Overview

The DigiTech Bad Monkey Tube Overdrive Pedal gives your amp a boost right where you need it, sending your signal from clean to smooth, classic overdrive with character and dynamics. Low and High tone controls give you the flexibility to boost or cut the bass and treble frequencies for just the right sound. The Level knob boosts the output level of your signal, and the Gain knob controls the level of overdrive distortion. The Amp output runs into the input of your amplifier and the dedicated Mixer output has a cabinet emulation circuit that lets you run direct into a mixer or recorder when you don't want to lug your amp along.

I've only owned this pedal for about two weeks now, and it has earned a permanent spot on my pedalboard. I have a couple of great distortion pedals, but none of them could get me the type of sound that has a little dirt and sustain without sacrificing the detail of the notes, especially when playing chords or shuffles. This baby does it!! It has a great overdrive sound, and is one of the least expensive pedals on the market. It's well built and works well with the other pedals in my arsenal. I haven't tried the speaker sim output direct to a board yet, but I'm anxious to try it. It's a keeper!!

1st off,The Bad Monkey isn't a terrible OD, but it is certainly lacking. I've had one for years, I keep as a spare. The Bad: not very loud - 12:00 is unity volume, not leaving much left to goose the front end. 2nd - the OD tone sounds thin & digital, like the OD model on a budget multi FX processor(Zoom). It sucks tone pretty bad when it's off. Not a great "plug into the clean channel" OD. The good:The bass/treble controls make finding a usable setting easy - very useful if your amp/pedals are set specifically. Works best boosting what's already dirty. This is esentially a beginners (or backup) pedal, and a great jumping off point for future classic rockers to start to find out how to get that tone out of their head, but ultimately, it doesn't compare to something like an OCD or pork loin. Thanks

Good beginners/back up OD

By Nick Bracale

from Apopka Fl

It gets 5 stars for price, 3 for sound. To me it sounds pretty boxy & digital - like an OD setting on multieffect. It doesn't color your tone, but it does make it feel sterile. I've used it both as a boost in front of other pedals, and on it's own in front of a clean amp. I wouldn't gig with it as my primary OD, but I would keep it handy as a back up. In my humble opinion, the Boss SD-1 is still the best sounding, budget(<$100)OD out there, much more organic than the Digitech. Support Local Music

Awesome

This thing is awesome. It colors your tone without destroying it. Its very good at giving you that boost to make your amp go from bluesy overdrive to hard or classic rock anthem gain. Best pedal i have ever had.

Tone doctor

By Lucilma Negron

from California

Ifyouamo is lacking some ball and tone, like my amp, I highly recommend. I have used this pedal for years and it still has not failed me. I bring this around to many Amps and still have my same tone. Only problem I had was the battery plug was to short so it broke but was a quick fix

Very nice.

By frank ieraci

Price is right. Solidly Built. Easy to get to the battery once you figure out you can use the tip of a guitar jack to easily depress one of the retaining/pivot posts of the footswitch to release it (batt is underneath). Intuitive controls. Bright light to show it's ON.Easy to adjust. Great sound! Wide range. The one and only caveat I can see is: When changing the battery you see the actual switch to engage the effect is a microswitch on the motherboard, not a more conventional "stomp box" cylindrical steel button mechanism. You don't get that definite hard mechanical "CLICK" as with the more familiar steel button switch. It's a much softer feel when engaging it. But in that respect you don't feel as if the box is going to twist over under your ankle when you engage it either. You hit the steel button on an MXR, or similar, a little sideways and you know what I'm talking about. The foot pedal is roomy and sturdy despite the small overall size of the unit. The thing seems plenty sturdy, and I feel should hold up fine.

Great Tube Overdrive Pedal

By Joe W.

from Brunswick, NJ

I cannot sit here and dazzle you with technical specifications, nor can I compare this product to dozens of others. I can tell you, however, that this pedal has been worth every penny for me. I also own a Ibanez TS808 Tubescreamer. I play a lot of metal rhythm; with that said, the Monkey also does wonders with my limited lead playing. For distorted rhythm, the Bad Monkey is my tube pedal of choice. The Low and High knobs let me dial in that extra bit of punch on the low end, so muted pedal-tones sound harder and tighter. I'm using a custom distortion on a Digitech RP255 processor, and the Monkey takes it to that final level. When I record harmonized or melodic riffs, arpeggios, etc. over the straight rhythm, the tone is perfect. A few quick adjustments to the Gain can dirty the tone even more, or clean it up nicely for the rare times when I need to lead. I'm partial to the color green, so I love the color of the pedal. It is sturdy and grips well when on the floor. It has two Outputs; one is designated "Mixer" and the other is designated "Amp." I run it through my processor for power so batteries are not an issue. We all know that the Tubescreamer is a tried and true pedal, used by players all over the world. I own one and love it, and I thought I was done with Tube Overdrive pedals. But the Bad Monkey is a pedal worthy of mention in the tube pedal conversation. Try one out and you'll be pleasantly surprised at its versatility, affordability, and quality.

A friend gave me a bad monkey pedal and Im amazed. Very natural/rich sounding OD pedal. Produces a very warm OD sound. I can nail country/blues tones. Paired up with my incredible lil Fender 25R.. its a great combo. Dont be scared off by the Digitech name.. its a great pedal.

Good pedal for the price

By G.

from St. Louis, MO

I really like using this pedal for giving my tubes that extra oomph while on overdrive. The Bad Monkey is definitely a good tube-screamer-like pedal with a modest price. Whether it's my 7-string or my Les Paul, the Bad Monkey definitely does the job.

Love it!

By Logan

from Los Angeles, California

This is simply one of the best overdrive/distortion pedals I've played. I've played through everything from a Keeley TS9 to a Way Huge Pork Loin/Fat Sandwich to a Zvex Box of Rock. This cheap little seasick green stomp is the best drive I've played. It's incredibly versatile with the low and high EQ controls. Right now it's the only drive on my pedalboard and I play nearly everything. If you are scared of the price or don't want to be embarrased to have such a cheap pedal, buy it and I guarantee you will not regret it.
