Overview

The vowel-like open wah-wah feel of the PAF Pro and FRED is combined with tremendous midrange and bass for a sound that really kicks hard. Because the lows, mids, and highs are all boosted, using a Tone Zone feels like cranking up an extra set of tone controls. It adds further dimension to the sound of your amp - that elusive edge that can make a good-sounding rig into a great-sounding one. Notes seem to get bigger after they're picked, and burn hard as they sustain. It's the right stuff to wake up your amp. Ballsy, aggressive tone has plenty of drive in all the right frequencies, abundant gain to push preamps and power amps, and sensitivity to pick attack that gets the most out of any style from metal to blues. Hot enough to qualify as a high-output pickup but with a wider dynamic range. Hard picking will produce a lot of power and softer picking will be much cleaner and quieter.

Quite an upgrade from the previous pickups installed, EMG 81s. By comparison the EMGs sound like a hissy static noise.

This is exactly what I'm looking for as metal player that dabbles in rock and softer tones from time to time. You'd be very hard pressed to find a better pick up for any genre of music that requires an electric guitar.

Great response, very chunky and meaty but still crystal clear. Capable of any tone you want to throw at it.

Easy 5/5, highly recommended.

I bought this pickup thnking that I was gonna get a real nice clean low-sounding bass sound, even with distortion. When I add distortion to this baby, it is sad to say, sounds like crap. But this is a great pickup for clean sounds. Nice warm bass and acoustic-sounding treble.

Comments about DiMarzio DP155 Tone Zone Humbucker Pickup:

This went into an Ibanez RG420GK in the bridge position. I was surprised at how well it sounded and compliments the stock neck pup.

When playing through the crunch channel, the overall distortion and tone was smooth. Not too gritty and midrange level was to my liking.

Comments about DiMarzio DP155 Tone Zone Humbucker Pickup:

I recently bought a Gibson Les Paul Less Plus, I replaced the bridge Classic 57 Plus pickup with a Seymour Duncan JB SH4. Though I liked the way it sounded, I wasn`t very impressed. The JB has very good mids and highs but it lacks bass, and the combination of the JB with the neck pickup (Classic 57) wasn`t good. The Classic 57 has more bass response than the JB, so they were not balanced. I decided to go for the Tone Zone in the bridge position. Wow, what a change! Now my guitar has a great sound, the combination of the tone zone in the bridge with the Classic 57 in the neck is now balanced. I play Hard rock and 80's metal and now my guitar is really present and sounds great with distortion, the mids and highs are really present and the low frequencies make the guitar sound ballsy! Get it if you are into great big sound!

Comments about DiMarzio DP155 Tone Zone Humbucker Pickup:

I installed the DiMarzio Tone Zone in an Ibanez SA160FM. I got the F spaced and it fit just right. I have been playing since the early 70's and have used a lot of pickups and I have to say this is one of the better one's I've used. Classic Rock, Blues, and even Metal, this pickup does it all. It sounds wonderful clean and distorted. It has just the right amount of output that you can pick hard for a more aggressive sound or lighter for nice subdued sound. I will buy more of these.

Comments about DiMarzio DP155 Tone Zone Humbucker Pickup:

I put this pickup in my brighter les paul. It did the exactly what everything I read. It was a very warm heavy tone. The issue I had though it was way to hot. I found myself constantly trying to pull back my gain weather it was on the amp or peddles. Eventually it got to be to much and I found my tone a little on the muddy side. If your looking for a hot pickup with a bigger darker sound this pickup will work fine. But if you play different styles of music that isn't punk hard rock or metal this pickup is to much.

Great Pickup to fatten up a thin sounding guitar. Installed this into a San Dimas Charvel Alder Body with maple neck and fingerboard. Floyd equipped. Thin and trebly as hell. The Tone Zone fattened it up and made the difference.

Comments about DiMarzio DP155 Tone Zone Humbucker Pickup:

The Tone Zone has a sound that is much thicker than other humbuckers I have experimented with. The equalization places emphasis on the mids and lows while the highs are pulled back. This equates for an underlying tone that has chunk as well as punch. With the midrange enhanced, there is also a sharp edge to the sound at the same time the roundness of the low tone is heard. This makes for a very complex and large sound when used with distortion--so toneful, powerful, and musical. It is both modern and vintage sounding at the same time depending on your amp settings.

I have used the Tone Zone in all 3 Stratocaster positions (I have special pickguards made) and have used it in both neck and bridge positions of Gibson SGs. In the bridge position, chords are thick and have edge. High note solos are fat without a hint of thin buzzing. In the middle position, it has a sound similar to Van Halen's 'brown sound'. In the neck, it can prove to be powerful and somewhat boomy--however, if you use your neck pickup for leads, your sound with the Tone Zone will be round and fluid with very little edge--very smooth with distortion. I find that the SGs produce different sounds with the Tone Zone in that the bridge position can sound open and tight while the neck position is round --can be muddy if your amp settings are not set with enough treble.

To sum up this review, think of the Tone Zone as a passive pickup that has the boosted power, round vintage quality, and extended equalization to make your sound larger than any other pickup I have experienced to date.

I play professionally and have reviewed and used the Dimarzio Super 3 previously --and I love that pickup when I play strictly heavy metal, but the Tone Zone by Dimarzio is really a pickup that fits into almost any musical situation.

Comments about DiMarzio DP155 Tone Zone Humbucker Pickup:

I bought this pickup to replace the one in my modern player tele. This is the first time i have swapped pickups, so i bought this blind because of eq listing on dimarzio site wanting, to thicken the sound up. I was worried it wouldn't have enough top end but was I ever wrong. IT SOUNDS AWESOME!!!! The sound of the guitar is now thick and full with lots of bass and mid-range bite and growl but still has that tele top end and sparkle. I normally don't like the sound of a bridge humbucker on a clean channel becuase of the brightness, but this pickup has changed that to a full sound akin to a single coil in the neck but with more clarity and not as dark. If you are looking for the same I urge you to try this pick up. Great job Dimarzio, you have found a customer for life.
