Excellent vintage tone with today's tech benefits.

The DiMarzio DP223 PAF bridge position humbucker pickup uses new technology to duplicate the qualities of vintage electric guitar pickups--without sacrificing the presence and open sound of the best vintage humbuckers. This 36th anniversary PAF bridge pickup, a hotter version of the PAF, isn't just for set-neck 24-3/4" scale guitars, but is also an excellent bridge pickup for tremolo-equipped bolt-on neck guitars.

There was no such thing as a neck or bridge humbucker in the 1950s, but there was a wide range of performance between individual pickups that made some better suited to one position. Some of the old pickups had a lot of wire on the coils, which created more power and a warmer tone.

Want to go totally retro? The DiMarzio DP223 PAF Bridge pickup in standard spacing is also available with authentic vintage bobbins in glossy black, glossy double cream or glossy black and cream zebra; vintage "Patent Applied For" long-legged nickel-silver base, 1-conductor cable and your choice of polished and plated or vintage worn cover.

The 36th anniversary DiMarzio DP223 pickup is recommended for: Bridge position, can also be used in neck position with hotter bridge models.

Tech Talk: The DiMarzio PAF bridge pickup has the best qualities of the Virtual PAF bridge and Virtual Hot PAF pickups and then some. It's as loud as the VHPAF but has as much low-end and midrange definition as the VPAF bridge model. The highs are actually bigger and smoother than either model. The 4-conductor version also splits very well. Single-coil mode is bright, but not at all sterile-sounding.

  • Wow, Just wow!

As reviewed by Stephen Green on 11/1/2013

This is my first time ordering and installing a pickup. We bought Rocksmith with the guitar (for my son) and the Epi Les Paul Jr (very cheap guitar) sounded horrible and wouldn't stay in tune. I decided what better guitar to learn about modding on so I swapped out the tuners and the pickup and this pickup sounds amazing! Even in this little Epiphone Les Paul Jr, it sounds amazing. I am so glad I did this. The learning experience of swapping out components was a lot of fun. I now sit and swap out this little epi les paul jr for a stock epi les paul studio and struggle with which one I like better. I'd buy this pickup again and I'm debating buying another or pair to stick in my other guitar.

  • new life to a cheap guitar

As reviewed by Steve Judlick on 6/24/2013

I have always liked the Tele sound but never liked the neck. I recently found a cheap Ibanez Gio with a great neck and bought it with the intention of replacing the pickups. After some research I decided to go with this PAF and a Red Velvet single coil. I wired the PAF with a push /pull volume pot to let me split the coil. The results were amazing. I have a guitar that screams when I need it and also sounds amazingly similar to a Tele. It has become my go to guitar over my Gibson Les Paul. I am thinking about putting 2 of these in my daughter's SG with 2 push/pulls. Who knows, I may re-outfit my Les Paul as well.

  • Excellent upgrade!

As reviewed by Justin Blasy on 6/12/2012

I bought this pickup for my Epiphone SG. This was my first attempt at replacing pickups. I am blown away by the tone that I get from this pickup. I put it in the neck position, with a Super 3 in the bridge position. I added a push/pull pots for coil splitting, which I highly recommend. It has great vintage sounding tone as a single coil, as well as a humbucker.
