Overview

Active humbuckers have a distinctive sound - powerful, clean, open sounding, with excellent harmonic overtones and very tight lows. The down side for many players is that they also sound cold, have limited dynamics and run out of headroom when played hard. And of course, they need batteries. In 2006 DiMarzio took a close look at the most popular active neck and bridge humbuckers to see if they could capture all of the good qualities and eliminate the disadvantages. The D Activator neck and bridge models are the result. They have the same loud yet clean sound, as players of active humbuckers are familiar with, and killer harmonics. They also respond instantly to hard or light pick attack. In a word, they rock. And they don't need batteries.

Recommended For: Neck. Can also be used in bridge position

Tech Talk: There's a big difference between a pickup that sounds bright and one that sounds thin. A thin-sounding pickup will be brittle on the highest frets and empty sounding in the mids and lows. The D Activator neck model doesn't do this - both the wound and plain strings remain tight and bright up the neck, and very well balanced. This allows the D Activator neck model to function well in both longer scale bolt-ons and shorter scale, set-neck guitars. It also makes for a good bridge pickup if you want a sound with a lot of snap and power. Like all passive pickups, D Activators require controls with a minimum value of 250Kohms. 500K is the standard all around value, and our 1Megohm tone control is best for long cable runs.

I have been playing humbucker guitars for the last 48 years, never being completely satisfied with the tone of the neck pickup. They are either too thick in the mids, or to boomy in the bass. The D Activator solved those problems for me. It is about the clearest & open sounding humbucker I tried, (which has been many). With its treble boost, it has a very balanced sound for a neck pickup, & split, its a great sounding single coil. Combine this with a Super Distortion in the bridge, (boosted mids) you have a great sounding pair of pickups. Back them off the strings for a weaker output if they're too hot for you. I have this combo in all my guitars, thanks Dimarzio.

I am in the process of finding the right neck pickup for my PRS SE Trmonti. This pickup lacked low end and sounded very shrill. It was hard to listen to. I thought at first that my soldering must have been comprimised. I resoldered and doubled checked the wiring schematics. This pickup just did not agree with this guitar. It may be a good pickup for heavier, more dense wood guitars. (Mine is Mohagony)

Comments about DiMarzio DP219 D-Activator Neck Humbucker Pickup:

100 percent better then the stock pickups that we had on our Epiphone korina flying v. They have a very crisp sound and a nice crunch. It goes great with the dp100 super distortion. Puting this pickup in your guitar is like buying a new amp. Yea they sound that good. Do buy.

Comments about DiMarzio DP219 D-Activator Neck Humbucker Pickup:

I put this in the neck position on my Schecter C1+. It sounds better than the Infinity that was in there, but it doesn't have the highs and it sounds rather muddy. It is true that I have never installed a pickup before this, but on the same guitar I installed a new p'up in the bridge and it sounds great. I've checked the wiring and reversed the phasing, but still no luck.
Possibly it doesn't go well with my guitar's body, etc...
It seems like a well-made p'up but just not working the best for me.

    Sounds Great

    By ANTHONY LOWREY

Comments about DiMarzio DP219 D-Activator Neck Humbucker Pickup:

I don't know guitar stuff really but here's my shot at this. This pickup has huge sustain and I use it in GTR3. It is obviously well balanced and has its own character. Although I say it's well balanced sounding what I mean is it sounds great. It is just like it's rating at Dimarzio, on the trble side. What you get is a little whine with the treble down on the amps. It's unique sounding on my Schecter C-1 +. It's sensitive to different picks but remains in its characteristic sound. What I mean is it sounds cool no matter how you pick it. Single coil is noticably single coil but really with only a mild surfy sound. I have the strings pretty close. I am more pleased with my X2n in the bridge than this in the neck but I feel I really did well when I chose the Jesus selection in this pairing together of humbucks that go single coil also. Im diggin this guitar stuff. I love Dimarzio.

      Great sound

Comments about DiMarzio DP219 D-Activator Neck Humbucker Pickup:

I recently dropped a set of these into an old Ibanez rs1400. I was originally reluctant at first to replace the stock super 85s in the guitar, however, once I had done so I had no regrets what so ever. I used 250 pots over 500s because of the natural highs in the guitar. I also have a pre-Fender Jackson with Seymors and these just blow it out of the water.

      Incredible!

Comments about DiMarzio DP219 D-Activator Neck Humbucker Pickup:

I had this pickup installed as a replacement for my stock pickup. I actually put this pickup in the bridge position instead of the neck, because I bought it used from my guitar shop and they didn't have the bridge version, so I figured I'd save some money. Wow, what a difference it made in the tone of the guitar! The guitar sounds sharper, crisper, cleaner and just more overall professional. Yesterday it was a simple Behringer Strat and today it sounds better than all my friends guitars, including a higher end ESP model and a Douglas with Seymour Duncans! I'm very impressed by this pickup's output. This pickup is very versatile. It'll play probably any genre.

Great sound, but a bit trebley

Comments about DiMarzio DP219 D-Activator Neck Humbucker Pickup:

My Ibanez vbt700 came with these installed. They sound really great distorted or clean, but for me they just have too much treble. you can see on the dimarzio website how high the treble is. however, if you like that..buy these, you will NOT be dissapointed.

Comments about DiMarzio DP219 D-Activator Neck Humbucker Pickup:

After alot of research and listening to pick ups, I went with the D Activators. Had a tech install the DP219 and DP220 in an '05 Epi LP Custom. These pups are rediculous!! I couldn't believe the HUGE difference in tone and output... Unreal! Bare in mind, Stock pots, etc. Just the pups. If you're looking for a righteous tone and a HUGE boost in your git. These are badboys! Like some of the other reviews, The DP219 absolutely wailz!! No mods, No stupid 9volt battery, none of that garbage. Just straight DiMarzio power!!

      Totally rockin!

      By ibanezman5150

Comments about DiMarzio DP219 D-Activator Neck Humbucker Pickup:

Just had bridge and neck D-activators installed and they rock. I typically just play in the bridge position but my luthier recommended putting both in and I am glad he did. I know love playing in the neck position too. You can hear every note in every chord even with a ton of distortion. So cool! These pickups also change dramatically when you adjust your guitars volume knob which is awesome. You can really clean up the sound by lowering the volume just a bit. Gives a great 70's rock sound that way and you don't have to touch your amp or pedals. I put these in my Ibanez S520EX and now it rocks. I couldn't be happier. Thanks Guitar Center and Dimarzio! I am playing more and better than ever.
