Best Budget Adjustable Pickups

By David Gammon

from Terre Haute, IN

Look around. You will not find hardly ANY bass pickups that have individual adjustments like these. I have owned over 8 basses over the years and several of them had 1 string that had a lower volume for some reason or other. If it is your 2nd or 3rd string... you're usually out of luck trying to even it out with the other strings. Buy these and you'll always have equal volume on all 4 strings. The bonus is the punchier sound they have. Unless you buy an expensive bass, you will probably have average pickups. The only downside I found is that these are slightly smaller than 'some' P-bass pickups, so 1 screw will not hit the old hole. I have never replaced a pickup before, but easily got it installed. These will definitely make a cheap bass sound MUCH better.

increased power, decreased tone

By Johnny Lee

from NJ

I have a P/J setup with Dimarzio Model P and Model J pickups. The Model P is a loud pickup and overpowers the J by a lot. So, if you're looking for increased output from a nicely priced passive pickup, the Model P has it. I like the blacked out look and adjustable pole pieces. However, it sacrifices a lot of woody growling tone. Same with the Model J. I also don't like the P-J imbalance. So, Model P and J are punchy replacements, but I'm planning to swap them both out for more vintage flavored pickups (single coil for the J).

Great tone, great value

By Brad Garrett

from Bend, OR

I have a 2008 MIA Fender P-Bass. I was happy enough with the sound, but I was doing a little tone chasing and decided to try these, given the low price and good reviews. The install went well, but I noticed that they did not line up exactly with the old screw holes, but they were close enough to work(YMMV). You will have to do a bit of soldering, so I recommend that if you are not already proficient at that skill, go online for at least a quick tutorial. The pickups have a nice, warm tone with plenty of punch that will suit just about any playing style and I don't think that you will be disappointed. I am, however, a firm believer that about 90% of your sound is in your hands, so don't expect a dramatic difference.

Awesome

By Natalie Kahan

from Arlington! Texas

These pick ups are awesome. Added a lot of growl and umps to mu tone. I play high gain grind/powerviolence and these do the trick!

Good retrofit!

By Werewolf67

from Palm Bay FL

I installed a set of these in a Johnston by AXL P-copy, and they brought it to life! More punch, and more dynamic! Next project is the combined J+P set for my backup GRS190.

Nice replacement

By Bassman Al

from Maryland

I installed these in my '73 P-bass. Adds new elements while keeping the old style and feel of the original stocks. Added elements include more punch, growl, greater sensitivity. I had to turn down the "presence" and "drive" as well as "bass" on my Sansamp BDDI because these pups had more oomph than the stocks.
