Overview

The basic characteristics of the 6-string Evolution bridge model sound like a perfect description for the 7-string DiMarzio DP704 lead pickup: power, attack and presence. Combining the basic Evolution design with Virtual Vintage technology results in a 7-string pickup possessing crunching lows and intense highs. The output voltage of the Evolution 7 is concentrated towards the upper mids and treble, so there's a lot of cutting power, and the low end stays hot and clear.

Recommended For: Bridge position.

Tech Talk: Making a 7-string version of a pre-existing 6-string pickup is not a simple matter of copying specs. Particularly with a high-output pickup, it's important that the low B string doesn't get muddy sounding. DiMarzio made the Evolution 7's coils brighter sounding than the 6-string version to make sure this doesn't happen, then used some of the same technology that went into the Virtual Vintage design to warm up the sound of the high strings without affecting the low B. The bass strings have a lot of clean power and the high strings cut through without sounding thin.

The evolution 7-string pickup is just what I needed to bring my Ibanez S7420 back to life. This pickup has an amazing amount of output and compliments the paf I have in the neck perfectly. Between the paf and evo-7 with a 5 way switch I have everything from shimmering to crunch in the clean channel of my Dual Recto. There is amazing definition in every note played from this pup and it is harmonically rich. This really tightened up the low B on my 7-string as well.

This pickup may be great for others, but I considered it a hurdle in getting "my" sound.
It's just not the pup for me.
I bought this because certain individuals on forums and reviews said it is good for metal. Maybe they were talking about old school thrash instead of the newer sounds that I play because this pickup simply doesn't have the percussive bottom end required for breakdowns or palm mutes.
I am running a Boss SD-1 as a boost into a Rivera K-Tre. The pickup is in a Jackson SLAT-7 alder body. Even with the boost dimed out, the bottom strings were round and loose sounding. Warm sounding, even.
I did quite like the clarity and treble of the higher strings as I play weird mathcore chords.
I can't say if this would be a good pickup for any other styles, because I strictly play modern metal. It may be perfect for pseudo jazz/prog stuff or blues.
The pickup seems stout. I really wish they would include self tapping screws because if you have to modify your guitar to accomodate a passive, the existing screw holes may not line up with your previous pickup and you have to make new holes.
This is the best part. DiMarzio has a 30 day guarantee where if you don't like the pickup, you can get a refund. They are resonably priced, too.

Comments about DiMarzio DP704 Evolution 7-String Pickup:

With any pickup, a recommendation is difficult, as everyone hears their own ideal tone a little differently.

This pickup has tons of mid range clarity. I've used it in both the bridge position and the neck position. I prefer it in the neck position, but you'll need either individual volume controls for each pickup or something very powerful in the bridge to balance it if you choose to do so.

In the bridge position, I installed the pickup in an Ibanez with a basswood body. The sound was very clear and bright, but to me, it didn't sound quite like the 6 string Evolution Bridge model, because the EQ was quite noticeably different. I think it's honest to say that the pickup had the same sort of "spirit," though, of being a bright powerful pickup.

In the neck position, I installed the pickup into a Washburn with an Alder body. I wanted to avoid the bridge position, because I was afraid that the Alder/Evo7 combo would be too bright. I was astonished at the tone I got from the pickup. It was maybe a little too powerful for clean playing, unless the volume was rolled back quite a bit, but for screaming leads, it had some characteristics of the neck pickup sound, but still had a very rich harmonic content.

I would recommend this pickup for seven stringers looking for a bright and powerful sound.

    it was ok...

Comments about DiMarzio DP704 Evolution 7-String Pickup:

i put this pickup in my RG7321 and it was a mediocre pup. for the higher notes it had good sustain and it was pretty clear, but it was really noisy for me and notes would sometimes blend into each other. it wasn't clear or tight at all for the lower strings, even when i put thicker strings on. it didn't have that bite for the B, E or A strings. it added a nice tone to the basswood, but it just wasn't the pickup for me.

    AWESOME PICKUP!

Comments about DiMarzio DP704 Evolution 7-String Pickup:

I bought this to replace the Blaze II in the bridge position of my Ibanez Universe. I like the Blaze II neck, but the bridge was just too unfocused for me. I put the EVO 7 in and WOW, what a difference! The low end was tighter, the mids had more punch, and the high end was less shrill! This pickup is also a good choice if you want to REALLY hear yourself, because it's VERY unforgiving! A pickup that will make you want to practice more is good in my book!

What i liek about these pickups is that you can throw insain amounts of gain and distortion adn they well still retain clarity no matter what.

    Not Worth It

    By FromEllerbeGuitarist

    from Oil City, Louisiana

Comments about DiMarzio DP704 Evolution 7-String Pickup:

I bought these guitars because I liked Vai's high gain/clarity. I tried to adjust the height and the pickup fell back into the guitar. When I removed it I realized the screwholes were made of plastic...bad move when screws and springs are involved. They stripped out. Plus I had to modify the guitar to get the pickup to fit in the first place. It did clean up my sound, a slight improvement, but don't expect your guitar to sound amazing. I was really disappointed, and I HIGHLY doubt Vai really uses these pickups. Decent pickups, better than what I had, but they just aren't worth the trouble.

Add some life to your guitar

Comments about DiMarzio DP704 Evolution 7-String Pickup:

My J Custom 7 was sounding dull compared to my Jem. It just didn't have that punchy, scratchy tone I like. I have read that the stock pickup was similar to the Evo, so I thought the total lack of punch was from the mahogany body, and I was probably stuck with it. I put the DP704 in the bridge, and it lit right up. This pickup is HOT! Great highs, tight lows, blah blah blah. I love the pickup, and rated everything tops except features. It's a pickup - what features would it really have? Doesn't fly or anything... It does have 4 wires, so you can split it, which we've all come to expect from DiMarzio. Sounds good split, but BRIGHT, as you might expect. Also, I have an H-H pickup config, so no true strat-style tone anyway. Lots of pickup for the money. Not for the faint-of-heart.

    AMAZING PICKUP

    By WIKED1

    from BAY SHORE, NY

Comments about DiMarzio DP704 Evolution 7-String Pickup:

Again, an AMAZING PICKUP. For such a demanding musician, Steve Vai only uses the best, and this is the one. So, for the simple fact that this pickup was developed to tame Vai's thirst for the ultimate tone, I was sold. Both live and in the recording studio, it's just got an amazing sound. The power obtained with this pickup drowns everyone in the band out, and the harmonics make my guitar scream like a wild banshee. Hey, don't take my word for it. BUY IT, and see for yourself.
