Overview

The Air Norton started out simply to be the Airbucker version of the Norton. DiMarzio thought it would make a distinctive-sounding bridge pickup with high-gain amps, but soon discovered that it's a radically neat neck pickup, too. The tone is deep and warm, but not muddy. It's hot, but not distorted. It's even got cool harmonics, which are really unusual for a neck humbucker. The patented Air Norton magnetic structure reduces string-pull, so sustain is improved; and pick attack and dynamics are tremendously controllable and expressive. Combine the Air Norton with an Air Zone, The Tone Zone or Steve's Special in the bridge position for a perfect blend of power and tone, or use an Air Norton in the bridge position with an Air Classic bridge model in the neck position for a distinctive medium-output blues-rock sound.

Recommended For: Solid body and semihollow body guitars.

Tech Talk: When the Air Norton is in the neck position, it's a warm, open-sounding pickup with enough power to balance with all bridge humbuckers. Try it with 500K pots for maximum treble and harmonic presence. In the bridge position, the sound is medium output with solid lows and biting harmonics. You can try it here with 250K controls, or a 500 K volume and 250K tone to fatten the highs up a little. Combines well with Air Classic in neck, and also with Cruiser, Chopper and Blue Velvet single-coils.

I've had this pickup for over a year, so I didn't just put it in yesterday and now i'm raving about it. What it sounds like (In Neck position): It's crystal clear, notes sing out forever, it's part of the "air" series that has a special magnet that reduces string pull and allows for longer sustain, which is absolutely wonderful. It sounds fat, very vowel-like. The cool thing about it is that it's very dark sounding, but has an amazing clarity. Harmonics scream, and every note picked is very present and has great dynamics. It's almost like having a second bridge pickup, it has that sort of clarity, but with that neck pickup smooth tone. If you are experiencing noise with this pickup, YOU goofed the wiring, or you don't know how to control your rig properly. If you don't have this pickup set high enough near the strings, you probably will have a "dark muddy" tone, like any pickup would too far from the strings.I gave it a 10 on all the ratings, because it has all the features a humbucker can have, top notch quality, an excellent value, and a great sounding pickup. It will be legendary one day, it's that good, at least to my ears.

I put this in the neck of an Ibanez Prestige and it is way too muddy and dark. The pickup would probably be good for cats who play jazz and want a dark tone from the clean neck setting or if you are looking to warm up a bright and brittle sounding guitar, this may work.

Comments about DiMarzio DP193 Air Norton Pickup:

I was referred to this pickup by DiMarzio. In 2000, I bought a Gibson LesPaul Classic, stock ceramic 496 and 500 pups. I played through a Mesa Rectifier at the time. The combination didn't work, to my ear. Overpowered. Sounded like the guitar was out of tune even though it wasn't. I had DiMarzios in my Ibanez, so I called them (got a real person, first try) and explained the issue. The tech recommended Air Zone (bridge) and Air Norton (neck), to retain the 'meat' but back off on the pressure that made the sound harsh, going into an already hi-gain amp. WORLD of difference. I may experiment with the bridge pup, but that Air Norton has never left. Most notable feature, is that you can almost get the same squealing and chiming harmonics as you can with whatever you have in the bridge. Far more freedom to experiment with neck soloing using an Air Norton, in my opinion.

      Great all around

I have one in the neck position of a telecaster and one in the neck position is a custom strat. Glassy and smooth great for lead work in the upper register as well as a bass-ey jazz tone. I have both of mine split and as a single coil they have a strat-like quality and great for funk rhythm.

      TONE!

      By Alex-Zg5qT

      from USA

Comments about DiMarzio DP193 Air Norton Pickup:

This pickup is quite unique. It has a sort of glassy, almost single coil like chirp, yet all of the warm sustain and fluid response you could ever want. It is wild yet refined, and just sings under high gain, and is very full bodied and warm clean. I'm extremely pleased.
I have this in the neck position on two of my Ibanez RG prestige guitars. All I can say is "sweet, glassy, toneful, singing." Just amazing through my Soldano SLO. I have these paired with a tone zone in the bridge, and it is an amazing match.
      Dimarzio is top notch

      Amazing Little Pickup

Comments about DiMarzio DP193 Air Norton Pickup:

I just installed this guy in my Gibson Les Paul in the Neck Position, and its the best neck pickup I have ever used. It is a great Combo with the Tone Zone and (which is a great middle pickup in my LP) and the Super Distortion (in the bridge of my LP). I recommend this to anybody out there looking for a great neck pickup.

      Perfect Neck Pickup

      By ÃœberShred

      from Georgia

Comments about DiMarzio DP193 Air Norton Pickup:

The Air Norton is easily one of the best neck pickups I've ever heard. I rarely use it with distortion, but even then it still sound incredible. But really the cleans are where it's at. It's clear and beautiful and best of all it sounds full and fat all the way up the fretboard. Buy this pickup! You won't regret it!

      Incredible

      By Benson

      from Hammond, IN

Comments about DiMarzio DP193 Air Norton Pickup:

I recently got one of these for the neck position of my PRS Singlecut along with a D-Sonic in the bridge (yes, I'm a Petrucci tone fan) and I was floored by the quality of the sound. Brilliantly clean for fast passages, with thick sustain for those slowhand moments. It's also wired for coil tap, and it creates this brilliant bright tone when split, excellent for clean parts. They're essentially giving these things away at that price - if you want a change in clarity and sustain without a big change in your tone you worked so hard for, go with the Air Norton, for sure.

      Great neck pickup

      By DannDMann

      from Norfolk, VA

Comments about DiMarzio DP193 Air Norton Pickup:

I love this pick up! I tried it both in the neck & bridge. Here's my take: In the bridge it was pretty good, I just need a little more mid & treb for 1 of my bands so I ended up going with a tone zone. In the neck, this to me is the best sounding neck pickup I heard outside of Yngwie's neck pickup sound. It tracks well and has a great attack to it. Very big sounding and the clean is really nice too. I haven't wired it for split coils so I can't give an opinion on that, but I think my next guitar I get I will wire it for that. Anyways, I use this in both a guitar in standard and 1 tuned down to B and it sounds great in both. As far as the guy who said not to use it with a floyd, I don't know why. Maybe he needs an Fspaced one. Both guitars I have this in are old (1 87 & 1 89) Ibanez RGs. I haven't had any issue with these and the trem.

      Amazing!

      By Guitarballa

Comments about DiMarzio DP193 Air Norton Pickup:

I put this pickups into the neck position of my Gibson Les Paul and I couldn't be happier. The cleans of this pickup are amazing and with distortion its sounds beautiful. I play through either a Marshall JCM 2000 TSL or a Peavey Valveking and this pickup sounds amazing through them for every type of music. I'm going to put this in every one of my Gibsons soon.
