I've only owned this pedal for about two weeks now, and it has earned a permanent spot on my pedalboard. I have a couple of great distortion pedals, but none of them could get me the type of sound that has a little dirt and sustain without sacrificing the detail of the notes, especially when playing chords or shuffles. This baby does it!! It has a great overdrive sound, and is one of the least expensive pedals on the market. It's well built and works well with the other pedals in my arsenal. I haven't tried the speaker sim output direct to a board yet, but I'm anxious to try it. It's a keeper!!

1st off,The Bad Monkey isn't a terrible OD, but it is certainly lacking. I've had one for years, I keep as a spare. The Bad: not very loud - 12:00 is unity volume, not leaving much left to goose the front end. 2nd - the OD tone sounds thin & digital, like the OD model on a budget multi FX processor(Zoom). It sucks tone pretty bad when it's off. Not a great "plug into the clean channel" OD. The good:The bass/treble controls make finding a usable setting easy - very useful if your amp/pedals are set specifically. Works best boosting what's already dirty. This is esentially a beginners (or backup) pedal, and a great jumping off point for future classic rockers to start to find out how to get that tone out of their head, but ultimately, it doesn't compare to something like an OCD or pork loin. Thanks

Classic tone!

Comments about DigiTech DBM Bad Monkey Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I came across the Bad Monkey after reading reviews on some other websites. I figured for the price, I had to check it out. This pedal is superb! This is the classic TS sound that you hear everywhere. The great thing about the Monkey, is the bass control, which lets you beef up the bottom end where alot of other TS pedals drop out. You cannot go wrong with this pedal. I use it primarily for my lead tone to cut throught the mix.

Great Success

By Dalton Evans

Comments about DigiTech DBM Bad Monkey Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I was looking for an overdrive/gain boost pedal so i could get a Trivium/Zakk Wylde sound on my leads and solos and this pedal doesn't disappoint. It is a also great for the blues as well. I have only had it for a week maybe and i love it. Its great for just a boost in your sound or to be the key to your tone. I like to run it into my Digitech RP300 for a good lead sound. If your are looking for a nice blues/rock sound or just a boost in your gain this is the pedal for you!

Love it!

By Logan

Comments about DigiTech DBM Bad Monkey Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

This is simply one of the best overdrive/distortion pedals I've played. I've played through everything from a Keeley TS9 to a Way Huge Pork Loin/Fat Sandwich to a Zvex Box of Rock. This cheap little seasick green stomp is the best drive I've played. It's incredibly versatile with the low and high EQ controls. Right now it's the only drive on my pedalboard and I play nearly everything. If you are scared of the price or don't want to be embarrased to have such a cheap pedal, buy it and I guarantee you will not regret it.

Comments about DigiTech DBM Bad Monkey Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

This is one of the best OD units I have ever used! I've been playing for over 30 years, and I must say this pedal is terrific... Smooth and warm, the monkey can do it all. If you must have a TS-9, go ahead..I'd rather have two of these babies for the same price...pick one up!

Solid Overdrive... Not Distortion

By DMBluesBoy

from Des Moines, IA

Comments about DigiTech DBM Bad Monkey Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

Bought this from the local GC a month or so ago. This is a very good pedal for blues or blues-rock. I would not recommend it for someone wanting a hard rock/metal distortion sound with tons of sustain. I wanted it for a little more edge than the drive channel on my Fender Blues Deluxe, and it delivers pretty well. It does color the tone a little more than the Sparkle Drive does, for example, but not enough to justify the price difference for me. Great Value.

Really good overdrive at a good price.

By Fnord23

from Wichita, KS

Comments about DigiTech DBM Bad Monkey Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I must admit that I have never been too impressed by tube overdrive stompboxes but the Digitech Bad Monkey is really good. I bought it to punch up my tone before going into my distortion with the price and Digitech durability being the main reasons I chose this model. It works great for that, but it also had a good sound with a High and Low control that lets you get a fatter sound than alot of overdrives out there. I've been using it without my amps distortion at 3 o'clock gain, 3 o'clock low, max high and 12 o'clock level for a pretty nice sound. I use max low and high with a 9 o'clock gain with my amps distortion and it really gives me a chunky metal rhythm sound.

You ever pugged in something...

By Hot rodheart

Comments about DigiTech DBM Bad Monkey Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

And knew immediately it was a permanent fixture in your rig? Yeah, me neither. Until tonight! I originaly purchased this filthy orangutan not expecting much more than a serviceable boost for leads. It is much more than "usable". I got that, and much more. It is totally competent on it's own for great rythm crunch, too. If you run it with no other ODs or Distortions with gain and EQ dimed, expect a Jow Walsh "Funk #49" kind of vibe from it. Good, full sound. None of the harshness and buzz of most Dist pedals I've tried, but more usable gain than any OD pedal I've tried. What a bargain! I gave it a 4 on features, cuz there aren't many. Only what you need. I'm using it to drive the front end of my PODXT Live for a little more gain, volume and sustain on leads.

Great Pedal But Not Good for Heavy Solos.

By Anonymous

from Boston,MA

Comments about DigiTech DBM Bad Monkey Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

This is an awesome pedal for rythem and some blues but if you want a good pedal for a heavy distortion solo I would choose the next pedal up wich I am pretty shure is the hot head. I use a 10 wat Marshal amp wich has good sound but not top of the line. This pedal is very easy to turn on and off. But I highly recomed that you buy a power supply to go with it. It eats up batteries very fast. You should get a 9 volt 200 mili amp power supply.

Comments about DigiTech DBM Bad Monkey Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I got this pedal like a month ago and i'm totally in love with it. It's perfect if you're looking for that sound from tube amps to play rock and roll, or maybe indie rock. I combine it with a RAT and sounds great! Go get it now, you won't regret this purchase

Bad Monkey is good!

By RockDaddy

from Lake Forest, CA

Comments about DigiTech DBM Bad Monkey Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

Out of the millions of overdrive stomp boxes out there for you to choose, this one is a winner. It's inexpensive, built like a tank and the overdrive is natural and smooth. Compared to the TS9 which I also bought (WAY more expensive), the Monkey matches or outperforms it in all ways. The ability to separate bass and treble is vital in letting your guitars' personality stay in the signal chain. In fact, as far as overdrive pedals go nothing in the $40-$80 price range even comes close. I'm playing several different Strats through both a Super-Sonic and a Blues Jr. This is where it seems to sound the best. In general, I've never particularly thought Digitech products were very good - Always sounded too thin and transistorized for me. Not this one. If you're looking for distortion, this is not the choice. Gritty, lightly overdriven blues or rock, This is it. look no further.

Bad Monkey Overdrive delivers

By Tom Leach

from Huntsville, AL

Comments about DigiTech DBM Bad Monkey Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I am in a classic rock, blues type of band, playing rhythm. Our lead guy just uses his amp for natural overdriven sounds, but I need some help to get a good overdrive. I was using the Behringer overdrive, but needed more punch. The Bad Monkey improved my dirty sound and also has the advantage of a level control. I am able to turn off my noisy EQ pedal for most songs. I have never used a boutique pedal by comparison, but I will say that this is much better than the Behringer and that my band mates commented on my improved tone.

Nice Work Digitech!

By Steve

from Olney, MD

Comments about DigiTech DBM Bad Monkey Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I play a MIM strat through a Mesa Boogie DC-2 and I'm a bit obsssed with tone. I spent a lot of time trying tubescreamer type pedals and found that this gave me pretty much the same sound as any of the Ibanez pedals, warmer in fact, and compared favorably with other boutique peadals like a Zen Drive as well. I use it as a boost (gain at 9:00) on my lead channel with the gain set at 12:00 and it pushes the amp just into that sweet spot for most everything but metal which it could do on the right amp (think Metallica). A little tweak of my guitar volume and I can go from Skynard to Green Day. Very transparent and no volume drop. The tone controls are what makes this pedal the equal of a keeley modded TS pedal. Great pedal for the money.

Great on BASS!

By Rinos88

from Morton, Illinois

Comments about DigiTech DBM Bad Monkey Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I got one of these because it was cheap and I was curious. I took it home and plugged it into my guitar rig and was very pleasantly surprised at how warm and punchy it was. It also makes a great lead spike. However, I'm primarily a bass player and decided to put it in the loop with one of my custom Dean basses and highly modified Ampeg stack. I can't believe how well it translates for bass. It is great growl without sounding fuzzy and digital. I think with a little more experimentation, I'll find a permanent place in my bass rig for it. I never expected it to work for bass this well.

Great pedal

By Levi

from Georgetown, Ky

Comments about DigiTech DBM Bad Monkey Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

This is a great pedal that everyone should have on their board. Works great as a boost for distortion or by itself. After you get EQ'd, mess with the gain and level to find what you want. With everything maxed out, it kinda did the ACDC thing. Add wah and it screams. If you back the gain all the way off and EQ it again, it is great for country or blues. When using it for a boost, it will sustain your signal till it feeds back. The four knobs are great for dialing in tone. Some have mentioned that some knobs are harder to turn than others. This is true, but you are gonna have that on just about any pedal because of the way a pot works. This is really not an issue for me. They are not scratchy and they do their job, so that is all that matters. I do not see this thing breaking any time soon, but you never know. It is not true bypass, but neither are those boss pedals sitting on your board. This IS NOT a heavy overdrive. If you want a really, really heavy drive, go grab a Boss SD-1 or another overdrive pedal to drive it. The battery is under the "stomp" part of the pedal and the power supply is at the top of it. I am pretty picky about what I like, and I really like this pedal. Once you get EQ'd (which differs from player to player), it sounds great.

Good pedal for the price

By G.

from St. Louis, MO

Comments about DigiTech DBM Bad Monkey Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I really like using this pedal for giving my tubes that extra oomph while on overdrive. The Bad Monkey is definitely a good tube-screamer-like pedal with a modest price. Whether it's my 7-string or my Les Paul, the Bad Monkey definitely does the job.
