Get the 7-string sound that John Petrucci of Dream Theatre has spent decades perfecting.

One thing has stayed consistent throughout Dream Theater guitarist John Petrucci's long and successful career: the DiMarzio pickups in his guitars. John has been pushing the envelope of progressive metal since the late eighties and the DiMarzio LiquiFire Neck Guitar Pickup ensued from Dimarzio's most recent collaboration with John. He used this pickup throughout Dream Theater's tenth studio album, Black Clouds & Silver Linings. John swears this is the best live and studio sound he has ever heard. He wanted a neck pickup with a flowing, singing solo tone when used with a heavily overdriven amp, plus a clear chord sound with a clean amp setting.

The sound John likes in the neck position of his 6-string translates very well to the 7-string, with fat highs and clean lows for smooth solos and tight bass lines. The LiquiFire 7 pickup isn't an exact duplicate of the 6-string version in that the attack is a little more focused and the voicing is shifted down about 500Hz to bring out the sound of the seventh string.

Recommended for: Neck position; can also be used in bridge position.

  • Good for JP

As reviewed by Joshua Hickman on 4/15/2011

I have played the six-string version of this. The pickup is quite good on hi-gain; it has a fat yet singing tone with tones os sustain. On clean it is relatively warm with a glassy edge to it. The problem I have with it is that sounds very compressed and limited. It doesn't sound open at all, as if there is something missing. Overall, very good. But, not very versatile in tonal qualities

  • 7 String and 6 String Version are NOT THE SAME

As reviewed by Jeries Alfreih on 4/16/2011

I have a fixed bridged Ibanez 7 String, with a Liquifier in the neck and Crunch Lab in the bridge. Let me first mention, the 7 string and 6 string version do differ. The 7-String has the EQ dialed in a little bit differently than the 6 string, and it balances it out a little better for a 7 string. The Liquifier/Crunch Lab combo is what John Petrucci has been using lately and I think dominated the last Dream Theater album. They are a GREAT combination and sound amazing. I have each pickup split and my 5 way selector allows me to dial in every combination of the pickups- and on top of that split one or both in every combination. The Liquifier is very smooth and overall I think it sounds great. To my ears, similar to an EVOLUTION neck pickup (6 string). If you like the ERUPTING sound of Petrucci climbing up the scales quickly half palmuted than this is the pickup that will give you that rush. I love it!
