DiMarzio DP417 Area T Tele Neck Pickup (300293)
Availability:

A vintage Tele cover with no sacrifice in sound quality or power.

DiMarzio believes the Area '58 and Area '61 are a major step forward in the performance of hum cancelling Strat replacement pickups. The technology that went into the DP417 models has allowed them to make a similar advance with Telecaster guitar pickups. The Area T neck model has the combination of clarity and warmth that Telecaster players have always sought.

The DP417 pickup is recommended for the neck.

Tech Talk: The contrast between a warm neck pickup tone and a biting bridge pickup sound is a Tele hallmark, but it's hard to achieve if the neck pickup is muddy. The Area T neck model has a very smooth tone, but its ability to remain clear even with heavy overdrive is an essential quality of Area design. The Area T pickup was designed to work with 250K controls, but treble response and output can be increased by using 500K volume and tone controls or tweaked further with a 250K volume and the EP1202 1 Megohm tone control.

  • Good tone, no noise

As reviewed by Charles Adams on 11/9/2012

I bought a pair of Area-T's for my MIM Tele. I like the tone and the fact that the guitar is now quiet! Highly recommended!

  • Brilliant tele tone, dead quiet!

As reviewed by Gerard Pasciak on 7/8/2011

This pickup provides a clear, punchy tone with lots of brilliance. The sound is a distinct improvement over the stock single-coil device, while maintaining the single-coil clarity. And all with no hum! Although DiMarzio's spec sheet indicates a 4-wire cable, the black and white wires are only an inch or so long and come soldered together in a series humbucker configuration. The instructions explain only that parallel wiring is not practical. Only humbucking and single-coil modes are possible, and in my experiments I find no discenable difference between the two sounds. Basically, this delivers only one sound, but a sound well worth the effort and expense. One note: If wired as recommended, this pickup will be out-of-phase with a Dimarzio Super Distortion pickup in the bridge position. It is curious that Dimarzio would design two Tele-only pickups to be out-of-phase with each other. However, simply swapping the red and green wires sets thing right.

  • Better than Lollars

As reviewed by Marr on 12/16/2008

These are by far the best hum-canceling pickups for the Tele. IF you absolutely MUST play without the hum (live performance, practice with headphones) then these are a no-brainer. However, I'd also put these up against many of the very best pickups for the Tele, hum or no hum. They have the warmth of the Lollar pickup with a truer Tele tone.
