Overview

The Gravity Storm Steve Vai Signature Neck and Bridge Pickups are the next step in Steve Vai's pickup evolution. Steve used to describe pickup sounds in terms of specific frequency responses. Now he describes them as flavor and texture. The flavor of The Gravity Storm Neck model is sweet and warm, but the texture has an edge to it. It has the depth of a humbucker with some of the bite of a single-coil. Steve described the sound he wanted from his new Gravity Storm Bridge Model pickup as "a thundering cloud of ice cream." He didn't say what flavor he likes, but this one has both bite and sweetness.

Most neck humbuckers don't do a great job at reproducing pick harmonics, especially if they have a warm sound. This one's different, particularly with 24-fret guitars. The combination of fat neck position tone with harmonics is something most haven't often encountered before. It has a throaty quality that sounds like a cross between a humbucker and a single-coil.

A high-impact pickup doesn't need a tremendous output level to make its point. Where the Evolution Bridge Model is about power and sharp-edged tone, the Gravity Storm is more about depth and warm highs and mids. It's very much a plug 'n play pickup - it doesn't require a lot of tweaking to get a great sound. Because the highs are very fat, it's possible to increase treble response on your amp without losing tone and sustain on the high frets.

Comments about DiMarzio Gravity Storm Steve Vai Signature Pickup:

I have used Active pickups and many passive pickups. After sifting through and doing sound research I came across the gravity storm pickups. This pickup has stratty tones along with les paul tones. I had both neck and bridge installed into an RG420RW (Rosewood topped mohagany body with a rosewood fretboard and maple neck. Just for the tonewood fans ;).)

    Neck:
The cleans jangle and quack when you pull the volume down there is still a tone of high end that is not displayed on the dimarzio website. Thanks to the Ceramic magnet. The pickups have alot of output and create a liquidy lead sound on gain settings.

In a Parallele connected setting sounds like a very fat single coil. I have produced a ver Greg howe esque lead tone with these pickups by just changing a few settings.

If you decide to use your tone knob you can dial back these highs and get a standard humbucker tone with aded clarity. there is a lot of midrange in this pickup so it will cut through the mix without ever getting muddy keeping its full harmonic response.

(Just for giggles I raised the pickup to get it the closes I could to the strings 3mm-4mm and they still stayed clear and gave me enough output to push some serious air. While maintaining an intense harmonic response.)

Playing with the volume and tone transforms this pickup into what ever you need it to be. Stratty or fat (LP) it has all the warmth for blues and jazz and can also be EQ'd for this easily at max settings.

    Bridge:
The bridge uses Alnico 5 magnets and is wound hot. It compliments the neck very well. it gives me clear palmutes and single not melodies/rhythms. It is very sweet sounding and articulate maintaing all of the qualities of the neck with the added edge of being close to the bridge for higher frequency overtones. Especially when parallel connected.

Playing with the volume and tone transforms this pickup into what ever you need it to be. Stratty or fat (LP) it has all the warmth for blues and jazz and can also be EQ'd for this easily at max settings.

    Over all

This is a high quality pickup with versatility and can meet the needs of any demanding musician needing clarity and performance. This pickup would also be good for any hobbyist symphony or cacophony of wankery. This pickup would also fit most metal applications too. This pickup is great for jazz fusion as well along with blues, Blue grass, Country and jazz.

Even when added to a relatively cheap guitar it will increase the tonality of your instrument exponentially.
Comparable to a high level crafted instrument. This is everything a pickup should be and I havent even adjusted the pole pieces! this is definiteley a gravity storm in the after market pickup arena sonically. This is the best pickup. Home RUN!

Thundering Cloud of Ice Cream-Smooth and Creamy, Very Dreamy!!!

    By Michael Crespin

    from Las Cruces, NM

Comments about DiMarzio Gravity Storm Steve Vai Signature Pickup:

When I read that this pickup was coming out and the explanation of the sound as described by the man Steve Vai himself and what DiMarzio has to say, I had to get a hold of one. I have been using Evos, Evo IIs, and the Breed pickups pretty much exclusively and have loved the tones that these produce, now I am floored by the sound of the Gravity Storm!!! I absolutely love this pickup and I have to say, I do not think I have ever played through a pickup that I love as much as the Gravity Storm. It has a wonderful warm sound that reminds me of vintage PAFs from the old Les Pauls but they have an edge that produces awesome articulation where every single note and nuance can be heard. When playing very fast with both picking and legato lines, every single note is amazingly crystal clear! There is not a single note that is missed. This pickup, without having to crank up the gain, sings beautifully, and with the gain cranked does not get muddy or become overly distorted. When playing rhythm, the notes are distinguished and the overtones do not bleed into each other, even when the distortion is at haigh levels. I absolutely love this pickup...the best I have ever heard!!! I highly recommend the Gravity Storm to anyone who is thinking about buying it!!!
