Overview

Originally designed as a direct replacement for Gibson EB series neck pickups, the DiMarzio Model One Bass Humbucker Pickup has found new life as a woofer/tweeter in multi-pickup bass setups. By combining the Model One with Split P, DiMarzio Model P or DiMarzio Model J pickups, you can effectively turn your bass into a woofer/tweeter setup with on-board control of sonic extremes. By sending the Model One to a rig with an 18-inch speaker cabinet and plugging the other pickup's output into your regular gear, you have the makings of a sound with earth-moving bottom and crisp, transparent high-end. What's that sound like? Check out Billy Sheehan. It's the monstrous sound he's pioneered that's made Rock shake for years.

Comments about DiMarzio DP120 Model One Bass Humbucker Pickup:

The Model One I own was already installed in an EB-2dc when I got it more than 30 years ago. I don't know how old it is, but the bass is the best sounding bass I own. Can be warm, woody and thumpy, but if you EQ it right, it can turn into JAE snarl as well. It's got plenty of articulation and doesn't suffer from the kind of mud that a Gibson mudbucker has. It's sweeter sounding than any Fender pickup. Two things make it less than perfect: 1. it is a big, ugly slab of plastic, 2. it only fits mudbucker routes unless you take a router to another bass. Which I may do sometime in the future. They sound good enough to make that a reasonable option.

DiMarzio DP120 'Model One' Bass Pickup

      By dave hughs

Comments about DiMarzio DP120 Model One Bass Humbucker Pickup:

First of all, let me explain my 'four-star' rating; why it's not FIVE stars... Because it's FLAT BLACK! I always loved the look of that huge chrome 'patio brick' of a pickup on the EB-0 bass, and never could understand why DiMarzio made their upgrade replacement pickup only in flat black. With that out of the way... This pickup is killer! I never liked that stock Epiphone EB-0 pickup because it lacked that deep, muddy 'thud' of the real Gibson EB-0 pickup. But the DP120 gives you all that, plus a clarity in the upper harmonics that the original does not. Not that there's a whole lot of trebly stuff going on with the EB-0's configuration, but what's there is very clear and focused. There's a vast abundance of that good ol' low-end 'grunt' normally associated with the EB-0 bass, but it, too, is more focused and defined than with the stock pickup. The term 'mudbucker' that is used for the Gibson EB-0 pickup doesn't really apply to this unit. The DP120 has more than adequate bottom-end, but it's not nearly so 'rumbly' and 'muddy' as the original. This pickup is probably the best thing I could ever have done for my Epiphone EB-0. Period. It totally fills the bill for the tone I was after.
