The Jim Dunlop Eric Johnson Signature Fuzz Face distortion guitar effects pedal was built to EJ’s precise specifications. When you think about Eric Johnson, you think tone, and the tone he's best known for is his sweet, singing, lead tone. His choice for getting that tone has always been the Fuzz Face.
Eric Johnson worked closely with Fuzz Face guru Jeorge Tripps to create his signature pedal. It is inspired by EJ’s prized personal Fuzz Faces and is built to his incredibly strict specifications, featuring hand-selected BC183 silicon transistors (for higher gain), custom reproduction ’68-’69 knobs, and a vintage-style hammertone finish. The result: a beautifully dynamic, expressive and powerful pedal. “I first heard the Fuzz Face when I was about 12 and loved playing through it,” he says. “It’s the classic tone used by Jimi Hendrix, one of my greatest influences. Eric Johnson's magnificent contribution to the Dunlop Fuzz Face legacy has a great drive, and gainy tone while staying true to the tube-like sound. A simple two-knob interface makes dialing your tone easy (Volume and Gain), although the pedal responds strongly to your guitars volume knob. It has silicone transistors (opposed to germanium transistors), and sounds great on the clean channel of any amp. Although, it doesn't respond well to digital amps. By tweaking the knobs on the pedal, and the EQ on your amp, you can create fantastic sonic sounds. Overall, a great buy.
When these pedals first started coming out, I thought for sure this would be a great pedal with Eric Johnson behind it.
Unfortunately, this was not the case. My favorite Guitar
Center in Tulsa,OK had just got 2 of these in stock. The
first one I tried out of the box, would not work properly.
I plugged into the second pedal, and I noticed you have to turn the guitar's volume up quite a bit to get any distortion.
I also had to turn the fuzz knob all the way up. The sound I got out of it was meager at best. For $200.00, I just did
not find the need to purchase this pedal with lack luster
results. My old Jimi Hendrix Fuzz Face sounded much better
than this. Another thing I noticed as to quality issues,
was one of these pedals had the rubber face plate on top,
crooked so that the white Dunlop label was partially covered. This pedal was disappointing, and I left without
buying it.
