switch over to the stock 707 neck pickup and kill the bad monkey. They claim that this humbucker bridges the gap of active and passive pickups, i've tried a few passive and active pickups over the years; blackouts, dimebucker, H4A series, I've yet to try the bare knuckles but plan to use those on an upcoming project of mine... anyway, I always seem to go back to the 81 for some reason. Really it's all about your personal preferences, what sounds good to you. For me this does the trick. It has the clarity and articulation of a passive, and the drive and responsiveness of an active.
