Overview

The DiMarzio PAF DP103 humbucker pickup has a smooth, almost voice-like quality and that intangible swell to the notes after attack. It possesses vintage output and breathes freely with an open, warm character. Played flat-out through a non-master volume tube amp, the 36th anniversary PAF recreates the deep character of the great plug-in, turn-up and wail school of tone. Modern potting techniques and tight, consistent winding eliminates squeal and microphonics common to the original guitar pickups.

Great Pickup!

By Adam

from Frederick, MD

Comments about DiMarzio PAF DP103 Humbucker 36th Anniversary Guitar Pickup:

I am really pleased how well this pickup has added a whole new flavor to my Gibson SG! Before adding the DP103, the pickup was very dead and rather muddy--not great for solo work. But now, I have all kinds of tone on demand, and an entirely new richness with my neck pickup. If you're looking for a vintage-sounding pickup with modern levels of volume and tone, you can;t go wrong with the DP103!

BEST PAF OUT THERE

Comments about DiMarzio PAF DP103 Humbucker 36th Anniversary Guitar Pickup:

I had these pups in an LTD EC-401VF and just loved them. I recently picked up an SG Melody Maker and the 491T ceramic pickup sounded way too harsh and brittle, lacked bass, etc. First thing I did was drop a DP103 in and it really warmed up the highs and boosted / clarified the lows, exactly what Dimarzio says it will do. This is THE perfect pickup for a naturally bright guitar. For instance, my SG has an all maple body and a baked maple fretboard. Paired with a naturally bright pickup it's just too much but NOW it's absolutely perfect. I didn't lose any clarity or bite, I only removed the shrillness and gained the girth it was missing. If I had to compare to other pickups I've owned, I'd say the DP103 is most similar to the 57 Classic.

DiMarzio PAF DP103 Humbucker 36th Anniversary

By Kevin

from Sacramento Ca.

Comments about DiMarzio PAF DP103 Humbucker 36th Anniversary Guitar Pickup:

Bought a brand new 2004 Heritage Black Beauty Les Paul from Kalamazoo with HRW pickups. Between the overwound brightness of the HRW's and the ebony fingerboard, this guitar would not warm up. Ive had countless pickups in it over the years. I replaced the neck pickup once again about a year ago with the DP 103. My Gosh! I now have a Les Paul equivalent to the sound of my first 1973 Gibson black beauty! Thats what I was looking for in the first place. Still love the sound and Im well past the honeymoon period. They are as great sounding clean as they are overdriven, open, vocal, and articulate. The guitar is also wired like the 50's Les Paul's with independent controls FWIW. If you want your Les Paul to be more like a Les Paul or simply want more Les Paul out of your Les Paul, this is perfect for the neck position.

Vintage Tone meets High Def. Clarity

By Garrett Redman

from Winter Park, FL

Comments about DiMarzio PAF DP103 Humbucker 36th Anniversary Guitar Pickup:

Bought them as a pair to replace pickups in a LP style body. In the bridge, it's got a wonderful balance between smooth round tone and bite. In the neck, it's like a Duncan '59 on steroids, rolling back the Vol knob opens up a broad spectrum of tones, without the signal loss that you often find with doing so. Really great stuff.

Comments about DiMarzio PAF DP103 Humbucker 36th Anniversary Guitar Pickup:

I have Les Paul style body that had very bad sounding pickups. I replaced the neck pup with the DP 103. I now have a Les Paul equivalent sound in a guitar that cost significantly less! I do actually have a Les Paul Standard that I a/b'd this with. It really was as good as the real thing. The DP103 lacks some of the low end that the stock Gibson pups or the Duncan 59. It is closer to a Duncan Jazz with more mids and tighter low end. It has a great clean sound as well as distorted sound. It is very articulate, great note separation! I wasn't sure if I like it as first as I tend to buy Duncan pups. After playing with it for a few days i got used to the sound and EQ'd the amp a bit differently...made all the difference for me. I would definitely buy it again. This is fantastic for the neck position.

Comments about DiMarzio PAF DP103 Humbucker 36th Anniversary Guitar Pickup:

Took out an Epiphone HB measuring 10.7K in a hollow-bodied jazz box. These types of guitars have less sustain than a solid body or semi-solid. The Epi pickup actually sounded great for jazz but little drive for blues. The DiMarzio sounds better, which it should, with more drive and sustain. I like it a lot. Highs are PAF-like and after 50 years of this stuff, I do know what a PAF sounds like. In this application, I have to roll down the bass on the amp but when I do, it sounds great. Cannot comment on how it'll be in your typical rock guitar but for Chicago-style blues, it's very good. Jazz boxes will feedback easily so I've not yet tested it on stage. Here's the odd part: it's considerably hotter than the Epihone but measures a normal 7.3Kohms. One would expect closer measurements or even lower resistance with the Epi since the DiMarzio is sooo much louder than the old pickup. Shows how a single spec tells you nothing. No substitute for listening. Recommended!
