Overview

What would a Tele bridge pickup sound like if it had the same EQ as a vintage PAF? If you're a Tele player and you think this is an interesting question, here's the answer: it's the DiMarzio DP421 Area Hot T Tele Bridge Pickup. Because it has the classic Tele 6-magnet configuration, it's not simply a PAF reduced to Tele size. The sound is more detailed and controlled. The plain strings both sing and sting, and the wound strings have a dynamic quality that's halfway between a humbucker and a P90.

The Area Hot T Bridge uses Alnico 2 magnets like other Area models, and works well with either 250K or 500K controls.

Recommended For: Standard Tele bridge position.

Tech Talk: Like the Area T, the Area Hot T Bridge has outstanding dynamic range, and it responds instantly to changes in pick attack and volume. It's also very sensitive to string distance. The volume is high when the pickup is close to the strings, but can be reduced by backing the Area T Bridge away. String pull is not a problem with the same Alnico 2 magnets that are standard on the Area T.

250K is the recommended control value, but higher values like 500K all around or a 250K volume and the 1 Megohm EP1202 can add some twang to the basic tone.

Comments about DiMarzio DP421 Area Hot T Tele Bridge Pickup:

The original on my '52 finally died. Replaced it with this model.
It gives more beef and a lot less icepick. Not as jangly as the original pickup.

Comments about DiMarzio DP421 Area Hot T Tele Bridge Pickup:

DiMarzio's description of this pickup - between a p90 and a PAF - is good. It's a pretty unique sound. The pickup is much more suited to overdriven and distorted tones than cleans. There is some dynamic range here, but don't expect single coil sounds. It's much more PAF than tele.

Comments about DiMarzio DP421 Area Hot T Tele Bridge Pickup:

This pickup does what I was looking for. It is hum-canceling and still sounds like a Tele bridge pickup but with a little more warmth, mids and output. It was a bit difficult to install in both my Vintage-style and Modern-style Tele bridges. The pickup is just very slightly wider at the top of the bobbin than other Tele bridge pups I have used, so I had to push and wiggle it to get it into the hole in the plate. But once in the bridge it has enough clearance that it adjusts fine. Because of this small issue and the fact that the hookup leads for hot and ground are hair thin, I'm rating a 4 instead of a 5. But overall, once installed, I am very happy with this pickup and would recommend to anyone who needs noiseless and is looking for a traditional Tele/Brodcaster bridge sound with a little more oomph and thickness.

Comments about DiMarzio DP421 Area Hot T Tele Bridge Pickup:

This thing was a breeze to install, and WOW it really does sound good. The output has increased a bit, which I wanted, but the tele tone is still there - with a slightly better EQ curve and less noise. It's just a good upgrade overall - super happy with this decision.

Comments about DiMarzio DP421 Area Hot T Tele Bridge Pickup:

I have always used Dimarzios and this pickup did not disappoint. The decription that it is between a P90 and PAF is accurate. It still has some bite and I rolled down the tone when using OD lead tone. It has its own voice and no hum.

I struggled playing my stock tele with my Marshall stack due to the thin, trebly sound. This upgrade maintained the character of the tele single coil sound while thickening up the midrange EQ and eliminating the buzz. Can't be happier with the results!

Comments about DiMarzio DP421 Area Hot T Tele Bridge Pickup:

I have a Fender Custom Shop Light Relic Tele, and as much I love the guitar and hate to modify it in terms of resale value, I bought it for the specs, feel, and to play it, not sit there and look at it. It suffers from the usual Fender tele pickup problems, whether they are 'vintage' types or not - mainly too bright, too thin, and too low output when moving around against humbuckers in Les Pauls, etc. Makes it difficult to dial in a variety of sounds if the instruments have absolutely nothing in common.

SO - I bit the bullet on this pickup, having had previous experience with Dimarzio's for many years, them being after all among the first in this aftermarket business in the late 70's. Always preferred them over the Duncan's - Duncan's never seem to sound like the guitar they are attached to - being too brittle and unbalanced sounding and lacking detail - very mass produced (to me).

With a sigh of relief, I find I really like this pickup. It does sound a little different than the stock, but in all the right ways if you want to use overdrive on the treble pickup. It is warm and focused, has great detail for purists, nice output without that spikey treble, and handles clean sounds as well as more agressive rock and blues sounds. It is absolutely noiseless, and does to me continue to transmit the 'Telecaster' character of my instrument, unlike the comments by a previous reviewer.

Comments about DiMarzio DP421 Area Hot T Tele Bridge Pickup:

My guitar is a US Northern Ash Body Maple Fingerboard standard Telecaster. This pickup is the perfect tone for classic rock and hard rock and it doesn't try to turn your Tele into something it's not. You get to keep all the Tele goodness but when overdriven the treble seems to smooth out and good sustain. I have tried the Chopper-T, Air Norton-T, and standard Area-T bridge but this is the one that gave me what I was looking for.

I was never a tele player cause of the high end that is just ice pik annoying! especialy the bridge p-up.Well after installing these on my tele bridge and hearing a big warm twang,I'm diggin it! and playing the tele more! It even surprise me how warm and pleasant it was during a live gig. The high end was never over the top,it was there but nice and warm. I highly recommend it specialy if your gonna be playing heavier rock tunes using a tele. Another big plus is,no single coil huuummm!!! Over all it has nice big warm low's and mids and a sweet tamed high end.
