Overview

The Gravity Storm Steve Vai Signature Neck and Bridge Pickups are the next step in Steve Vai's pickup evolution. Steve used to describe pickup sounds in terms of specific frequency responses. Now he describes them as flavor and texture. The flavor of The Gravity Storm Neck model is sweet and warm, but the texture has an edge to it. It has the depth of a humbucker with some of the bite of a single-coil. Steve described the sound he wanted from his new Gravity Storm Bridge Model pickup as "a thundering cloud of ice cream." He didn't say what flavor he likes, but this one has both bite and sweetness.

Most neck humbuckers don't do a great job at reproducing pick harmonics, especially if they have a warm sound. This one's different, particularly with 24-fret guitars. The combination of fat neck position tone with harmonics is something most haven't often encountered before. It has a throaty quality that sounds like a cross between a humbucker and a single-coil.

A high-impact pickup doesn't need a tremendous output level to make its point. Where the Evolution Bridge Model is about power and sharp-edged tone, the Gravity Storm is more about depth and warm highs and mids. It's very much a plug 'n play pickup - it doesn't require a lot of tweaking to get a great sound. Because the highs are very fat, it's possible to increase treble response on your amp without losing tone and sustain on the high frets.

Comments about DiMarzio Gravity Storm Steve Vai Signature Pickup:

Threw a neck and bridge gravity storm in my Ibanez S570dxqm. Great improvement over stock pickups! Its a mix between single coil sweetness and humbucker growl. Great response and very dynamic when you roll the volume off. Outstanding replacement, get you some!

Replaced the stock pickup in a Charvel Fusion. Added clarity, output and warmth as advertised. Would probably sound great in most of my guitars.

Comments about DiMarzio Gravity Storm Steve Vai Signature Pickup:

I have used Active pickups and many passive pickups. After sifting through and doing sound research I came across the gravity storm pickups. This pickup has stratty tones along with les paul tones. I had both neck and bridge installed into an RG420RW (Rosewood topped mohagany body with a rosewood fretboard and maple neck. Just for the tonewood fans ;).)

        Neck:
The cleans jangle and quack when you pull the volume down there is still a tone of high end that is not displayed on the dimarzio website. Thanks to the Ceramic magnet. The pickups have alot of output and create a liquidy lead sound on gain settings.

In a Parallele connected setting sounds like a very fat single coil. I have produced a ver Greg howe esque lead tone with these pickups by just changing a few settings.

If you decide to use your tone knob you can dial back these highs and get a standard humbucker tone with aded clarity. there is a lot of midrange in this pickup so it will cut through the mix without ever getting muddy keeping its full harmonic response.

(Just for giggles I raised the pickup to get it the closes I could to the strings 3mm-4mm and they still stayed clear and gave me enough output to push some serious air. While maintaining an intense harmonic response.)

Playing with the volume and tone transforms this pickup into what ever you need it to be. Stratty or fat (LP) it has all the warmth for blues and jazz and can also be EQ'd for this easily at max settings.

        Bridge:
The bridge uses Alnico 5 magnets and is wound hot. It compliments the neck very well. it gives me clear palmutes and single not melodies/rhythms. It is very sweet sounding and articulate maintaing all of the qualities of the neck with the added edge of being close to the bridge for higher frequency overtones. Especially when parallel connected.

Playing with the volume and tone transforms this pickup into what ever you need it to be. Stratty or fat (LP) it has all the warmth for blues and jazz and can also be EQ'd for this easily at max settings.

        Over all

This is a high quality pickup with versatility and can meet the needs of any demanding musician needing clarity and performance. This pickup would also be good for any hobbyist symphony or cacophony of wankery. This pickup would also fit most metal applications too. This pickup is great for jazz fusion as well along with blues, Blue grass, Country and jazz.

Even when added to a relatively cheap guitar it will increase the tonality of your instrument exponentially.
Comparable to a high level crafted instrument. This is everything a pickup should be and I havent even adjusted the pole pieces! this is definiteley a gravity storm in the after market pickup arena sonically. This is the best pickup. Home RUN!

Comments about DiMarzio Gravity Storm Steve Vai Signature Pickup:

These pickups are probably my favorite DiMarzio pickups. They have this really punchy sound. Tight accurate bass. Treble tones are just absolutely awesome. You combine the Gravity Story neck and bridge combo, you've got a massive sound. True to the Vai sound, similar to the Steve's Special, it has just a raging tone that has it's own definition of "The Brown Sound" Totally shred worthy pickup. I have them in a Jackson soloist. It' opened up so many things I can now play. Best thing I did for a massive tone upgrade.

Comments about DiMarzio Gravity Storm Steve Vai Signature Pickup:

I have been doing my own work on all my guitars since '78 and this BY FAR, is one of the best pickups I have come across. After reading reviews about it, I was intrigued. I bought it for my PRS Custom 22 and WOW !!! Lives up to all the hype and reviews. It was described a fat in tone, which to me was a little vague, but after getting it, installing it.. WOW, FAT it is. Great smooth highs, thick in the midrange, and great low end !!! Not a real hot pickup, but after all the pickups I have gone through, and still have in my storage, a hot pickup isn't always the answer. They get too muddy, no articulation, usually with a high end that is harsh, in my humble opinion.I immediately fell in love with the tone. A few minor adjustments to the pickup and to attain string to string balance and SHAZAM !!! GREAT SUSTAIN.... I held note after note, at bedroom levels, and they all held on and went into that sweet feedback!!! I would DEFINATELY RECOMMEND THIS PICKUP. Great for hard rock, classic rock, country even, as it is very articulate and cleans up nicely when the guitar's volume is turned down. YOU WONT BE DISAPPOINTED !!!

Comments about DiMarzio Gravity Storm Steve Vai Signature Pickup:

I have finally found the exact sound ive been looking for. A very warm pickup that some how retains clarity even on the low strings. exactly how dimarzio describes it, in between a single coil and a humbucker almost gives you a hot paf vibe with more clarity. I had the paf joe in my jem and it was a great pickup super clear but just a little too thin and my 5150iii is already a little bright so I put the gravity storm in and it warmed it up nicely. Shredders will love this as well as bluesy rock players because of the combination of warmth and definition. ive had every vai pickup and almost every dimarzio and its my favorite neck pickup.

Comments about DiMarzio Gravity Storm Steve Vai Signature Pickup:

Great in the bridge for a bright or thin sounding guitar, especially a 25.5 scale with Floating Trem. If you are used to a hot pickup, it will take some getting used to, or a boost pedal for leads. It's a thick, warm, musical, growling, satisfying, clear pickup, but in a two guitar, drop tuned, fast picking metal band, it didn't cut through the mix quite as well as my ceramic pups.

Comments about DiMarzio Gravity Storm Steve Vai Signature Pickup:

Like the player who developed it, Steve Vai, this one's a bit of an enigma. It's got a nice, fat midrange that works in most settings. Think of this as the ultimate Steve Vai pickup, as it has the tonal qualities of the Evolution, the midrange of the EVO2, and the vintage warmth of the Breed. I wish it were a touch hotter, though it does cut through the mix. If you have a problem guitar, I can see this being an easy fix for the lead position.

Comments about DiMarzio Gravity Storm Steve Vai Signature Pickup:

I am one of those people who believe that our sound is in our heads and then our fingers make it happen. Some pick ups make it easier to get the sound that we hear in our heads. that would be the gravity Storms. I had Evos in my JEM and then a Cruch Lab later in the neck position. I could get my sound with some tweaking. Then I tried a set of the Gravity Storms and they just blew me away. they were just so responsive! Simply effortless to go from what I hear to making it happen. Don't get me wrong...I like the Evos and crunch Lab and would still use them had I not tried these guys. Our sound engineer noticed the difference right away and this was under less than deal conditions. he said "It was like you were channeling someone. What ever sound you wanted just happened and every little nuance just jumped right out." he is a guitar player and will no doubt own the second set of gravity Storms in town.
