I was recommended this drum microphone set from a friend/ GC employee and the first time I started experimenting with placement techniques, I noticed that they sounded perfect regardless of the style used! All of the microphones have a great balance of color and accuracy considering the price. The two year "pro coverage" that protects against just about anything for an additional $, you can't go wrong. I would recommend this to any drummer, engineer, etc. They sound great through my Fast Track Ultra 8R (Octane Preamps). Obviously, their tone will vary between preamps, but you won't be disappointed
I've had these microphones for about two years now and I can't say I'm all that impressed. They are good, but there are conditions to that statement. First, the mounting technique they use is terrible. Absolutely awful, the worst I've ever seen for drum mics. Second, they don't deal with snare drums all that well, in fact I liked the condensers it came with for my snare drum better than the regular mics. Third, the bass drum mics are very temperamental. I've tried them in many positions on the bass drums and even with a port hole in both my bass drums, they are still fairly difficult. I play death metal/black metal/deathcore so I switch between 1/4, 1/8 and 1/16 notes quite a bit and the bass mics were a significant problem because they couldn't handle the difference in volume.
For the first problem, I'm slowly switching all of my mics over to audix drum mic clip stands because they work like a charm.
For the second problem, I couldn't really do anything at all so I stuck with the regular tom/snare mic, but it took hours of work to get it right.
For the third problem, I placed the bass mics on my two floor toms because they sounded amazing like that, and I'm using acoustic triggers and a drum module for my bass drums.
Yes, I had many problems with these mics. But once I had everything sorted out, they sound pretty great. I was most impressed with how natural and great the toms sounded.
I bought this mic set due to the advice from one of the salesman at GC in the drum department. I was looking for some decent drum mics for my home studio, and after looking at several higher end ideas, he stated this was "definately the way to go". He had steered me right on other equipment, so I trusted him on this purchase... To be fair, for the price, you do get enough mics to mic up a 4 piece set. The tom and snare mics are low to mid level dynamics and the condensers are a bit more quality. The bass drum mic is a dynamic mic that is basically the same as the tom mics but in a larger foodprint and really cant handle the pressures from the kick, so not to hot. Thru a mixer and live, they actually do the job pretty well. When I tried recording with these guys, the true quality was relieved. The toms are muddy, the snare is not crisp, and the overheads are passable. The bass mic is essentially worthless on the kick and was quickly returned to the flimsy plastic case that it came in. I will also add that the mounting system is bogus. Prepare to invest in stands if your going to use this stuff seriously. Bottom line, live with some stands and a SM57 on the snare, Beta 52 on the kick, you get some pretty decent sounds, but in the studio, spend a little extra and get some 57's and a good kick mic and two overhead condensers (the 100-200 dollar range are putting out awesome mics these days, i.e AKG/Rhode). Actually, I'm getting awesome sounds from a kick, snare and two good overheads. Much more organic and open sounding than compressing the crap out of a bunch of tom mics...
