  • Versatle High Output Pickup

As reviewed by Guitardudeguymanthing on 7/21/2010

Ok so i have had this pickup for about a year and i decided to put a comprehensive review up. I had this pickup in 2 guitars. One guitar with a basswood body and one with a mahogany body with a maple top. The amps i have played it through are a Bugera v55 (low gain), and a Mesa Boogie Nomad (high gain) For the basswood body there is a very definite midrange boost. So all your power cords just blast out, and a very decent treble to. However the bass is rather muted. So if you play stuff like Dio, or other 80's rock on a basswood body this will really help you stand out. But because of the restricted bass, drop tunings just aren't going to work with basswood. In the mahogany body, it had a quite different sound. Still midrangy, and bright, but not quite as much, and there was definitely alot more bass, enough to play in drop D atleast. Definitely capable of any amount of shredding but can get deep and low for some great riffing. Harmonics are pretty good, but just not the best. All in all this pickup really reflects the tone of the wood a bit more than its own tone. In both guitars there is a pretty massive output. Where a pickup like Seymour duncan JB, or Duncan designed HB-102b is clean, this pickup will be distorted to an almost bluesy state. And that along with a bit of crunch is where in my opinion i get the best tone out of it. So for those of you looking at this your probably considering either EMGs, Duncan Invader, Duncan Dimebucker, or some other high output pickup. What i can tell you is next to the EMGs this is the most versatile high output pickup on the market, and its also right now the cheapest. So if you need just a bit more gain in your mix, or are looking for something a little more powerful thats still got the classic Dimarzio tone you have found it here.

  • Ought to be standard for metal

As reviewed by Andrew on 8/22/2010

When I put the X2N in a mahogany body, I wasn't sure what to expect. I heard that a lot of people prefer the X2N for metal, but the DiMarzio pickup selector recommended the X2N as the third choice for high gain with my type of guitar. For me, it was my first choice. I wanted to replace the EMG 81/85 combo which sounded too confined, and definitely wanted to go passive because I didn't have an accessible battery box to begin with. It really is balanced; there's no significant treble bite like with the dimebucker, (which suited me for a Whitechapel-esque sound,) and I didn't find that treble, mids, or bass dominated the range of the sound. I can get a Death sort of tone, and also approximate Arch Enemy. It's also great on clean, and the coil split is okay if as long as the pickup isn't too far from the strings. If I could do it over again, I'd get the white one instead of the black, but would go with the X2N nonetheless.

  • Making a Rock Guitar.

As reviewed by DENNIS ROE on 10/22/2012

I bought a Jackson Rhoads V, used. And I wanted to replace the stock pups with something with more growl. In my search I came across the X2N. I bought it, and had it installed in thr bridge, whit a super2 in the neck (see other review). I was pleased beyound belief! I've run this through one of my amps. (Peavey KB/A 100, And on it's clean setting (which is pretty much all it has), the new tones I've been hearing were wonderful. It doesn't take much to overdrive it, and the growls and harmonics are great! And when pluged into one of my Marshalls (I have 3. Two small AVT 2,00. and a half stack, with a JCM dsl 2000), I can easly overcome a over enthusiastic drummer. Just start off with your gain low, and work your way up the dial, and your sure to find the sound you've been craving.
