Overview

One thing has stayed consistent throughout Dream Theater guitarist John Petrucci's long and successful career: the DiMarzio pickups in his guitars. John has been pushing the envelope of progressive metal since the late eighties, and the DiMarzio Crunch Lab 7 Neck Guitar Pickup ensued from DiMarzio's most recent collaboration with John. He used this pickup throughout Dream Theater's tenth studio album, Black Clouds & Silver Linings. John swears this is the best live and studio sound he's ever had, and the name says it all-"crunch" is what it's all about with a big, tight sound that's neither muddy nor thin.

The DiMarzio Crunch Lab 7 is noteworthy for what it doesn't do-it's not a screamer and it's not about thundering lows. Its physical appearance is identical to DiMarzio's D Sonic 7, but the internal design is a lot different in that it's louder and the highs have more depth. The lows and mids are more open, which this is crucial for playing chords with body and presence through a gained-out amp. The way the replacement pickup attacks a note is both sharper and stronger, and this allows the Crunch Lab 7 to be installed with the solid bar facing towards the neck.

Recommended for bridge position.

Excellent bridge pickup

Comments about DiMarzio DP708 Crunch Lab 7-String - Bridge Pickup:

I just installed this into a Ibanez RG Made in Japan Guitar in the bridge position with the bar towards the neck and sounds nice. The only problem I have is when playing clean sounds,it adds some distorsion by itself, but it is easily solved by using a split coil position (I have a 5 way selector, position 4 would do the trick) or by using another cleaner pickup in the neck. Liquifire7 is a nice match for this.

Awesome pickup!

Comments about DiMarzio DP708 Crunch Lab 7-String - Bridge Pickup:

I just recently replaced this pickup with the stock pickup from my Ibanez RGD7321 and it has a lot more range than the Ibanez stock pickup. I put the rail towards the bridge so I can get more of a high end kind of tone and it just blows away the stock pickups. Not muddy at all, and has a really djent-like tone.

Best Bridge Pickup EVER1

By Truelink

from Atlanta, GA

Comments about DiMarzio DP708 Crunch Lab 7-String - Bridge Pickup:

This pickup was designed specifically to be used in the bridge position with an overdriven amp, and my goodness it does its job well! Some bridge pickups can be really tight and will give you a really good tone for playing single note riffs, but when you go to play rhythm, all the chords sound really confined and held back. This pickup gives you the right amount of tightness so that it sounds really well with single note riffs, but the chords sound very open and full. When playing something in the higher portions of the neck, it gives the right amount of attack to give it character, without making it sound ugly. The harmonics on this pickup are very good, very clear, lots of sustain, and you can do pinch harmonics like a breeze. This pickup really allows you to express what yourself, and responds very well to how your playing. It also adds more low end "crunch" so to say on the seventh string. It sounds just like the sixth string. This pickup is just amazing, your chords are so full and sweet, melodic lines have lots of character, harmonics are screamin, and it has very good sustain. I would reccomend this pickup to anybody. Having said that, GO BUY IT NOW!!!!
