I love Dimarzio pickups. I put this in the bridge of a custom 6 lb strat body and is was way too much given the weight and resonance of the guitar. Great loud heavy metal sound but no other kind of dynamic. Was not thrilled with how it sounded as a single coil. This would be better suited in a light, perhaps basswood, bodied guitar that is used for heavy metal. That being said a neck pickup to go with it should be comparable to its output. I switched to a Tone Zone and love it!

This is how to rock

Comments about DiMarzio DP100 Super Distortion Pickup:

Absolutely love the Super Distrortion. After 28 years of playing I decided to put one in my Les Paul. It's crunchier and slightly meaner than the 498T. It has mad sustain and crunch. A gritty snarl when volume knob is rolled back. Sharp strat sound when coil split. Definitley gives you the funk tone. I'm guessing all the modern pickups are based off the DP100. Like the P490, 498T, HB-L, 500T, DD, DF, etc. Even with different magnets seems like SD is the prototype for modern hot output pups. My opinion. Anyway, I bought the PAF Pro to pair up with the SD. See pic.

Comments about DiMarzio DP100 Super Distortion Pickup:

I play in a cover band and need to be able to get everything from funky cleans to crunchy rock tones, and this pickup covers them all very well. I have the DP100 in several of my guitars as it's become my go-to tone.

Comments about DiMarzio DP100 Super Distortion Pickup:

Try the DiMarzio Super Distortion with a split coil setup using a toggle switch or a push-pull switch. When you want to let it rip for rock or blues, use both coils and crank the amp. For clean chords, use the single coil bridge for a 50s Strat-like sound. You can even get jazz lead tones from the neck PU when switched to single coil. I love the versatility, and power chords are unbelievable. But if you want a searing heavy metal sound, you might prefer a different pickup with a preamp.

Comments about DiMarzio DP100 Super Distortion Pickup:

I have this pick up in my Ibanez RG560DX, Les Paul, and a ESP lynch model. They sound great in all of them. Play everything from soft rock to metal. These will clean up when you roll off the volume but it depends on how you set your amp. These are great for players who want a heavy sound but can still play a chord and hear all the notes. If you want that heavy distorted face melting tone then this is not your pick up.

Comments about DiMarzio DP100 Super Distortion Pickup:

This pickup has been around since the 1970s but I am so shocked at how modern and aggressive the sounds it makes are! Distorted chords and notes have so much tone and presence--not a hint of thin sounding buzz. I have been a long time user of the Super 3 and Tone Zone pickups from DiMarzio. I have also reviewed the Super 3 for MF in the past, as I really like it for playing and recording metal music. However--I put a plain Super Distortion in the bridge position of a H-S-H USA Fender Stratocaster and was blown away! The sound is so thick and full--lots of bass and loud mid-range, but still enough edge and crisp sharpness in the notes for definition. There is a reason this is the flagship pickup for this company--it creates perfect rock sounds when distorted. I highly recommend this to anyone considering a 'modern' sounding pickup--this is WAY better and truly is a 'standard' by which other pickups should be judged. Awesome!

Comments about DiMarzio DP100 Super Distortion Pickup:

What can you say about this pick up that has not been said. This things smokes! Huge output. Pushes you amp very hard. Big clear powerful distortion and over drive tones. This thing defines rock and roll just like it's cousin the Duncan JB. I think for metal players the Super D is better than the JB, because it is tighter and focused on the low end. Its stays tighter than the JB when you down tune and play modern stuff that's in the key of drop C ect ect. Big push in the mids which I love. I don't believe in scooped mids. It might sound good in your bed room but when you play live scooped mids sound like garbage. Scooped mids give the sound man fits! This thing sounds great! Awesome harmonics. Huge sustain. Everything about this pickup says power, huge, full, big. It's also very smooth sounding pick up. The JB is more of a raunchy looser sounding pick up, where as the Super D is tight and focused. Now where the JB wins is on the clean settings. The Super D doesn't do clean! The cleans sound sterile and lifeless to me. The pick ups is so hot it's difficult to even GET a clean sound, where as the JB sounds pretty darn good clean. But you're buying this baby for one thing and one thing only. Big, nasty heaps of distortion. And this pick up delivers distortion all day long! Lead notes absolutely scream out of the amp. If you play legato style like me you'll love how articulate this pick up is. It picks up every nuance of your playing. Hence it is very unforgiving. So start practicing! Cuts through the mix like a hot knife thru butter. But it's not too bright. Not too dark. JUST RIGHT! Rock On!!! Every one should have a Fender and a Gibson. And everyone should have at least one guitar with a Super Distortion in it. These are the rules. I didn't make them up. But I do live by them. Cheers.

Comments about DiMarzio DP100 Super Distortion Pickup:

I tried this pickup in both positions Neck and Bridge and there is a clear difference from the classic Super Distortion Humbucker I bought in the 80's. First of all the older has a lower growl which I love! I separated the wires one the classic pickup so I had 4 instead of the original 2 output wires. The New has the 4 wire outputs.after experimenting with several configurations (parallel, dual sound, coil taps, etc.) I eventually merged in 2 so I could get the best output in comparison. The new pick ups are not bad they just didn't have the tone I was expecting.

Comments about DiMarzio DP100 Super Distortion Pickup:

Put a set in the bridge of an LP Standard. We do a lot of 80's rock covers and these bad boys are the eighties. I love the double cream and also get a standard clean out of them. Don't expect a Fender sparkly clean but for live situations no problem. Take time to dial the pickup height and each pole piece and you will be very surprised. When I first installed them I was not all that happy, I took about an hour to set these up adjusting small each time. Wow I am very glad I did because I love this pickup. I gave it 5 stars not because it is the best all around PUP but you need to understand what you are buying and if you want 80's rock this is 5 stars all the way.
