Overview

The DiMarzio DP163 Bluesbucker Humbucker Pickup looks like a standard humbucker, but sounds like a P90 and cancels 60-cycle hum as effectively as the average humbucker. This means any guitar with standard size humbuckers can now have the sound of P90s without altering the guitar in any way and without noise. Patented Virtual Vintage and Airbucker technology let the Bluesbucker "see" a narrow string window like a true single-coil, making it extremely sensitive to playing dynamics. When a pair of these pickups are on together, they achieve the open, slightly hollow sound that two single-coils produce. Splitting the pickup produces a sound similar to that of a Strat pickup, with very little drop in output.

Recommended For: All positions
The coil with the 6 adjustable slotted poles is the "hot" coil. The coil with the solid poles is along for the ride to cancel hum and look cool. Since one coil is doing most of the work, the direction the Bluesbucker is installed makes an obvious difference in the sound. When the hot coil is closest to the bridge, the sound is brighter; towards the neck is warmer. Even though the look is a little nontraditional, we like the sound of the bridge pickup "backwards" (with the screw coil towards the neck). With a Bluesbucker in the neck position with the screw coil towards the bridge (also "backwards") the combined sound is Tele-like. With the neck pickup in the more traditional direction, the combination is like two P-90s. The Bluesbucker comes with special wiring instructions.

Comments about DiMarzio DP163 Bluesbucker Humbucker Pickup:

I put this pickup in a project guitar, Epiphone Les Paul Jr., adding good tuners and new nut. Installed Bluesbucker with screws toward neck.. It is advertised as a humbucker with P-90 tones and I tried it because Juniors and P-90 sounds are synonymous. I can't say it is as advertised but I love how it sounds. .Playing clean, an aggressive attack gives a p-90 flavor. Not Mississippi Queen but add some distortion...it will do. Moderate attack produces chiming, rich, saturated tones with open strings,....playing up the neck I get a nice Les Paul flavor with tight, defined tones. And dialing down the treble on Junior gives a more acoustic sound. This Chinese Junior is heavy, no idea what the wood is......mahogany flooring is my guess.....but the the guitar is alive and resonant so who cares...The Bluesbucker gives me some versatility and a number of sounds I like. The ceramic magnets sound astonishingly good on this guitar. It's over 4 stars so I gave it 5.

A concept pickup that does'nt quite work

      By Robert West

Comments about DiMarzio DP163 Bluesbucker Humbucker Pickup:

This pickup pretty much sucks. At least for les pauls anyway. I recently purchased it along with a 36th anniversary PAF. Based on how dimarzio describes it and rates it's treble, bass and mid output, it sounded like it would be a good fit. I opted for the neck, installed conventionally poles facing north. I found that the dimarzio 36th anniversary pup sounded excellent. Clear and true with harmonics, crispness and a tone that "cut through" all the way. The bluesbucker unfortunately sounds a bit obscurred. Not muddy in the same way that really cheap pickups are muddy (like the stock epiphone ones) but it sounds like the highs and mids do not shine all the way through and are muddled by a boomy overtone. It sounds like it stuggles to express itself. Like a stereo that has it's EQ set weird. Moreso this pickup tries to be something it is not and fails. It is suggested that it is sounds like a soapbar p-90 in a humbucker form. Boy would that be sweet if it were possible and true. P-90's sound awesome. I may end up buying a p-90 guitar (Gibson LP special) later on down the road. It was for this reason that i took a gamble in trying this pup in an effort to create a versatile guitar capable of two distinct sounds. To me it sounds like a humbucker that has a smudged imperfect tonal balance. I suspect if this were in a semi hollow body guitar it would sound better. That would disperse some of it's sound congestion. For a les paul i think i will stick with Alnico PAF's. My next trial will be a seymour duncan antiquity which i have high hopes for. The bluesbucker was a bit of a gamble. There are not many reviews or sound clips on them. As far as the good reviews on this, do not be tricked. I will say this. This pickup sounded better than the stock chinese epiphones i replaced. So based on that standard i could see where some people are happy with it. I had this installed next to an outstanding pickup (36th anniversary PAF) so the contrast was stark. Also Dimarzio even admits it sounds better with the poles facing south (backwards). I can imagine it sounding a little better that way but not enough to justify keeping it. Dimarzio has a huge selection of pups and they are not afraid to try new concepts so i respect that about them and will continue to buy or at least consider their products. To me this pickup serves no real purpose though which will be evidenced by it's low sales and general lack of feedback regarding it.

      Amazing pickup

      By Steve Weiss

Comments about DiMarzio DP163 Bluesbucker Humbucker Pickup:

I have a Epiphone Dot Studio which is a dream to play, but came with somewhat weak pickups. I installed a DiMarzio Bluesbucker in the neck position hoping to improve on the thin tone of the stock pup. Installation was easy thanks to the clear instructions that came with it. The ring holes with the new one didn't match up so I used the old one. It looks just fine. Now to the good part... I was, and am still blown away by the huge sound of the Bluesbucker. My $299.00 dollar poor man's ES 335 is now a tone monster. It's hard to find the right words to describe the tone of this thing. I'll just say that I once had a 335, and the tone of the Epi with the DiMarzio is every bit it's equal. If you're looking to upgrade, I highly recommend the Bluesbucker.
