A versatile guitar part as specified by Satch.

Joe wanted a neck position humbucker that combined the best qualities of the DiMarzio PAF Pro with those of a late '50s Gibson humbucker. Joe described this tone as being "tubular". Through the use of Virtual Vintage technology, clear-sounding low frequencies are blended with warm-sounding mids and high frequencies, which makes the PAF Joe equally good for chords and single notes. It was first used by Joe throughout the 2003 G3 tour. Recommended for all positions, solid, semi-solid and hollowbody electric guitars.Tech Talk: What does "tubular" mean?In this case, it means making low notes "speak" more clearly while giving high notes a rounder voicing. This accomplishes 2 goals: chords have better definition, and single notes at higher fret positions remain warm sounding rather than getting thinner. The PAF Joe has slightly less power than the PAF Pro does. It balances well with bridge pickups like the PAF Pro, Fred, Breed neck model, Air Norton, and Norton.

  • PAF Joe pickup

As reviewed by DJH on 3/12/2007

I put this in my Ibanez JS100. At first I thougt it wasn't good at all, the harmonics sucked and the tone was just not that impressive. My oppinion changed when I bought an Electro-Harmonix Metal Muff Nano distortion pedal. This is when the pick up came to life. I guess it needs high gain distortion to make it sound good. And it does, now. I still prefer the sound of the PAF Pro to this one. To me it just has better tone and harmonics.

  • Great Neck Pickup!

As reviewed by Ken on 6/15/2007

I dropped this into a Les Paul Standard to replace a Burstbucker pickup. I thought the burstbucker in the neck to be "sterile" sounding with no personality so I called up DiMarzio and asked for a recommendation. They gave me the PAF Joe. After installing it, I sound checked the pickup on a dirty channel and immediately noticed that the sound was "tubey" and round. Much different than what I was used to hearing from my Burstbucker. The sound is smooth and full. A lot of personality in this thing. I also used it on a clean channel and noticed that it cleaned up nicely by itself. When run with the bridge humbucker the sound was still an improvement from I had before. I usually use my Les Paul for about 40% of a performance, but I found myself playing the guitar for the full night and was glad to hear that the sound was more versatile than it was before.

  • Great Neck Pickup

As reviewed by John Lumagui on 3/16/2010

I was having trouble finding pickups for my Jackson DK2M. It's a great guitar, but none of the pickups I tried worked very well-- until now. I think I've found the magic combo with a PAF Joe in the neck and an Evolution in the bridge. The PAF Joe is voiced for rock, and is clear as a bell. It eats gain for breakfast, and can sing and whisper as well. This one's a keeper-- highly recommended.
