Like another reviewer, I used to use Dunlop Tortex picks exclusively (standard gauge, .73mm). They worked fine, but the rounded tip and grip of the material made it a little difficult to play some things quickly and accurately. Don't get me wrong, I still love the grip of the Tortexes (you will never drop one!), but that's also their downfall - the material grips the strings just as well as it does your fingers, making for sloppier and slower string release. No such problems here. While the Ultex picks might be sliightly less easy to grip (I've never had issues with it), the DRASTIC improvement in speed and release make it entirely worth it. These picks will also force your strumming to improve as well as your flatpicking - the sharp edge demands more accuracy in strumming more advanced rhythmic patterns (it's very easy to miss some strings, or have the pick get caught on some if you're not careful). Of course you could always switch to a round side, but still. Amazing picks, couldn't live without 'em.

Overall, the quality and sound of this pick is all there. I just prefer to have a bit more depth to the sound of my picks that the Ultex just can't deliver. The ultex is one of the fastest tracking picks I have used, but as far as sound is concerned, I think it lacks. There are much better sounding, yet unfortunately much more expensive picks in this catagory out there. If I were looking for the Ultex type of sound (which now I know I don't like) I would go with the Cool Juratex. The Cool Juraex tracks like the Ultex while retaining some warmth of say the Tortex pick. Like I said earlier, much better choices out there sound wise than the Ultex.
The Dunlop Ultex Sharp Picks have a great feel/grip without doing anything to it like adding sandpaper, or scoring it. The "Sharp" tip is comparable to the Jazz III tip. I bought a couple packages of these to try out based off of Paul Riario from Guitar World's review of them. Personally, I agree that they have an excellent attack, grip, and bright tone, but I think the brightness combined with a lack of depth in sound that is created from the pick is a bit overwhelming for electric guitar. That being said, it all depends on what style of music your playing. I prefer a warmer sound with nice crystally highs. The Ultex does NOT deliver on the warmt. They do however track very tightly. I guess I'm just used to the sound of my trusty Tortex III picks. The III's point, like the Ultex Sharp, helps to attain those crystally highs without sacraficing the warmth. I feel that the Ultex is just too "brittle" I sounding. I have the Ultex a 6 because they are not a bad pick at all, just not for me. I could see using these on a big warm Martin acoustic guitar though.
Dunlop picks are always of great quality.
Musician's Friend prices are always right; Especially in the accessories department.

Comments about Dunlop Ultex Sharp Picks - 6 Pack:

Great pick. Many fast pick lines performed with my other brand pick did not compare to the Dunlop Ultex 1.40 guitar pick. I would say the pick is a game changer to a large degree, as it adds more high-mids to my tone with articulation. The beginning part of my signal chain is my guitar pick - improved my entire tone. I would recommend to try this pick if you are studio recording musician or looking for a tighter overall tone.

Comments about Dunlop Ultex Sharp Picks - 6 Pack:

I haven't shopped picks for years since I had found a good one for flat-picking in the Dunlop Big Stubby 1.0 mm. I was tone checking a few acoustics recently to purchase when I found my Stubby I brought along was cracked and the proprietor offered up one of these to use. Needless to say, I ended up ordering up a few packs of these because they are nice and rigid and to the point. Definitely an improvement in tone for all the acoustic guitars I have. I used to file down the Stubbys in a similar way to how these are already shaped once they were worn. These seem less likely to wear down as quickly as the Stubbys. The bottom line is that they are a stable pick to hold and improve tone and put a snap in the sound of an acoustic guitar. Pick these and pick a winner.

I have been assured that these picks have not changed since just a couple years or so ago.
That inly the RHINO logo is different.
But I do not agree. I always used the 1.13 thickness and would have for ever. But I have purchased these newer ones several times in hopes that there might have been just a batch problem or difference.
But no luck, they are changed and do not seem the same thickness or density / hardness?
Nor do they produce the same tone

Everyone is picky about their picks. I have liked Dunlop Tortex for years, using various thicknesses for different guitars and playing styles. My only complaint was quick tip wear. The Ultex pick stays sharp, which gives me more options for dynamics without changing picks. I bought some 1mm Ultex and have used them for everything and on everything. I haven't felt the need for any other thickness.

If you play/strum hard with this pick it tends to break at the tip rather than wear down.I know it is a brittle pick and that's what some people like about it,but when I'm playing live(or recording) the last thing I want to be thinking about is the stupid pick breaking and chipping at the tip.I'll be going back to tortex picks although they don't last as long,at least they don't break.
