Overview

Bass pickups are usually described with aggressive terms such as "amazing punch" and "thundering lows," but that's not the sound of vintage J Bass pickups. They're all about warmth, sustain, and a clean, singing tone. The Area J bridge and neck pickups capture all of those qualities. They're not loud, but they have a very focused attack, so they have power where it counts - at the center of the tone. The lows are very clear and clean, and the highs are both smooth and open-sounding. The magnet-pull has been reduced, and the included 4-conductor wiring allows both series and parallel humbucking modes.

Comments about DiMarzio DP249 Area J Neck and Bridge Pickup Set:

I build my own guitars, and I've used Dimarzio pickups before. These pickups are exactly as described on DiMarzio's website. "The sound of the 60's Jazz bass single coil pickups without the hum". Good clean high output, wide range tone; you add the crunch or fuzz or any other effect without worrying about covering any extraneous noise from the guitar.

    Amazing tone, period.

Comments about DiMarzio DP249 Area J Neck and Bridge Pickup Set:

I put a set of these in my Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass, and the difference was phenomenal. With a set of flatwounds on that, I have a smooth, warm, full-bodied tone that sounds amazing. I get compliments on my tone all the time, including some from people with much more expensive basses. These pickups are an improvement for just about any jazz bass, but they can make even a cheap one sound amazing. The sound is even across all strings--something you don't find in a lot of after-market jazz pickups. Overall, I'm a huge, huge fan of these. They might not be your cup of tea if you're looking for an aggressive modern tone, but hey, if you wanted that, go for the Dimarzio Ultra Jazz instead.

These pickups are exactly as described on DiMarzio's website. "The sound of the 60's Jazz bass single coil pickups without the hum". That nails it...a nice forward, up front midrange with just enough highs and excellents lows without ANY noise at all. The only thing I didn't like was that they were almost too big to fit in my '68 Jazz bass body pickup routes without opening up the cavities but I did get them installed and they are tight in the cavaties but are still fully height adjustable. HIGHLY recommended.

Comments about DiMarzio DP249 Area J Neck and Bridge Pickup Set:

These pickups are amazing, beautiful tone and no noise, exactly what I wanted for the Fender American Standard Jazz Bass. Easy install, fit perfectly, requires about four solder connections. No battery.

        Great J-Bass Tone

        By Brandon Whitt

        from Atlanta

Comments about DiMarzio DP249 Area J Neck and Bridge Pickup Set:

These pickups are exactly what I was hoping for. They sound like single-coil J-bass pickups without the hum. I recorded some tracks with the stock Fender pickups and with the Area J pickups to compare the tone. I could not tell a difference between them.
These pickups have two coils placed side-by-side (like a P-bass) which eliminates the single-coil hum but retains the single-coil tone. Now that is a great feature!
DiMarzio pickups are generally well made. These pickups are no exception. They come with black mounting screws too.
The pickups sound great but are a lot cheaper than the competition. I have a set of Nordys in my 5-string, but the Area J sounds just as good for half the price.

        Dimarzio does it again!

Comments about DiMarzio DP249 Area J Neck and Bridge Pickup Set:

I put these in a 2010 Fender American Std Jazz bass after being a fan of the Dimarzio Model J(which I have in my 99 American Std Jazz) pickups for so long. But I think I've found my new favorite Jazz bass pickup. The reason is the "single coil pickup"-like tone in a split coil/noise free pickup. Basically, these pickups sound like true single coils. Additionally, the pole pieces that sit beneath the A and D strings are slightly higher than that of the E and G strings, which helps your bass have an even output from string to string. The lows have clarity, so they have more punch and less mud, and you can actually get some nice highs, albeit not the glassy highs Marcus Miller fans would like, but for a hum cancelling pickup, they do a good job. I have owned Fralin hum cancelling, SD 1/4, Dimarzio Model J's, and of course the stock Fender American Std Jazz pickups, and these get you closest to the traditional Jazz bass sound while freeing one of the 60 cycle hum/noise that you get when soloing traditional single coil Jazz pickups.

Just what I was looking for

        By Snake-Lj9wb

Comments about DiMarzio DP249 Area J Neck and Bridge Pickup Set:

I have a Fender Jaguar bass that came with Fender Vintage Jazz Bass pickups. I love the sound of those pickups but not the noise if I wanted to solo the neck or bridge pickup. After over a year with my bass, I started looking for noiseless pickups. I wanted the sound of the Vintage Jazz pickups but no noise which narrowed my choices since most replacement pickups tout more low end, high end, midrange, growl, etc... I like the concept of split coils (like a P Bass pickup in one straight line case) and the Area Js were supposed to be vintage sound and split coil. The Area Js are also 4 wire pickups allowing series, parallel, or single coil wiring. I installed mine using two 2P3T switches so I can select series/parallel/single wiring on each pickup (EA side is Red+ Black- and DG side is White+ Green-).Now the results: I love these pickups! They sound like the Fenders when wired in parallel (Red and White together as + and Black and Green together as -). In series (the method suggested by DiMarzio in the instructions: Red as +, Black and White together, and Green as -) they are louder, have more bass and midrange, and have less treble. They are not exactly like the Fenders. I can't put my finger on it, but I prefer the DiMarzios.

Do Yourself a Favor and Buy These

        By MK1

Comments about DiMarzio DP249 Area J Neck and Bridge Pickup Set:

These are some of the best pickups I've used in a long time. I'm normally used to using high end pickups such as Lindy Fralins and Nordstrand, but this time I didn't have that kind of budget. While I normally have a bias against DiMarzio (too modern sounding for my taste), but I thought I would give these a try after reading the description. These pickups have great warm sound with a lot of vintage growl. And best of all no noise what so ever. Whether you are using both pickups or soloing the bridge or neck pickup there is absolutely no noise. These are a direct replacement for American Fenders, and the newer Mexican Fenders (the bridge pickup is slightly longer than the neck). I'm so glad I took the chance on these pickups, I would buy them again in a heart beat.
