  • Buy It

As reviewed by Dave K. on 1/7/2011

I'm very, very happy having finally bought this piece of gear. Extremely versatile yet simple. I highly recommend installing the two pieces of software off their site so you can edit and control it through your computer. That also allows for direct play & record via USB into Cubase. There are 70 presets. Some useless, some fun, some exactly what I wanted. There are enough editable parameters to really allow for shaping the preset. And changing a parameter really makes a difference to the sound so it is worth taking the time to experiment. The amp modeling section is more than I expected to find in what I think of as an effects box. I spent a lot of months agonizing over whether to get a new guitar, a new amp or this. I an so satisfied I scrimped and got this. Now, I play clean ? something my amp can handle ? the RP355 handles all the sonic goodness and I love my guitar even more. Physically, the unit is more rugged than I imagined it would be. The pedal works smoothly. My only complaint is that it can be a pain to switch from edit mode to play mode ? you have to hit two pedals simultaneously ? if you're not using the computer to edit. I'll sum it up with what I said to a buddy after I demoed it: ?Now that's what an electric guitar is supposed to sound like!?

  • It'll get the job done if you know it well, and can spare the time.

As reviewed by Bryant Seavey on 3/11/2013

I've owned this pedal for about 3 years now. I've learned a lot about it since I bought it to hopefully save some money on guitar effects. I've spent a fair share of time perfecting each tone. As a seasoned player, I tend to be very picky about what I want to hear. Surprisingly enough, this pedal actually has the capability of sounding exactly like a stompbox with the correct settings. I've gotten pretty good sounds out of it for the money saved. There are also a couple of things that are kind of a waste. Pros: Good tones with some work recording capability is very useful and sounds great USB connection Amp/Mixer switches make all the difference Various options for connectivity/ useful for multiple instruments Very reliable if taken care of Cons: Fragile Tricky power supply/ no option for battery usage Complicated interface Time consuming Multiple effects/features I've deemed useless -amp/cabinet modeling -pickup and acoustic simulators -looper -expression pedal (Only useful for volume control) -chromatic tuner

  • Lots of Potential, Limited Use of It

As reviewed by Mark Hansen on 1/22/2013

I am amazed at the number of parameters that this device offers. Seemingly an infinite number of combinations. It's really a complex computer, and I'd have to be a programmer or an audio engineer to take full advantage of its potential. The construction is solid, and the foot switches are quiet and responsive. However, I was very disappointed by the 70 factory presets that came with the unit. At least 50 of them are just variations of "fuzz". (Not just dirty overdrive or distortion, but extreme ripsaw fuzz.) Many of the presets are practically identical in sound, although using different parameter combinations. And almost a dozen of them have echo delay in them, which makes them of no value to me. (In my 45 years of playing guitar, I don't recall hearing any prominent performing or recording guitarist using echo.) Finally, some of the presets are just plain useless, like the "swell" (reverse decay), the 3rd harmony, the octave-up whammy, or the one that sounds like a ring modulator. I would much preferred if the presets were a variety of actual sounds used by famous guitar players/groups/songs. It would also have been great if there were presets for 12-string, mandolin, or even banjo. I was able to modify some of the presets to get certain sounds I wanted, like a James Brown funk, or a Duane Eddy twang, but it took me hours of experimentation. I suppose that if you are trying to create "your own" never-heard-before sound, this device is perfect. But for a player like me, who does Top 40 dance music and musical theater, it lacks most of what I need out of the box. All in all, a good device, worth the money, but it needs a lot of time-consuming after-purchase customization.
