Dongled... heavy... slow load times...

By zevo

from ...

Three bad things: 1. Heavy load, even on a Core 2 Duo. I also use SampleTank 2.2XL, and Proteus X2 is twice as heavy, but doesn't sound twice as good (about the same, really). 2. Extremely slow load time of any project with this involved. Depending on which sample set, it can take minutes... MINUTES... even if this is the only thing in the project, and only one instance. This is with Cubase, Sonar, and Project5. Goofy. 3. Dongled, but they don't even stop there. A dongle I might could live with... MIGHT. But, EMU has decided that deception is the best sales tactic. So, the box says that there's a 2x2 midi interface "included," as if they're giving you something for free. They're not. It's a dongle. Geez, a dongle would have been better, since the 2x2 midi interface needs reassigned in Cubase, Sonar and Project5 every time you open the app. Besides, I don't need another midi interface. Luckily, I have other EMU gear (for a little while longer) that also works as the dongle (1616M). One good thing: 1. It's cheap and fairly inexpensive to expand. Would I buy it again? No. Would I recommend it? No. Options: SampleTank Wusikstation (bit of a different take though) Dimension Pro (another different take)

nice production tool

The Proteus X2 is a descent synth. There are a couple of flaws in it but many good things as well. First the bad:I spent 20 minutes installing, registering and launching the synth, it takes about 1 minute and 1/2 to load in my DAW host. To me the midi box is useless because I use a USB controller. The grand piano sounds are not good enough, and the general midi patches tasteless. The good: From the Xproducer CD and the Beat Shop CD,this synth plays many nice patches, punchy basses, stomp and subs, dozens of nice drum sets with a fresh attitude, many strong pads, I like the acoustic orchestral sounds. I used the Proteus X2 VST with 3 other plugins on my host with about 30% CPU usage. It is very stable Overall I like that thing, and the price is right. Even without free upgrades, I would buy the next version for sure, if it comes out a bit better.
