The only problem I had was a very big problem. Once installing I was not able to record in pro-tools le due to constant errors telling me to adjust the buffersize. Once I went to the digidesign website, and got a couple of tips on how to fix the problem I finally got it to work. So for anyone considering buying this product I would advise you to make sure that your computer is a approved computer by the websites standards and not whats on the box. There is a big difference between the two. The quality of the sound is top of the line and it is very easy to use due to the ignition pack instruction CD that comes with it. The plug-ins are sweet especially reason adapted but they leave a little to be desired. Overall if you can get to work on your computer it's a very good buy especially at that price. But you may want to consider the M-Box 2 because it comes with more plug-ins and has midi inputs which you may eventually consider.

For people who have been using ProTools LE-based systems - like owners of digi001's or digi002's, the MBox2mini finally provides a way to use protools on the go for editing/mixing, without having to carry around a big peripheral. One of the biggest drawbacks of the famed "easy to use" protools le software, is that it WON'T RUN WITHOUT protools le hardware connected to the computer. Perhaps this is digidesign's security system: no use of the software without hardware. When other manufactures have worked out ways to sell their products without hobbling the user (like Live's authorization scheme) surely digi could do likewise? In any case, if you already own/use a protools le system, with this box you can pay 300 dollars for a small device - effectively an expensive dongle - that will let you finally edit remotely - and even record a few extra bits too if need be. For folks in this position, that 300 may just be worth it.

Get the real deal

By VSTRocker

from Greenville, SC

This is a great tool for what it is intended for - traveling musicians, definetely not for home musicians. The quality of the audio at 24 bit is great especially jumping from a 16bit cocnverter. However, the biggest problem I found with this unit and the one at the store and from other users is the high pitched frequency noise from the outputs that you just can't get rid of. The software is great, I'm very pleased with it, however the plugins could be a bit better and better assorted. The ignition pack is only a sample of all these programs so you are just getting a taste, literally, of what you have to buy. Another issue I ran into is that I cannot hear the sounds from the internet even with the MME Helper you download from their site to assist you with this problem. If you are using this soley for recording and no internet and media get it.

Installation problems

By Daniel

from Duluth, Ga

Pro tools would not install on my computer even though it meet all of the specs for install. There is no easy tech support for this kind of problem so you on your own to try and make it work. After five days with no luck installing this I given up. since Software cant be returned its going in the trash. Unless you need this software I would recommend trying anything else first thats cheaper and will probably work on any computer.

It's ok but not for Mac users

By Eric

from Palmdale, CA

I got the Mbox 2 Mini with the Pro Tools 8 upgrade. After spending 2 weeks with this interface I have realized it's wrecking my iMac which runs OSX Leopard 10.5.6. The USB connection overpowers the computer and causes it to get stuck and make all programs not respond. I have asked about this in Digidesign's forums and they are aware of the problem for over 2 years (since OSX 10.4.9) and applies to ALL MBOX 2 SERIES, they still don't want to take care of the problem. Overall the interface is OK but the tech support by Digidesign is really really bad and not worth the money spending on this device.

Great for Home Studios

By Daniel Blacktin

from Santa Clara, California

I've been making music for about 3 years and I didn't know what to use. I had started with a USB Condenser and Cool Edit Pro. Then upgraded to Adobe Audition using an AKG Perception 120 and an M-Audio Interface. The sound the m-box produces is amazing. I recommend to buy if you are looking for a good sound.

I like the software and Hardware, But not Support

By Peymon

from Fremont, CA

I purchased this unit a month ago and I am a Mac User (MacBook Pro) ProTool 8.03 installed on my Mac no issues , I even like the DVD that it came with it with step by step on how to use the Pro tool. But , the driver was causing noise within Pro tool and Logic on my mac.. And I was to do a recording that day and no one in Guitar center and or Pro tool was able to help. Out of Curiosity I check the download section of the Pro tool LE for Snow Leopard OSX 10.6.4 and wallah ...There is an upgrade to 8.04 for Pro Tool LE and once downloaded (Big File) and installed , problem was resolved.. , It also works well with Reason and Logic Rewired. I hope this helps some one...else...

Compatibility Issues

By The Beast

from Dallas, TX

I recently moved to Pro Tools LE for the Mbox 2 mini after using the emu 1616M with cubase LE. As far as hardware issues, there are few differences, but the software issues are alarming at best. It seems that the software creators have not tested all of the compatibility issues as I continued to get audio engine errors and play back errors. After attempting to get technical support, I found out that my chipset was not supported y the software. If the digidesign website had been working properly, then I would have known to upgrade to Cubase 4 instead of wasting my time with this "give me your money, and I will give some junk". This product just does not seem to work with windows.

What a Headache

By Rusto

from California

I spent hours trying to decifer and navigate through the Digidesign support website which is a labryth of jibberish and dead ends. Talking with their support techs on the phone trying to find a solution to my H/W Buffer problems was to no avail. My computer far exceeded the requirements. Their support techs were useless after long wait times and a short window (30 days) of phone support avialability. I found the whole endevour to be very complicated. Not for beginners or anyone but very HIGHLY competant computer wizards. What a nightmare!

Small price, big results

By Steve

from Fredericksburg, VA

Without even looking at the help menu or manual, I was up and running within about a half hour. seems hard at first because all of the other programming ive done was "sony acid pro" and "music studio" real basic and low budget programs. this is in a league of its own, i especially love the effects plugins and how easy it is to edit any type of file you have to edit. At first i had a problem with the USB drivers but it wasnt DigiDesigns fault, my computer wasnt setup correctly, so if you read anything about people complaining this product is junk and doesnt work, they are wrong. this usb audio interface is built rock hard and seems very durable. just make sure your computer has 4gb of ram before using, or you might get slow results...my mbox 2 is now 2 weeks old here...and i dont regret buying it at all

Very difficult

By S

from Springfield VA

I bought this product, and returned it. To be fair, what it seems to offer for the price is impressive, but there is a lot they don't tell you. Even though many people seem to be using PCs, apparently, Mac is the only way to go with this stuff. My computer kept crashing both during install and when trying to run the program. You need a secondary hard drive in order to properly use the program, but if it is external, they only recommend firewire drives, not USB. When the computer did not crash, I would get wierd error messages about time sync. From the message boards, I never saw anyone come up with an answer to that problem. And when I set up to return it, I was told that there had been a lot of compatibility problems with Toshiba laptops. Mind you, the specs on my computer far exceed what the mbox and protools require. Bottom line, this became way too difficult, and I could never get it to work. If you can, you'll probably love it.

Cannot be Beat

By Wen

from Queens, NY

I've Purchased this product not to long ago, have not run in to any problems at all thus far, plugs in my monitors perfectly, my mic, and the protools Le that comes with it, for a price like this no other interface can compare, i have not sensed any latency yet, the only issue i ran in to, was installing the drivers and such, other then that the Mbox mini is the best thing to hit the Pro recording era

For beginner recording

By Collin

from Buffalo

This was the very first interface I bought and I was very pleased with it, mostly because I would never record anything needing more than one mic, but after I bought a drumset, this mbox began to look more and more lame. So instead of buying this as your first interface, skip directly to the mbox 2 pro or any other interface with atLEAST 2 xlr inputs. Also, the ignition pack isn't all too good. While the Pro Tools LE software is okay, it's out of date and the plug-ins are useless, IMO.

M Box 2 Powerfull But Lacks In Some Areas

By Jesse B Dawg

from Spokane W.A.

The product works wonderfull execpt for one little problem.Anytime your pc has been running for an extended amount of time the included "Pro Tools" Software prompts you to increase buffer size.Which is fine but when you increase your buffer size you also increase latency,so if you are running buffer at 512 latency is their with little or no notice but if the system "Glitches"as I call it.And calls for the higher buffer you are forced to use like 1000 or around that area or even 2000 which is horrible you can barely talk while in 2000 samples a second! What i Have learned is use around 256 to %12 for recording and the higher buffer while mastering(when all recording finish).I find that this method barely ever gives me the "Increase Hardware Buffer Size" Error.....But It still does happen every once in awhil. I have searched the internet for hours trying to get a solution for this problem and multiple people have the same problem but no one has an answer! Not Even DigiDesign when contacted the questioned if my computer was up to job...which it is well capable of running proto

More than i could have asked for.

By Aaron

from Belle Plaine, Minnesota

Like the title says, more than i could have asked for. after installing pro tools, i was in over my head with what it all was, with all the plug-ins, virtual instruments, etc. after a god while, its rather easy to understand. if your looking to make simple beats to some fast techno, or in a band and looking to record a demo, this is the thing to get. although the 2 inputs can get kind of limiting, it gets the job done recording drums. as for the speaker set up, there really is no need to buy expensive studio monitors. simple buy a headphone to instrument cable adaptor, a good pair of computer speakers, and plug it all into the front headphone jack. of course though, this wouldnt be as good as studio monitors. all in all, if you want to get into creating your own music, this is a great way to start. its kind of like "Garage Band" on steroids. i recomend for any level musician.
