Overview

The DiMarzio DP419 Area '67 is a hum canceling pickup that has the chime of '60s pickups, and its 2 and 4 positions are light, bright and quack-happy.

The Monterey Pop Festival of 1967 was a watershed event in American music. When it was over, the world had heard and felt the sound of a Strat in the hands of a master. Single-coil electric guitar pickups in 1967 were bright and very clean. And of course, they hummed. DiMarzio has captured this classic bright and clean sound but totally eliminated the hum with patented Area technology. They also reduced magnet pull by 40% for improved sustain and clarity.

Recommended For: All positions, especially neck and middle

Tech Talk: Strat pickups in the late 1960s used full-strength Alnico 5 magnets. The patented magnetic field of the Area models is more efficient and focused than it is on true single-coils, which allows DiMarzio to use Alnico 2 in the DP419 instead. There's much less magnet pull, but no loss of output. This is a major advantage in the neck and middle positions, where sustain and intonation can both suffer if the strings are exposed to strong magnetic fields. In the bridge position, the patented technology of the Area '67 pickup produces a sound that's very bright but not brittle.

Authentic, Noiseless, Vintage Tone

By Scott Donaldson

from CT

I installed two of these into the neck and middle of my Ibanez RG350DX and now I have a better sounding "Strat" than the two I owned in the past few years. Like others have said here, this pickup is completely noiseless, but also completely authentic in its tone. Before trying this, I had tried both a Seymour Duncan STK-4 and Seymour Duncan STK-7. Both were noiseless like I wanted, but neither had that true "single coil" tone like this Dimarzio. I guess I should explain myself after saying this Ibanez sounds more like a Strat than the two I had. One was a Mexican so the pickups were lower quality, and the other had the Fender Tex Mex pickups which are too hot to sound like vintage single coils. I'm sure if I still had either of those Fender Strats and replaced those pickups with these Dimarzio Area 67's, I'd be pretty happy with those guitars.

I got bright and woody!

By Jeff

from Huntington Beach, CA

Hands down my strat is now the best sounding strat I have ever heard. Spot on 60's vintage tone. The true glory of this pickup can best be defined by three things: First they are SILENT, 60 cycle hum is gone forever. Second, they are extremely touch sensitive and volume and tone control responsive. Most dynamic modern pick up I've installed. Third and most impressive is how the frequency response follows my hand. Bend a plain string, brilliant sharp and percussive. Trill through the wound strings and you'll be in a forest of wooly wood! If you're looking for Jimi there will be moments where you are...not necessarily stoned but... If you have a "parchment" pickgaurd the "aged white" are a perfect match. DiMarzio has color samples on their site as well. If you think you'll swap covers. You wont. These pickups are stacked high. GET A SET NOW!!!

great, bright pickup

By Polish John

from NY

Though these are recommended for the neck and middle positions, i put one of these bad boys into the bridge position on my maple necked 2004 AmStrat. Lemme tell you, just like the description says, it is BRIGHT but not brittle. Nice Hendrix tone. Hook it up to a tone knob, roll it back to about 6, and it evens out nicely, creating a tone comparable to an Area 61 or 58. Excellent pickup.
