DiMarzio Paul Gilbert Injector '67 Pickup Set (109290627)
Availability:

Developed to give Paul the fast response and versatility of tones he needs for high-speed single-note lines and power chords.

The DiMarzio Paul Gilbert Injector '67 Set contains 3 well-designed pickups: the Injector Neck (neck), the Area 67 (middle), and the Injector Bridge (bridge). Easy to install, they'll bring a collection of Paul's favorite tones to your Strat-style guitar while reducing noise.

DiMarzio first heard about Paul Gilbert in the 1980s. Billy Sheehan reported about an amazing 18-year-old who had recently arrived in California and had blown everyone away with his musicianship, speed, and awesome technical ability in Racer X. DiMarzio immediately asked Paul to become an endorser. It was the start of a great relationship. Recently, Paul has been heavily into DiMarzio Area pickups. He's also been playing a lot of Racer X-style instrumentals, so the time was right for signature Paul Gilbert single-coil sized DiMarzio pickups. The outcome of this teamwork is the new Injector Neck and Bridge Model pickups.

Injecter Neck (neck)
The Injector Neck Model has a modern rather than a vintage sound. It's warmer and louder (160mV output) than a typical vintage single-coil — and of course it's hum-canceling. It's also faster. The Injector Neck Model tracks high-speed solos at high gain without becoming either thin or muddy, and has a very full, well-balanced, clean sound. It has about 40% less magnet-pull than standard single-coils, and this is essential for the superior speed and dynamic range with which this pickup responds to pick attack.

Paul's setup on the guitar he played on Fuzz Universe was Injector Neck Model in the neck, Area 67 in the middle, and Injector Bridge Model in the bridge. The Injector is a lot louder and warmer than the Area 67 but the combination produces varied tonal colors in the 2 and 4 positions, with the Area 67 alone providing vintage tone and the Injector Neck & Bridge for heavier sounds.

Area 67 (middle)
The Monterey Pop Festival of 1967 was a watershed event in American music. When it was over, the world had heard and felt the sound of a Strat in the hands of a master. Single-coils in 1967 were bright and very clean. And, of course, they hummed. DiMarzio captured the classic bright and clean sound but totally eliminated the hum with their patented Area technology. They also reduced magnet pull by 40% for improved sustain and clarity. The Area 67 has the chime of 60s pickups, and the 2 and 4 positions are light, bright and quack-happy.

Strat pickups in the late 1960s used full-strength Alnico 5 magnets. The patented magnetic field of the Area models is more efficient and focused than it is on "true" single-coils, which allows us to use Alnico 2 instead. There's much less magnet pull, but no loss of output. This is a major advantage in the neck and middle positions, where sustain and intonation can both suffer if the strings are exposed to strong magnetic fields. In the bridge position, the patented technology of the Area '67 produces a sound that's very bright but not brittle.

Injector Bridge (bridge)
The Injector Bridge Model is one of DiMarzio's hottest hum-canceling models (185mV output) with six individual Alnico magnets. The sound is not like a vintage single-coil — highs are bright but not glassy, and lows are solid and defined. It was designed to work equally well with rapid single-note arpeggios and power chords without becoming muddy or compressed. It has about 40% less magnet-pull than standard single-coils, and this is essential for the superior speed and dynamic range with which this pickup responds to pick attack.

  • Powerful and Versatile Pickups!

As reviewed by Paul Larson on 3/27/2012

I've rarely been satisfied by traditional single-coil pickups because of the 60-cycle hum. These pickups have zero hum. In fact, they are so quiet that you probably won't even notice that you amp is on unless you pluck a string. The Injector neck, Area '67, and Injector bridge work very well together. The bridge pickup sounds great clean and distorted, the neck pickup excells at Stevie Ray Vaughn tones, and the middle pickup has a great vintage sound that works well with the other two pickups. The in-between (2 and 4) sounds are excellent as well. I have Seymour Duncan YJM Furys in another Stratocaster. The Injectors are a little hotter but both sets are simply awesome because they combine great clean tones with smoking distorted tones! If you have a "Strat" you need these pickups!

  • Simply Perfect!

As reviewed by David Larson on 1/19/2013

I loved the look, feel, weight and everything else about my 2000 MIM Fender Stratocaster, but we just weren't connecting. The original pickups were just dull & lifeless! I couldn't get the sounds I wanted out of it. I first made the switch to Fender's Custom Shop '54's. Although I could get some great tones out of those pickups, I still wasn't too happy with them and the single coil hum was driving me crazy (even after sheilding the cavities)! I actually put the guitar up for sale on Craigslist since I wasn't playing it. Well, I ended up pulling the ad. I figured I would try one more set of pickups & give it another shot. I was torn between these or the Lace Sensor "Hot Gold" set. I was really leaning toward the Sensors, just because I've heard them, know what they sound like & they have great reviews. I don't know anyone who has had the Paul Gilbert set and there seems to be a lack of reviews on them. I've also never had DiMarzio pickups before, I've always bought Seymour Duncan's, so I didn't really know what to expect. I pulled the trigger and just ordered this set. I'm glad I did! This is exactly what my strat needed! I don't want to put this guitar down now. The desciption that is given for these pickups are accurate, although it's hard to descibe sound without actually hearing. All the pickups, in all of the positions sound amazing! There is so much clarity & punch to these pickups. They are VERY responsive to your picking. You can go from light chimes to that hard spank sound with just the pressure of your picking. The lows sound great, as well as highs. To my ears, they nailed the perfect blend of bass, treble, mids as well as blending the vintage sounding "Area 67" with the more modern "Injectors". On top of all of these great sounds...they're NOISE FREE!! These are even more quiet than my Fender "Noiseless" vintage pickups in my telecaster. They are as quiet as my humbucker equipped guitars. In my overall opinion, I think DiMarzio has nailed it with these! If you are in the market for some upgraded pickups, I would highly recommend these. With this combination, you can pull off just about any genre of music & pull it off well!

  • Flippity flippin Awesome!!!!

As reviewed by joseph grande on 4/30/2013

These pickups have a very distinct voice. They sound stratty, but a little fuller. Somewhere between a strat pup and a P90. They can be bright and bell like like a strat or girthy and warm like a bucker. They pack alot of gain if needed and handle all varieties of distortion verywell. But they are also very responsive to how hard you strum and they have great pickup attack. They can do what ever you really need them to. They kcick some serious butt and are extremely versatile while sounding like every other strat out there. I'm a Fan.
