The basic characteristics of the 6-string Evolution bridge model sound like a perfect description for the 7-string DiMarzio DP704 lead pickup: power, attack and presence. Combining the basic Evolution design with Virtual Vintage technology results in a 7-string pickup possessing crunching lows and intense highs. The output voltage of the Evolution 7 is concentrated towards the upper mids and treble, so there's a lot of cutting power, and the low end stays hot and clear.

Recommended For: Bridge position.

Tech Talk: Making a 7-string version of a pre-existing 6-string pickup is not a simple matter of copying specs. Particularly with a high-output pickup, it's important that the low B string doesn't get muddy sounding. DiMarzio made the Evolution 7's coils brighter sounding than the 6-string version to make sure this doesn't happen, then used some of the same technology that went into the Virtual Vintage design to warm up the sound of the high strings without affecting the low B. The bass strings have a lot of clean power and the high strings cut through without sounding thin.

DiMarzio DP704 Evolution 7-String Pickup Features:

AMAZING PICKUP

Again, an AMAZING PICKUP. For such a demanding musician, Steve Vai only uses the best, and this is the one. So, for the simple fact that this pickup was developed to tame Vai's thirst for the ultimate tone, I was sold. Both live and in the recording studio, it's just got an amazing sound. The power obtained with this pickup drowns everyone in the band out, and the harmonics make my guitar scream like a wild banshee. Hey, don't take my word for it. BUY IT, and see for yourself.

Extreme Pickup

The evolution 7-string pickup is just what I needed to bring my Ibanez S7420 back to life. This pickup has an amazing amount of output and compliments the paf I have in the neck perfectly. Between the paf and evo-7 with a 5 way switch I have everything from shimmering to crunch in the clean channel of my Dual Recto. There is amazing definition in every note played from this pup and it is harmonically rich. This really tightened up the low B on my 7-string as well.
