Overview

Joe Satriani has used the Fred as his main bridge pickup for years. This year Joe asked DiMarzio for a hotter and bigger version to replace the Fred in his Ibanez guitars. In response, DiMarzio created the DP216 Mo' Joe Bridge Pickup, and it's all about tone and definition. The name says it all. It has more power than the Fred, but it doesn't sacrifice clarity or dynamics.

Additionally, all the harmonics that made the Fred guitar pickup so good are all there, ready to jump out at the touch of a guitar pick. Having more output makes it a perfect match for the PAF Joe in the neck position. The combination delivers great versatility and control from rhythms to solos.

Recommended For: bridge position, solid and semi hollowbody guitars.

Tech Talk: The last few years have seen Joe develop a new signature tube amp and start using heavier-gauge strings more often. Both developments emphasized the importance of the Mo' Joe„¢ pickup in having a high degree of string separation without sounding sterile or processed. DiMarzio achieved this by slightly increasing the distance between the center frequencies that the coils are tuned to, without increasing DC resistance. The result is a pickup that's both hotter and more articulate.

Comments about DiMarzio DP216 Mo' Joe Bridge Pickup:

I bought this for the bridge position (and a Chopper for the neck position)on my Ibanez JS140. This is much more sensitive to your touch then the stock unit. I played a few gigs with the stock pickups and liked how they sounded but I decided to replace them with the DiMarzios anyway. I really wasn't too impressed when I first put them in but after playing a couple of gigs with the DiMarzio equipped guitar I have completely changed my mind. They sound much more "full" and are very sensitive to your touch. When you roll the volume back, the tone remains lively. With the coil tapping you get a wide range of sounds too. By no means are you locked in to sounding just like Satch(is that really so horrible?) They also sound a bit warmer than the stock units but still have plenty of bite. If you buy a JS 140, buy this too. If you're playing anything else, I would bet this improves your tone.

      Tone machine

      By Michael Crawley

Comments about DiMarzio DP216 Mo' Joe Bridge Pickup:

Okay, so first off, let me tell you. I previously had Dimarzio Breeds installed in my basswood RG, and although the sound was great, I was lacking the clarity I wanted. This pickup fixed that! Each and every note is clear as could be, and these pups also stand out a lot better in the mix then the darker Breeds. The Mo Joe is pretty bright, but has a really smooth fat sound at the same time. Hard to decribe. They do sound like Satch, but can sound anyway you want with a tweak of your amp. One warning, these pups will pick up your mistakes! The Breeds, although higher output, were more forgiving. So if your sloppy, you might want to try something else from Dimarzio! Basically, if you want super clear sounding distortion, and crystal clear cleans, then go for the Mo Joe. You won't regret it!

      Plain and simple.....THE BEST!

Comments about DiMarzio DP216 Mo' Joe Bridge Pickup:

I just put this in my Ibanez RGT42. I play thru a Line6 Bogner 112. On the "4 the luv Vai" setting, with the gain turned to 1/2, I really haven't heard a better tone in over 3 years. The pickup reacts to every pick dynamic, finger positioning, and over all "feeling" you have while playing. Joe knows what is right. I'm gonna have to practice more after hearing this pickup! It doesn't let you 'hide' behind any distortion. I've done my homework, there is not a better Dimarzio for the money. Try it for yourself thru a real 'tube' amp. You won't be disappointed!

      Good Pick Up

      By Erik

Comments about DiMarzio DP216 Mo' Joe Bridge Pickup:

I put the pickup in an Ibanez js100. And I was convinced at the moment, it was love at firtst sigth. The general sound of the guitar doesn't change dramatically, maybe the original pick up gets an 8 and this pickup gets a 9. But there are very good things in this pickup. It is a very expressive pickup, sensible to the picking, and the fingering, I mean, making bends, slides. Is incredible easy to get armonics. And have a good sustain and the perfect otput level for me. I like the tone of this pick up. Is easy to get the exact tone of Satriani with this guitar and PickUp, Althoug, is not exclusive for this. It can be used to play anythig else and sounds great and not as Satriani. the bad of this pickup: is very "trebly" for my taste. I Put a 9, because is not the heaven.

      Mo' Joe pickup

      By DJH

      from California

Comments about DiMarzio DP216 Mo' Joe Bridge Pickup:

I put this in the bridge of my Ibanez JS100 with the Paf Joe in the neck. It has a good sound for Heavy Metal. I noticed both pickups only really sound good with a high gain distortion pedal, otherwise the harmonics are not very good on either one. However, they do sound good clean. I would buy the Mo'Joe again, but not the PAF Joe. Instead I would use a PAF Pro with the Mo'Joe. I didn't give it 5's all the way, because it does need high gain to bring the most out of it. The Super Distortion would be a better pick if you don't use high gain all the time. It sounds good regardless of the distortion level. I think the Super Distortion and PAF Pro both have better harmonics, than either one of the Satriani pickups. The Mo' Joe does have a lower end tone than the Super distortion, which has more treble, but you can compensate with your tone settings and a BBE Sonic Stomp (which every player should have anyway). It just comes down to personal preference. If you use high gain most of the time, then you'll problably like the Mo'Joe.
