      DiMarzio DP117 HS-3 Guitar Pickup (302200)
Availability:

Gutsy, warm, and full-bodied.

DiMarzio EQed the HS-3 guitar pickup with a broad low end while gently rolling back the top. The result is warmth without a glaring high end; just right for the guitar that needs more body and less screech. Hum-free pickup design lends itself to any performance situation. Try the HS-3 pickup in a recording environment--no more dumping your best solo because of single-coil noise on the track. Smooth tone curve produces a sweet overdrive without jagged edges. Coupled with the more glassy, transparent sound of HS-1 or HS-2 pickups in the neck and middle positions, the DiMarzio HS-3 pickup adds a warmer, fatter tone to round out your sound. Works well in all 3 positions on a Stratocaster for slightly warmer-than-usual Strat sound. Combines in middle and neck positions with bridge humbuckers like PAF Pro, PAF, Air Classic, or Norton. Standard 4-conductor wiring, Alnico 5 magnet, and 93mV output.

DiMarzio DP117 HS-3 Guitar Pickup Features:

  • Broad low end
    Restricted top
    More body and less screech
    Smooth tone curve
Works in all positions or with humbucker

  • DiMarzio HS-3 Pickup

As reviewed by Droco on 8/11/2008

I put this pickup in the neck position of my Fender Standard Strat, and this pickup has been performing at my expectations. This pickup really isn't noisy at all and produces a very warm tone. The best example of the sound I can give is pretty much any song from Yngwie Malmsteen's first solo cd, Rising Force. This pickup will not give you the bright classic sounds of bands like Led Zeppelin or The Who. It also is rather low gain and doesn't have the highest output, which is one of the main reasons I put it in the neck position, preferring a louder, higher output pickup in the neck and the bridge. If you're looking for a hum free pickup that accentuates your notes and gives them excellent clarity I would definitely recommend this pickup.

  • Best Strat Pickup I've Owned

As reviewed by Mike on 8/27/2011

I bought two of these and put one in the bridge position of each of my MIM Fender strats. Yngwie Malmsteen got it right when he said that in order to get great tone, you use a good clean, low-output pickup - then overdrive the crap out of it later in the signal chain. Not the other way around - if you start with a loud distorted pickup there is no way it will ever sound good. This pickup has a little more midrange than stock pickups, and the output is slightly lower, but it still retains that gnarly strat tone - without the annoying single coil hum. Great for stage or recording. One reviewer here gave it 1 star because he thought it would make his strat stop sounding like a strat, and of course it didn't (no.. REALLY??) That's good news for the rest of us who love that strat tone but want it slightly fatter with no hum. Your leads will sing like never before; however, these pickups are not very forgiving. All your mistakes will come out loud and clear. If your playing sucks, it's still going to suck but you'll suck with awesome tone. The only downside is that you lose a bit of that "quack" from the in-between positions. But you can only play "Sweet Home Alabama" so many times before you vomit, so it's no big deal. I highly recommend this pickup for the serious musician.

  • very stratty

As reviewed by (I'd rather not) on 7/8/2009

With the other reviews i have read i thought it would sound more like a Humbucker... not at all! sounds like the early '70s strats.. no increase in output... puts the Fender Vintage Noiseless (Toneless!!!) to shame with its hum-canceling feature and its accuracy in tone and volume roll off with a 250K pot.... best humbucking strat imitation i have ever tried so far!!!!
