Overview

One thing has stayed consistent throughout John Petrucci's long and successful career: the DiMarzio pickups in his guitars. John has been pushing the envelope of progressive rock since the late eighties, and this DiMarzio LiquiFire Humbucker Pickup ensued from DiMarzio's most recent collaboration with John. He used this guitar pickup throughout Dream Theater's tenth studio album, Black Clouds & Silver Linings. John swears this is the best live and studio sound he has ever heard. He wanted a neck pickup with a flowing, singing solo tone when used with a heavily overdriven amp, plus a clear chord sound with a clean amp setting.

The DiMarzio DP227 guitar pickup is recommended for the neck position but can also be used in bridge position.

Comments about DiMarzio DP227 LiquiFire Neck Humbucker Pickup:

Installed in the neck pickupickup of my mahogany les paul double cutaway. Sounds great - lots of sustain, clear smooth articulate tone. I found it to be very clear while playing fast "shred" bits. It sounds darker in my guitar than it does in a lot of the online examples, but a lot of those guitars were Alder. But I still like it

Comments about DiMarzio DP227 LiquiFire Neck Humbucker Pickup:

So I purchased this along with a Crunch Lab in a set. I installed the LF in the neck and the CL in the bridge. I wasn't very impressed with the Crunch Lab. But I took the Crunch Lab out and put the Liquifire in the bridge cause I noticed how clear and articulate it was, the bass was so tight and.. My god, I've never gotten a better sound from my Schecter. I'd recommend this in the neck for metal leads, but also in the bridge for very tight rhythms and even solos. It sounds great either way, note definition is similar to a BKP aftermath. Fantastic pickup. Definitely outshines the EMG set the guitar came with and the Crunch Lab. It's paired with a Super 2 in the neck. Really good combination, if you have this and haven't tried it in the bridge, do it, you will not regret it.

    Incredible!

I can't say enough about this pickup. It's so versatile, there's literally nothing it can't do. It has a very warm, midrange-y tone that works whether you're chugging tight metal riffs, strumming clean jazz or shredding leads. The sound is harmonically rich which provides nearly endless sustain. With distortion notes retain great clarity even with complex chords. I paired it with the Breed in the bridge position which sounds much brighter when you listen to them side by side.

Exactly what I was looking for!

Comments about DiMarzio DP227 LiquiFire Neck Humbucker Pickup:

I don't say this often, but this pickup does EXACTLY what I want it to do. I put this pickup in the neck position of my Epiphone G400 guitar to get better drive tones and less mud in my sound. This pickup really sings. It has great sustain and clarity. The stock neck pickup in Epiphones is really muddy, but this pickup maintains a lot of clarity, even at high levels of distortion. I think this pickup really shines when you get high-gain distortion set up with a wah and a delay pedal. The high-end is trebly enough to stand out and cut through a mix, but it isn't ear piercing. I would really recommend this pickup for anyone seeking those Petrucci-like leads that are open and full. If you are thinking about replacing pickups in your guitar, put a Liquifire in the neck. It has a great bang for the buck, and it sounds amazing. I opted to use a D'Activator in the bridge position, and the two together really complement each other well.

    Dream Articulation & Tone!!

    By Steven Waters

Comments about DiMarzio DP227 LiquiFire Neck Humbucker Pickup:

Anyone familliar with John Petrucci's work can tell you that he has awesome technique, tone and articulation! I ordered this along with the bridge crunch lab pickup to pop into a Sterling JP50 (Budget Petrucci model) as direct-mount replacements. This pickup delivers EXTREMELY good articulation with a lot of headroom for single note picking. It has a very warm and 'hot' tone for both cleans, grunge distortion, and high-gain lead. The pickup's versatility shines all throughout the neck, (not just on notes above the 8th fret like most neck pickups. As the description says, you can also use this pickup in the bridge position, and I will definitely consider ordering two more of these to pop into one of my other guitars as a set! - (It's that good!) Earlier tonight, I compared this pickup to my ESP guitar that has an EMG85 in the neck position with an 18v conversion.(Super-Hot Sound with a lot of headroom) The Liquifire had MORE OUTPUT! and a clearer more full sound - It doesn't mess around! I cannot say enough good things about this pickup. DiMarzio and Petrucci have definitely done some very good work in designing this pickup. Pick one up and play one for yourself! :)
