I love this guitar so much. I have the blacked out version and everywhere I go it turns heads. The sound is incredible and it is really sweet for blues. I would easily recommend this guitar to anyone whether your just looking for something to dink around on or if your looking to whip out some Stevie Ray Vaughan.

O.k. here goes...got one, and it needs work I would only recommend to a friend that knows how to work on guitars...the chineese don't do much of anything well. I have read that you need to open it up, and sand down the rough wood and re-adjust, and replace the garbage strings that come on it.... String buzzes, because clearances in the belly of the beast were not checked. strings on the bridge don't have the required notch halfway up the string, some have no notch at all, and I suspect that pickup wasn't tightened well enough not to rattle in the mount. I guess I bought a wood box I have to set up and upgrade... well Gibson doesn't make them anymore because they priced themselves out of business, and sales slumped...
If you want something done right, you have to do it yourself...I will be back when I get this thing sounding like it should...nice looking on the outside, but rough on the inside...

Comments about Dobro Hound Dog Square Neck Resonator Guitar:

When playing song melodies, (notes) the Dobro sounds like a tin can. when playing cords, sounds beautiful. Compared to a tele, which is in standard tuning, and the Dobro in open "G", makes it all very awkward to play. The resonator causes a lot of feed back, from the amp, no matter how far it's from you. You have to keep the amp turned way down, then you can't hear the amp. Very disappointing. But not giving up on it. Going to keep at it, till it sings like my tele. Music books for this instrument are far and few in between, let along trying to find someone that gives lessons or pointers on this. Going on line has been very little help.

Comments about Dobro Hound Dog Square Neck Resonator Guitar:

This is a quality Gibson reso - forget the chinese built bull - Gibson products always hold their value and they're well built to Gibson standards - some might disagree with the quality but try this before you decide - it is good and it is very playable - you will have fun with this dobro and if you are creative you will find your sound - sure there are more expensive models on the market but the Hound Dog Deluxe is a sweet dobro and I find that I can't put it down - I want to keep playing it. The Fishman pup is also fine and if you get creative with where and how you pick over the resonator you can get some very mellow or swampy tones - it is a versatile dobro that will do what you make it do - you are the player!

Comments about Dobro Hound Dog Square Neck Resonator Guitar:

This was received in a case that I purchased. I do not find any flaws in the workmanship. The only thing I have found after playing it for a couple weeks and pluging it in. The strings need replaced but there are no knocks, dings,or rattles. It may or may not be the best dobro anyone can afford but it is a very big step for most to move up and become a better player. Enjoy!

Ain't nothin' but a Hound Dog Deluxe

      By Mark Schmelzer

      from Thompson, Ohio

Comments about Dobro Hound Dog Square Neck Resonator Guitar:

I was looking to get into a square neck Dobro for less than $500. Unfortunately, I am a tone freak. Most of the entry level square necks are dull sounding with little sustain. I listened to a lot of high end instruments (Scheerhorn, Beard, etc)to get a feel for what I like. Next I looked for every you-tube video featuring lower end dobro playing to compare. There aren't many, but I did hear a couple featuring the Hound Dog Deluxe. I liked what I heard. Sometimes a great player can make a good impression about any instrument. There's only so much tone to work with within any instrument. Took a chance. Ordered the Hound Dog Deluxe. Delivered quickly, in pristine condition. This is a good value of instrument for the money. The deluxe has a built in Fishman pickup which works pretty well with an acoustic amp and even better with a pre-amp/EQ. The only thing I would have liked would be a case of some sort - even a gig bag. But the dobro itself...as a learner, I will have a long way to go before I grow out of this one and it will not hamper the learning process in it's construction, playability or tone. It will bring you pleasure to play. I would have given 5 stars for any kind of case. It is a 5 star value as an entry level dobro...

      nice quality for the cash

By Usually play a Tele !

      from south

Comments about Dobro Hound Dog Square Neck Resonator Guitar:

The thing about it is that this is not a hi end Instrument but exceeds low end performance and quality by a country mile. Reasonable sound with or without the pickup. I plug into a Baggs Para Di and I am fine with the overall performance. Is it the best sound on the planet ? No, but it is not supposed to be for the price. I would place this Isntrument in above entry level but any seasoned player can use this axe on any gig and be pleased with it. Dobro to simple / small / very tight duo or trio gigs ? I don't think so, but this one fits the bill Plus it's simply just a great Instrument to learn on if you are a novice.

Save your money for something better.

      By CroweFan

      from Iowa

Comments about Dobro Hound Dog Square Neck Resonator Guitar:

I bought this resonator and within 15 minutes of opening the box it came in, I boxed it up and sent it back. The quality of the guitar was really poor. The finish had some imperfections here and there, the fretboard had a chip in it, and the action out of the box was terrible. I was disappointed with the sound as well, it sounded more like an acoustic guitar than a resonator. I was expecting this guitar to be way better quality than it is.

      Pickup not worth it

      By reso fan

      from east coast

Comments about Dobro Hound Dog Square Neck Resonator Guitar:

The pickup that comes with this reso is terrible, with an almost complete loss of low end frequencies. Buy the model without the pickup and invest in a decent gooseneck mic. The finish work on my model had several flaws.

Great instrument- problems with pick up!

      By Anonymous

      from Undisclosed

Comments about Dobro Hound Dog Square Neck Resonator Guitar:

Great instrument. Plays and sounds great, and the built in Fishman pick up also sounds pretty good. Aside from some really annoying buzz/rattling problems, my biggest issue is a high frequency that seems to be ringing over anything I do. It's basically the 4th fret harmonic that for some reason is amplified to an extend that it interferes with the harmony of what I'm playing!! When tuned to open G, the high frequency comes from the high "E-string" and is a high F# note.I don't know why this particular overtone is so loud, but it's a big problem and I have no idea what to do about it....
