The Ionizer 8 Neck, Middle & Bridge Model pickups were designed for Tosin Abasi. When DiMarzio asked Tosin to describe what he wants in a bridge pickup, he said it's all about the mids. 8-string guitars have extended high- and low-end response, and it˜s the mids that need to power the bridge position so the sound doesn't wash out. It's also good to have enough output to overdrive an amp without making the sound muddy, and enough headroom to clean up when the volume is rolled down.

Recommended for bridge position.

Tech Talk
The long scale length of an 8-string guitar can make the sound of the plain strings brittle, but the Ionizer 8 Bridge Model has a low resonant peak that warms them up, and the high "E" doesn't sound thin, even at the upper frets.

A more versatile 8 string pickup option

By Wayne

from Culpeper, VA

Comments about DiMarzio DP811 Ionizer 8-String Bridge Humbucker Pickup:

I purchased this pickup to replace the stock bridge pickup in my Ibanez RG8 (great guitar by the way). I wanted more versatile tone options and more of a traditional guitar sound (rather than just djent metal and bass-like tones) from my 8 string and this pickup nails it. 4 wires for coil tapping and it has a nice, traditional single coil tone when split. It is much cleaner sounding and has more warmth but still retains good treble response and harmonics. Distorted, it sounds good and retains much more clarity between strings than the stock pickups. But if you're looking for a hard core metal sound, this isn't it. I recommend listening to Tosin Abasi on the recent Animals As Leaders album as your point of reference for how this pickup sounds in metal applications. The description of this pickup on DiMarzio's web site is highly accurate, I recommend you read it before buying. A couple of minor negatives - The backplate of the pickup is a plastic composite material so if you're mounting this directly to the body like I had to, you have to drill out the mounting holes. Be careful, it can crack easily!(a drill bit for this is included with the pickup)Another issue I had was that the springs provided were too tall for my application. I could not compress them enough to start the screws into the body. I ended up pulling the foam and screw mounts off of the stock RG8 pickups and putting them on this pickup, which worked great and is a better mounting solution anyway. (Hey DiMarzio take a hint from Ibanez on this one)Overall I'm very happy with this pickup. It's very well built, low noise and sounds exactly as advertised.
