The DiMarzio DP420 Virtual Solo hum canceling pickup combines the best qualities of the Virtual Vintage Solo and Solo Pro pickups: high output and a full, warm sound. Then it pushes these qualities even further. Treble response is smoother, the lows are tighter, and there is more pick attack. Play hard, and the sound jumps out of the amp. Play softer, and the sound becomes cleaner and quieter. And of course, there's no hum.
Recommended For: Bridge position.
Tech Talk: DiMarzio Virtual Vintage Solo and Solo Pro pickups both have specific qualities DiMarzio likes a lot, but they felt the sound could be even bigger. Making the highs both fatter and louder without any loss of definition on the lows creates a bridge pickup that can sound both warm and intense, and the Virtual Solo hum canceling pickup performs equally well with clean and heavily overdriven amps.

I've been trying out numerous Strat pickups over the years and never quite found one that I really liked for the bridge position until I stumbled upon the DP420. It is now at home in my Strat next to 2 Fender Vintage Noiseless models. The VN bridge pickup just doesn't cut it - too brittle and clangy, no character. Typically, I have not been fond of hum canceling Strat style pickups. Sure, the hum is gone, but so is the tone. The DP420 is all about tone and reminds me of the '59 Strat I owned many years ago. It has a tad more output than typical vintage-style Strat pickups but does not sacrifice the bell-like clarity that I thought was only available in traditional single coil designs. I'm sold - very nice pickup. For those with Fender American Standard Strats with Vintage Noiseless pickups, I recommend a 500K pot for the volume and 250K pots for the tone controls. It really smooths things out.
I have a Dimarzio Virtual Vintage Solo DP404 in the bridge position of my Strat and from what I understand the Virtual Solo DP420 is the upgraded version of that pickup with more output. I had the Dimarzio HS series on my Strat before and they sounded sterile. With the Virtual my Strat sounds warm, thicker and has a nice crunch wih distortion for a single coil. I combined it with two Fender Noiseless in the neck and middle and the combination is not bad sounding at all. The Virtual is definitely worth considering when modifying your Strat.
